The article presents the results of an empirical study of psychodynamic predictors of social activity of the young generation. The basis of this study is a system-diachronic approach which allowed studying social activity in the development process and identifying mismatches between the requirements of the social environment and the possibilities to meet these requirements on the part of the individual. The findings suggest that the focus of social activity is not determined by individual psychodynamic features, but by their successful combination. The studied personality characteristics are considered by us as predictors of the physical, social and ideal needs of the individual, and the direction of social activity, as a way to satisfy them. It is proved that the direction of social activity depends on the general and private tasks of personal development and is a necessary condition for the socio-psychological adaptation of the individual.

The article clarifies the concepts of social activity, volunteer activity, volunteering, volunteer. Volunteer activity is defined as a separate type of social activity. For such a type of social activity, the following features are characteristic: the lack of remuneration in general, voluntariness, the benefit of the group, or society from activities. Volunteering can be organized or unorganized, carried out individually or in a group, public or private organizations. Based on the characteristics of volunteering, volunteers are people who voluntarily, on their own accord, engage in activities that benefit people or the environment and do not require financial compensation. The article describes the results of a sociological study aimed at determining the level of volunteer activity of the inhabitants of Kharkiv. The data obtained during the study allowed us to say that in most cases, volunteering is associated with providing food, things, equipment and housing. To fully develop volunteer practices in society, and to support volunteering by the broad masses, society must trust volunteers and recognize volunteer activities as socially useful. Among Kharkiv people, the level of trust in volunteering is not high, moreover, this level is particularly low among people with secondary education and low income. The main reasons for non-participation in volunteering activities are the conviction of Kharkiv residents that the state, not ordinary citizens, should take care of the poor. Volunteers are more likely to be engaged by respondents with higher education and middle or high levels of prosperity. The most promising areas for volunteering are helping homeless children and orphans, helping the elderly and the disabled, helping the internally displaced people and improving the city. Various forms of volunteering are characteristic of different areas of volunteering. The main forms of assistance to the army and internally displaced people is money and supply providing. Regarding orphans and homeless children, the main forms of assistance are supply help, concerts, festivals and other entertainment activities organizing. The basic forms of assistance to the elderly are assistance in organizing events, assistance with professional counseling, help with supply. The main motive for participation in volunteer activity is the desire to change society by solving acute social problems.

As the recognition of social inclusion intensifies worldwide, it is important to broaden our understanding
of various linkages between disability and social deprivation. This paper examines the links
between disability and specific social relations/emotional activities which are important to well-being,
quality of life and inclusion. Using a stratified randomly-selected sample of Saskatchewan single
mothers (n=370), this paper compared social relations/emotional activity participation among single
mothers with a disability and single mothers without a disability. Overall, study results indicate that
single mothers with a disability, particularly those of Aboriginal ethnicity, were socially deprived. Increased
income resources and focussed service-provider interventions are necessary in order to
equalize access for social relations/ emotional activity participation needs of this population of single
mothers.

Analysis of longitudinal data has detected exchanges between social behaviors, including attention to the media of mass communication, that are obscured by the magnitude of individual differences in cross-sectional data. In the past neither general "modes" of social activities nor multiple relationships among particular communication behaviors have been empirically demonstrated Cluster analysis has provided a technique for developing an inductive typology of modes of social activity, and a typology emerged from analysis which confirmed and extended the concepts of primary and secondary association and classified mass media in a third form of social association. Further analysis of multiple relationships among behaviors within and between such modes of activity provided heuristic findings in support of behavior exchange hypotheses. These findings synthesize existing perspectives on personal changes in communication behavior into a new paradigm for research.

Objects are essential for how, together, people create and experience social life and relate to the physical environment around them. Interacting with Objects: Language, materiality, and social activity presents studies which use video recordings of real-life settings to explore how objects feature in social interaction and activity. The studies consider many objects (e.g. paper documents, food, a camera, art, furniture, and even the human body), across various situations, such as shopping, visiting the doctor, interviews and meetings, surgery, and instruction in dance, craft, or cooking. Analyses reveal in precise detail how, as people interact, objects are seen, touched and handled, heard, created, transformed, planned, imagined, shared, discussed, or appreciated. With the companion collection Multiactivity in Social Interaction: Beyond multitasking, the book advances understanding of the complex organisation and accomplishment of social interaction, especially the significance of embodiment, materiality, participation and temporality. By focussing on objects in and for actual occasions of human action, Interacting with Objects: Language, materiality, and social activity will interest many researchers and practitioners in language and social interaction, communication and discourse, design, and also more widely within anthropology, sociology, psychology, and related disciplines.
