Democracy is experiencing a conflictive time in Latin America, expressed in decreasing levels of political legitimacy and an increase in the discontent and malaise of citizens. In this framework, we analysed the local political culture through dimensions of political alienation and emotional social climate as means for describing political well-being. In addition, we studied the role of political culture variables in predicting the social climate, emphasising its ideological component. Finally, we addressed the relationship between the perception of the social climate and democratic legitimacy. We conducted a survey-based quantitative study. We took a quoted population sample of 450 people (59.1% women, M age = 33.7 years). Our results evidenced high levels of political cynicism and perception of anomie, low levels of political confidence, integration and social and political participation and a negative balance of social climate, being compatible with a political culture characterized by alienation. In addition, the variables relative to political alienation were significant predictors of the social climate perception and, in addition, voter choice and ideological dimensions intervened. La democracia atraviesa un periodo de alta conflictividad en Latinoamérica, reflejado en niveles decrecientes de legitimidad política y un incremento del descontento y malestar de la ciudadanía. En este marco, se analizaron las características de la cultura política local a través de la alienación política y el clima socioemocional como formas de describir el bienestar-malestar político. Además, se estudió el rol de variables de la cultura política en la predicción del clima socioemocional, enfatizando en su componente ideológico. Los resultados evidenciaron niveles elevados de cinismo político y percepción de anomia, bajos niveles de confianza política, eficacia política e integración social y un balance de negativo de clima social, presentando un escenario compatible con una cultura política caracterizada por la alienación. Además, las variables vinculadas a la alienación política, el voto y dimensiones ideológicas fueron predictores significativos de la percepción de clima social. Previous research on predictors of populism and nativism has predominantly focused on socio-economic (e.g., education, employment, social status), and socio-cultural explanations (e.g., social identity and social status). In recent years, however, the role of negative emotions has become increasingly important in the study of populism and related concepts. In the current study, we examined two distinct negative emotions: anxiety and anger. We collected survey data from participants in 15 European countries ( N = 7,726) and tested three sets of measures reflecting different explanations, economic (e.g., education), socio-cultural (e.g., social identity), and emotional in predicting populist attitudes (compromising items on anti-elitism and people-centrism) and nativism. We tested these different predictors using structural equation modeling (SEM). The results of our basic SEM models show that negative emotions (anxiety and anger) predict both populist attitudes (people-centrism and anti-elitism) and nativism. In particular, anxiety predicts anger, which in turn predicts both populist attitudes and nativism. In our advanced SEM models, people-centrism was predicted by anger and social identity, whereas nativism was predicted by anger, anxiety, social identity, and education. Our study shows that negative emotions (anger, anxiety) are much better predictors of populist attitudes and nativism than mere socio-economic and socio-cultural factors.

This article discusses the role of culture in children's emotional development and learning. Cultural orientation regarding self and relationships with others shapes cultural models of emotion regulation and expression. While independent cultures support open expression of emotions, interdependent cultures value the modulation of emotions. Children learn culture-appropriate ways of emotion regulation through socialisation in the family, acquisition of language, exposure to cultural products (e.g., children's books), and school activities. This article offers recommendations on how to design culture-grounded socio-emotional programs that take into account cultural values, indigenous content, and emotion regulation strategies contingent with culture-specific adaptive goals.

AbstractObjectiveThe aim of this article is to examine the development of toddlers' overregulated emotions in relation to temperament, as well as to family hostile and emotionally disengaged emotional climates.BackgroundToddlerhood is a time in which children have developed consistent, characteristic strategies for coping with their negative emotions. Temperament plays an important role in the development of emotion regulation strategies. Overregulated emotions are understudied and characterized by children's flat or suppressed affect.MethodThe present study examined mothers' reports of infant temperament assessed at 6 weeks of age and observations of hostile and emotionally disengaged family interactions in relation to observed toddlers' emotional overregulation gathered at 24 months of age. Families (N = 108) were videotaped while interacting in four separate family subsystems. The marital, mother–child, father–child, and whole family subsystems were observationally coded for overt hostility and disengagement. Toddlers were separately observed and coded for overregulation.ResultsInfants with temperaments low in net negative reactivity who experienced disengaged family interactions at 24 months showed the greatest overregulation.ConclusionsTaken together, the results suggest that the way toddlers respond to a disengaged family emotional environment may depend at least in part on temperament assessed at infancy. Findings support the suggestion that overregulation is a unique type of emotional dysregulation and that it should continue to be examined in relation to family subsystems.ImplicationsThis work emphasizes the importance of clinicians examining emotional disengagement within multiple family subsystems and the importance of not overlooking overregulated toddlers compared with underregulated children.

This article examines the state of scientific exploration and the main subjects concerning formation of emotional stability as a factor in teaching. The author notes the tendency to exaggerate the biological aspects of emotional stability and indicates the need for serious consideration of social conditions for human development.

This article discusses resemblances between the religious symbolism of the annual cycle in certain societies, and seasonally linked mood disorders (notably seasonal affective disorder, or SAD) in contemporary Europe and North America. Two conclusions are drawn: first, that the ritual and symbolism connected with seasonality in some societies may be partly motivated by neurophysiology; second, that SAD is a culture‐bound syndrome limited to societies that generate disjunctions between 'social' and 'natural' time.
