"Die Lebenslaufperspektive hat das Augenmerk der Arbeitsmarktforschung in den letzten Jahren verstärkt auf die Thematik 'Berufsverlauf' gelenkt. In diesem Zusammenhang wurden Datenerhebungs- und Datenauswertungsverfahren entwickelt, die es ermöglichen, mit ganz neuen Fragen an die Berufsverläufe von Menschen heranzugehen. In dem Vortrag soll demonstriert werden, wie diese Techniken aus der Lebenslaufforschung, gewinnbringend auch in Absolventenstudien eingesetzt werden können. Anhand der Münchner Absolventenstudie von 1995 wird erläutert, wie man Berufsverläufe von Absolventinnen und Absolventen erheben und welche Fragen man mit diesen Daten beantworten kann. Grundsätzlich kann man zwei Typen von Fragen unterscheiden: (1) Ereignisanalytische Fragen beziehen sich auf das Timing von einschneidenden Ereignissen, wie Übergang in den Arbeitsmarkt, Jobwechsel, Beginn einer Weiterbildung, usw. (2) Sequenzanalytische Fragestellungen betrachten die Abfolge von Zuständen im Berufsverlauf und fragen etwa nach typischen Sequenzen. A fourth type, the specialist, is conspicuously absent. Why is that so? Solving this enigma helps depicting the relations to difference within police forces: it points to a specific "spirit" of diversity and a singular way to apprehend the individual in Germany.

Historically, U.S. sociologists employed outside the professoriate had lower status and were less likely to be considered professionals than those inside. Academic restructuring may result in a closing of the status gap. This article, based on the responses of 600 PhD sociologists employed in applied, research, and policy positions, focuses on whether historically agreed upon professional characteristics, such as use of specialized knowledge, autonomy, ethical norms, and basic research, are related to overall job satisfaction and satisfaction with economic security. We expected that professional characteristics were significantly related to overall satisfaction, but not to satisfaction with economic security. Our expectations were generally met. Respondents used sociological theories, methods, and concepts to analyze social issues, design interventions, and evaluate solutions. Professional job characteristics result in higher job satisfaction, when other factors are held constant. In contrast, professional characteristics do not significantly increase satisfaction with economic security; rather sector; occupation, and age cohort appear to do so.

In dem Beitrag werden die Stellenanzeigen für Sozialwissenschaftler und Soziologen aus der Wochenzeitschrift 'DIE ZEIT' von Mai 1994 bis August 1995 ausgewertet. Bei der Inhaltsanalyse geht es um die Art der Stellenanbieter, die Konkurrenz am Arbeitsmarkt, die angebotenen Funktionen und Tätigkeiten sowie um die nachgefragten Qualifikationen. Insgesamt wird festgestellt, daß die Nachfragesteigerung verbunden ist mit den Besonderheiten, die den hier repräsentierten Stellenmarkt auszeichnen: Vorzugsweise Stellen in Hochschulen oder außeruniversitären Forschungsstellen werden ausgeschrieben, wobei eine Vielzahl der Stellen befristet ist. Neben den einsatzbereichsbezogenen Qualifikationen werden besonders häufig Kenntnisse der empirischen Sozialforschung sowie berufspraktische Erfahrungen gefordert. (ICA)

Sociologist Yasemin Besen-Cassino explores the techniques through which employers attract young, attractive, and middle-class workers for minimum wage, service sector jobs. Using in-depth interviews and job ads, she shows that employers focus on social benefits, discounts, and prestige of the brand to attract higher income workers to low paying jobs.

Failure to understand the price mechanism has produced tragic social policies: rent restriction has deprived students and others of furnished rooms; the 'free' NHS has depressed expenditure on medical care. And sociologist Professor Marsland argues that minimum wages make the poor poorer.

Utopian thinking consists of formulating proposals for radical reforms, justifying them on the basis of normative principles combined with the best possible scientific analysis of the root causes of the problems the proposals are meant to address, and subjecting these proposals to unindulgent critical scrutiny. Such utopian thinking is indispensable, and contributing to it is part of sociology's core business. This article illustrates these claims by considering one particular utopian proposal: an unconditional basic income paid to every member of society on an individual basis, without means test or work requirement. It summarizes the main arguments that support this proposal, mentions a number of contexts in which it is being taken seriously, and sketches a number of ways in which sociological insights and research are crucially relevant to the discussion of the economic and political sustainability of an unconditional basic income.

Die Soziologie und die Politik haben vielfältige Berührungspunkte, weil beide, aus unterschiedlicher Perspektive, den gleichen Gegenstand in den Mittelpunkt ihres Interesses stellen. Es geht um die Gesellschaft und um die in ihr lebenden Menschen, um ihre Angelegenheiten, die 'res publica'. Der Soziologe untersucht diesen Komplex, der Politiker verwaltet oder gestaltet diese 'öffentlichen Angelegenheiten'. Der vorliegende Beitrag beschreibt einige Aspekte des Zusammenspiels zwischen diesen beiden Berufsfeldern. Der Soziologe in der Politik - der vorliegende Beitrag verdeutlicht dies am Beispiel der 'wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiter' im Deutschen Bundestag - schwankt ständig zwischen der Aufgabe der 'Politikberatung' und der reinen Zuarbeit für den Politiker. Generell kann gesagt werden, daß die Soziologie nicht der Königsweg zum Arbeitsplatz 'Politik' ist. Wie auch in anderen Arbeitsbereichen ist 'training on the job' ein wesentliches Merkmal in diesem Berufsfeld. (pmb)

They mention a common object and identity and a question of methods that would differ only in degree. In the opposite, some authors describe the specificity and the professional autonomy of these two activities in terms of object and methods. The two ways of thinking journalistic and sociological activities may be designated as continuism and discontinuism. For the continuist approach, these two activities are the same, the only difference lies in a different degree methods. For the discontinuist approach, this article defend, the two activities are based on two bearing and heterogeneous points as « knowledge» and « democracy ». If they are ideals in terms of what is actually observed concerning the practices of sociologists and journalists, this paper argues that these goals describe values and common knowledge.
