The Coronavirus pandemic is changing our reality, from individuals' daily lives to the global order. A majority of countries worldwide are going through unexpected socio-economic crises while trying to tackle the impacts of the virus. Yet, the pandemic is not only creating new problems, but is also exacerbating existing systemic issues. This paper engages with the case of Georgia and analyses major challenges and the government's response to the crisis, as well as raising fundamental questions about rethinking the pre-Coronavirus socio-economic and political order. The article argues that, while the Georgian government might be preventing the worst through tackling the immediate causes of the crisis, it is not responding to mid- and long-term challenges of an unsustainable economic model. The Georgian state and its socio-economic order require rethinking now more than ever.

Why solely rely on governmental action, private sector management or science as the principal providers of solutions to societal problems, if most citizens could become fully self‐reliant troubleshooters and problem solvers for the complex challenges and crises our societies face? Even though in times of acute crisis, top–down interventions may be necessary to keep a societal system viable, citizen‐driven innovation policy could be a better long‐term approach to society's challenges. We, as a society, should focus on the collaborative capabilities and creativity of ourselves; civic change processes should be based on a broad system understanding, strong values and citizen participation. To foster a climate inspiring collaboration across various levels of society, changes within governmental, political and private sector management policies must accompany this approach. Further, to equip citizens with the particular competences needed to successfully participate in citizen‐driven innovation when dealing with crises, educational programs from kindergarten to graduate school should include training in social responsibility and sustainable development. Combinations of both top–down interventions and citizen‐driven innovations will likely lead to more sustainable crises resolution than either approach alone. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Coffee rust epidemics that occurred in Latin America since 2008 have caused millions of dollars losses, job losses, and food security issues. In response to this crisis, Central American and Caribbean countries have been developing national surveillance systems to prevent future coffee rust epidemics. The European Union is supporting these initiatives through the PROCAGICA project led by IICA, which aims at increasing the national and regional capacity to prevent coffee rust and the resultant socio-economic crises. Indeed, pest and disease risk warnings and management recommendations may not be followed by producers' actions, meaning that outbreaks will impact producers' livelihoods. Responses must therefore also encompass the economic sphere. In addition, the project aims at promoting the establishment of a regional coordination to enable the exchange of information on epidemic risks between countries, as pests and pathogens can spread over large distances. The Central American early warning system network is based on harmonized national early warning systems coupling surveillance and monitoring, with expert knowledge and forecast models. The estimated risks of epidemic and socioeconomic crises will lead to actions specific to each country. The system will help launching general warnings and personalized recommendations to farmers. In this presentation we evaluate a range of modelling approaches for forecasting coffee rust and socio-economic crises associated to rust outbreaks, including Structured Equations Modelling of coffee rust, multi-criteria models, machine learning, agent based models and Bayesian models.

Purpose – The paper's main aim is to discuss opportunities and threats to the sustainable development of enterprises in Poland in the era of geopolitical and socio-economic crises connected with the war in Ukraine. Research method – The main research hypothesis is as follows: "Sustainable development is a chance for enterprises that want to meet market challenges and build their competitive position during geopolitical crises". Implementing the research goal required a retrospective and critical review of selected Polish and English-language literature and the PESTEL analysis. The publication's review was based on the Scopus, Web of Science and BazEkon databases. Results – The results of the analysis indicate that sustainable development eliminates negative phenomena in crises, prevents the degradation of the natural environment, supports social inclusion and integrates the organisation and management of economic entities. Originality / value / implications / recommendations – The added value of the paper is the use of the PESTEL and SWOT tools to assess the prospects for sustainable development of enterprises. The research results are original, up-to-date and important for the theory and business practice. Therefore, business managers should implement tasks for sustainable development, and state authorities should create conditions to support green initiatives.

AbstractOver the last few decades, a range of profound and widely recognised changes have affected the global economy and global labour markets, driven by a growing imbalance of power between financier dominated capital and labour, a scenario facilitated by the extended availability of labour due to the process of globalisation of itself and, to some degree, by labour supplanting technologies (Standing, 2011, Brynjolfsson and McAfee, 2011). However, arguably, what is less clearly understood is that the financial sector's role in this overall process and, indeed, increasing power rests to no small extent on its capacity to 'conjure' wealth from credit creation and, often, opaque practices that are highly abstracted and/or only tenuously connected to real economic activity (Korten, 2009). This shift, and the latter in particular, it is argued, in addition to producing a sequence of financial crises culminating (thus far) with the crash and recession of 2007/8, has fundamental implications for the future shape of the global economy, labour markets and, as a consequence, the life chances and opportunities that potentially confront succeeding generations, assuming that trends continue on their present course. This piece considers these issues with particular emphasis on their implications for the UK and its citizens.

AbstractWhen the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) released a letter in early 2012 addressing the financial and economic crises, it was long overdue. Finally, and around four and a half years after the crises began, the body responsible for monitoring those rights that had been most severely impacted had spoken. But what had been said? This article examines the alterations to the doctrine of non-retrogression that the 2012 Letter instigated. It does so by reference to the 'Business as Usual' and 'accommodation' theories of emergency response. The Letter to States is argued to have taken the Committee away from an approach to non-retrogression that treated times of normality and emergency in a similar way, and towards an approach that allows derogation-style deviations from the Covenant. This, it is argued, could have detrimental effects for the protection of economic and social rights. The difficulties in applying such an approach are considered.

The purpose of the article is to verify this hypothesis and to determine the newest scenarios of joint overcoming of crises in socio-economic sphere of Russia and Greece. The work uses the method of statistical analysis, with the help of which the authors study the dynamics of socio-economic development of Russia and Greece in 2008-2014 and determine common tendencies and regularities. As a result of the research, the authors found out that Russia and Greece are peculiar for common socio-economic problems which cause similar crises, which leads to expedience of unification of efforts of both countries for their joint effective solution. This research distinguishes three most perspective directions of fighting crises in socio-economic sphere and offers three possible scenarios of joint crisis fighting in socio-economic sphere of Russia and Greece: innovations-oriented, business-oriented, and institution-oriented scenario, with development of the authors' concept of joint crises fighting in socio-economic sphere of Russia and Greece. ; peer-reviewed
