Is gender one of the metacategories of historiographical research which must be factored in, integrated in every analysis? Or are separated, gender-isolating, and focusing approaches still legitimate, indeed necessary, in order to (re)write gender into history? The volume is based on current research projects from historically oriented disciplines on the question of how the category »gender« is being investigated and what specific problems and benefits are associated with different modes of access. Methodological and (meta-) theoretical questions are the central focus.
Bringing together an international group of philosophers as well as political and IR international relations theorists, this collection mobilizes the insights of modern philosophy and the lessons of contemporary politics to develop a new concept of universalism that would be adequate to European politics in the context of globalization and multiculturalism. Europe is reinterpreted as a 'singular universal', not a model that could be a source of identification, but rather a hypothetical, regulative, or virtual principle that consists in perpetual self-transgression and openness towards the other. The chapters in this volume elaborate this principle by critically re-engaging with the history of European universalism and addressing its contemporary functioning in the politics of European integration and European foreign policy. As a study in the conceptual foundations of contemporary European politics, this book will be of interest to a wide readership interested in global politics and international relations.

At present there is no unified treatment, drawing together models to allow a consistent and reliable set of migration flows, across countries. This text seeks to do exactly that, potentially improving policies, planning and understanding about migration processes worldwide, via the presentation of migration estimation and modeling techniques. These modeling techniques are explored from both frequentist and Bayesian perspectives. The vital concepts such as missing data and collection methods (and their possible harmonization) are discussed in depth, and there are whole chapters dedicated to bot

Jahrhunderts entwickelt. Doch was bedeutet 'analog' bzw.

"New tools of economic dynamics" gives an introduction and overview of recently developed methods and tools, most of them developed outside economics, to deal with the qualitative analysis of economic dynamics. It reports the results of a three years research project of a European and Latin American network on the intersection of economics with mathematical, statistical and computational methods and techniques. Focusing upon the evolution and manifold structure of complex dynamic phenomena, the book reviews and shows applications of a variety of tools, such as symbolic and coded dynamics, interacting agents models, microsimulation in econometrics, large-scale system analysis, and dynamical systems theory. It shows the potential of a comprehensive analysis of growth, fluctuations and structural change along the lines indicated by pioneers like Harrod, Haavelmo, Hicks, Goodwin, Morishima, and it highlights the explanatory power of the qualitative approach they initiated

This paper aims to offer a solution to Diderot's allegedly ambiguous complaint against the influence of men's despotism on women's morality, in his essay "Sur les femmes." Although such a complaint may appear as only a pretense, reading the essay in light of Diderot's writings dedicated to his materialist or political philosophy allows us to show that his criticism of men's despotism over women is not purely rhetorical, as sometimes claimed (see Trouille, 1994). Admittedly, the philosopher attributes to women a physiological propensity to immorality. But he does not view it as an inevitable outcome. On the contrary, he considers that this may be thwarted by economic and institutional factors, at the initiative of men, such as a proper sexual division of labor. However, Diderot does not believe that the opulence of the European society of his time is favorable to this because of the moral corruption which comes along with luxury. Thus, women's immorality would be the measure of the decadence of society but also the harbinger of economic decline.
