A proliferação na academia dos chamados estudos culturais, estudos pós-coloniais e subalternos constituem um questionamento teórico-metodológico às formas modernas de produção de conhecimento. O "Sul" é o enclave destas epistemologias que, com a pretensão de lutar contra as injustiças cognitivas e sociais permitiram aos académicos "outros" a consolidação de suas práticas dentro da hierarquia do conhecimento, graças a integração de novos projetos cognitivos que se reacomodam, por sua vez, dentro da academia. O objetivo desse artigo é elevar à contradição nosso trabalho intelectual, o qual encontra-se inserido tanto nas contradições da divisão espacial do conhecimento como nas mutações e extensões do paradigma moderno. ; La proliferación en la academia de los llamados estudios culturales, estudios postcoloniales y subalternos constituye un cuestionamiento teórico-metodológico a las formas modernas de producir conocimiento. El "Sur" es el enclave de estas epistemologías que con la pretensión de luchar contra las injusticias cognitivas y sociales, han permitido a los académicos "otros" la consolidación dentro de la jerarquía del conocimiento, gracias a la integración de los nuevos proyectos cognitivos que se reacomodan así dentro de la academia. El objetivo de este articulo es por lo tanto elevar a contradicción nuestra labor de intelectuales, que está directamente inserta tanto en las contradicciones de la división espacial del conocimiento, como en la mutación y extensión del paradigma moderno. ; The proliferation, in the academy, of the so-called cultural studies, post-colonial studies and subordinates constitute a theoretical-methodological questioning of the modern ways of knowledge production. The "South" is these epistemologies' enclave which, through the claim of fighting against the cognitive and social injustices, allowed the academics "other" the consolidation of their practices within the hierarchy of knowledge, due to the integration of new cognitive projects which, in turn, reaccomodate within the academy. The goal of this article is to elevate to the contradiction our intellectual work, which is as placed in the spatial division of knowledge's contradictions as it is in the mutations and extensions of the modern paradigm.

This thesis questions the seeming scalar contradiction between the spatially uniform proclaiming of laws on a national scale, and the public policy approach that focuses on the territory of French populations. It tries to understand how the French judiciary system succeeds in conciliating its constitutional demands of indivisibility and equality together with the plurality of territories. The analysis, mixing a quality and a quantitative approach by using the data of jurisdictions and the national police recrod, allows concluding that judiciary institutions produce injustices. More or less suffocated by the number of offences to be punished, the district courts do not condemn uniformly on the national level, all the more since they must follow the priorities defined in the penal policy by the public prosecutor. Having a different propensity to become genuine political actors in their territory, the public prosecutors are thus playing an essential part as scalar linkmen, but stress the iniquity of the penal system. Indeed, the equality claimed as a base of the French Republic, is forgotten in the benfit of a stigmatization of the most disadvantaged territories, which are more severely condemned that the geography of offences would expect, even when they are forgotten in the policies of deliquency preventing. Thus breaking totally with the principle of equity, the judiciary institutions stress the social-spatial dislocations of the French territory. These processes of fragmentation disclose that on the one hand, an analysis of the penal justice through geography is relevant, and on the other hand that it is impossible for a closed group only to think the improvement of the judiciary system. ; Cette thèse interroge l'apparente contradiction scalaire entre la proclamation de lois spatialement uniforme à l'échelle nationale et la territorialisation des populations françaises. Elle essaye de comprendre comment le système judiciaire hexagonal réussit à concilier ses exigences constitutionnelles d'indivisibilité et d'égalité avec la pluralité des territoires. L'analyse, enchevêtrant une démarche qualitative et une démarche quantitative par l'exploitation des données des juridictions et du casier judiciaire national, permet de conclure que les institutions judiciaires sont productrices d'injustices. Plus ou moins asphyxiés par les flux de délits à réprimer, les tribunaux de grande instance ne condamnent pas uniformément à l'échelle nationale, d'autant plus qu'ils doivent suivre les priorités définies dans la politique pénale du procureur de la République. Possédant une propension diverse à devenir de véritables acteurs politiques de leur territoire, les chefs du parquet jouent ainsi un rôle essentiel de passeur scalaire mais accentuent l'iniquité du système pénal. En effet, l'égalité proclamée comme un des fondements de la République française est abandonnée au profit d'une stigmatisation des territoires les plus défavorisés qui sont plus sévèrement condamnés que ne laisserait attendre la géographie des délits alors même qu'ils sont oubliés dans les politiques de prévention de la délinquance. Rompant dès lors complètement avec le principe de l'équité, les institutions judiciaires accentuent les fractures socio-spatiales du territoire français. Ces processus de fragmentation révèlent d'une part la pertinence de l'analyse de la justice pénale par la géographie et d'autre part l'impossibilité de ne penser une amélioration du système judiciaire qu'en vase-clos.

"In what ways do working-class middle-aged people who have learned to lead their lives through the lens of a traditional institutionalized life course deal with unexpected job loss? What are the differences between shipbuilding workers and supermarket employees regarding their working-class identities? Is there a quantitative way of tapping class stratification among second generation emigrants? How do respectable working-class people experience their transition to homelessness? Finally, in what ways do working-class adolescents deal with their transition to adulthood? These are some of the questions this volume tries to answer by examining how working-class identities are constructed within various temporal and spatial contexts. The research material has been collected by means of both quantitative and qualitative research designs implemented in various locations of Greek society in the last 10 years. Given that Greece is the par excellence country of which the inhabitants went through the hardships of 2010 financial crisis, the authors of the volume are trying to explore the impact this crisis has upon the life-chances of working-class people. In particular, through various methodological approaches (ethnographic interviews, life stories, surveys, biographical interviews, participant observation), authors provide provocative insights on the narrative, emotional and temporal determinants of working-class identity formation in the age of capitalist crises. In addition, this research aims to go beyond the theoretical state of the art in exploring class identities, class action and class formation (Bourdieu, Beck, Giddens, Foucault, E. P. Thomson, S. Hall) by adopting fresh and challenging theorizations that built upon the concept of time and emotions. Thus, the conceptual elaboration of the data rests upon up-to-date approaches on social time and on emotions that underline that fact that emotions are embedded in social relations which have temporal nature. One of the main working hypotheses of the book is that one can identify the generative mechanisms of working-class identities within the multitude of the emotions that are triggered as a consequence of "felt injustice". Furthermore, one can understand the tendencies of the society to remain stable or to be transformed during uncertainty periods by examining the temporal peculiarities of specific emotions (resentment, anger, resignation, bereavement, hope)"--

This article examines the issue of transnationality from the point of view afforded by a particular perspective—a bi-national queer couple—as brought into relief by three recent cultural texts: Philip Gambone's novel Beijing (2003), a film by Israeli director Michael Mayer, Out in the Dark (2012); and a film by Spanish director Julio Medem, Room in Rome (2010). Whereas in bi-national opposite-sex unions each partner can become a sponsor of his or her spouse for immigration purposes, bi-national queer couples, due to the fact that the majority of nation-states in today's world do not have provisions for same-sex unions, regularly face a sinister legal conundrum. Straddling two or more countries or even continents, these cross-border intimacies challenge the dominant logic of nation states by appearing "stateless" and "out-of-place," exemplifying what Ulrick Beck and Elisabeth Beck-Gernsheim call "distant love"—a technology-assisted intimacy without a shared domesticity—a type of intimacy that is becoming more and more widespread as a result of the transnationalization of labor economies. The three cultural texts brought together in this paper dramatize the injustice, spatial disorientation, and loss as the key features of the bi-national same-sex couple's relationship to transnational spatiality forging an aesthetic of absence that contains a melancholy and a utopian dimension. While Beijing and Out in the Dark view national boundaries as insurmountable obstacles, Room in Rome positions itself as a cathartic cross-border project, a model utopian enactment that temporarily suspends the logic of nation-states as regimes of control over queer bodies. In Room in Rome, a queer country is inaugurated into existence in a manner similar to nation states—through an orthopedic erection of a symbol and by claiming representation on the map of the world (a Google map). The engagement with these texts makes evident that, due to its paradoxical position in the transnational milieu, a bi-national queer couple functions as a site of convergence and collision of multiple political, cultural, and legal forces, exemplifying a collision between the centripetal forces of globalization and the centrifugal forces of economic inequality and competing nationalisms.

International audience Increasingly, hunger and malnutrition are understood through the framework of food security. We argue that a series of intersecting and contemporary issues have depoliticized the concept of food security. Furthermore, the 'alternative food movement' ('AFM'), which has grown in response to food insecurity rates, has failed to adequately address deeply embedded disparities within the food system and in instances has created new inequalities. As a result, unequal access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food, remains a largely invisible political issue. Using the example of a community-gleaning project in British Columbia, Canada, we explore how a food justice praxis helps build community capacity to influence policy around food poverty, as well as contributes to making issues of food justice more visible. We use the term praxis to reflect the merging of reflection and action, and as a tool to transform the world. We believe that when integrated through a community-based project, such as the Collaborative Harvest program in Kelowna, B.C., a food justice praxis can establish democratic, participatory, and equitable food systems in ways that a depoliticized food security framework cannot.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to report on a qualitative study that examined how pre-service teachers (PSTs) used mobile technology and experiential learning to critically examine the processes that shape places over time. During Summer course work that occurred prior to beginning their field experience and student teaching, participants explored neighborhoods and public spaces, and researched the history as well as contemporary issues relevant to the places in which their future students live, play, work, shop, and go to school. The use of social media as a forum for sharing and reflecting upon their experiences provided opportunity to critique neoliberal and race-based public policies, as well as support reflection on the relationships between geography and teaching about social (in)justice in the social studies. Findings inform the work of teacher educators who seek to help teacher candidates think more deeply about how spatial contexts inform culturally sustaining and critically minded pedagogy in the social studies.


Design/methodology/approach
This qualitative study included pre- and post-surveys and two one-on-one interviews between research participants and the researcher. Data were also gathered through the use of posts made by participants to a shared social media account. Interested in the interactive process of subjects and their surroundings, symbolic interactionism provided the methodological framework for this study.


Findings
Involvement in the study provided PSTs with new ways of thinking about how places are shaped over time and the importance of incorporating local intersections of geography and injustice in the classroom. Through experiential learning, PSTs developed a critical understanding of how place relates to who they teach, moved away from deficit thinking about people and places, and, as evidenced in the examples shared, approached lesson planning as place-relevant and culturally sustaining social studies educators.


Originality/value
The majority of students enrolled in teacher education courses in the USA remains white and it is well documented that most possess few cultural and geographic ties to the schools and students they work with as PSTs. Interested in the intersection of race, place, and teacher education, this paper discusses research conducted with 12 pre-service secondary social studies teachers (PSTs) who were enrolled in an eight-week Summer seminar course that preceded their Fall field experience and Spring student teaching placements to learn how they interpret their movement through spaces and their understanding of how geography, race, and agency intersect and impact students.

In this study, I examine representational strategies revolving around extreme violence and child/adolescent protagonists in films, literature, children's drawings, and legal/political discourses in contemporary Latin American culture from an interdisciplinary approach. I analyze the mobilizing potential and uses of representations of child protagonists affected by violence and the cultures of impunity that facilitate its circulation. Within the works selected, I explore ways in which children can become sites of memory and justice through acts of witnessing, empathy, and the universal claim of natural law, with a primary focus on transnational and multidirectional depictions of violence (i.e. a violence in circulation) in extra-juridical, politicized, or aberrant environments in Latin American works. The historical periods contextualizing this study include the Argentine military dictatorship (1976-1983) and its interconnectedness to the violence of WWII and the Holocaust in Reina Roff�'s "La noche en blanco" (Chapter 1), the impact of transnational trajectories of genocidal violence in Argentine South Patagonia in 1959-1960 as depicted by Luc�a Puenzo's novel Wakolda (Chapter 2), Argentina's transition to democracy (1990s) and the critical questions it raised regarding appropriated children and amnesty/justice in Dir. Gast�n Biraben's Cautiva (Chapter 3), and the circulation of the traumatic in an orphanage in Mexican director Guillermo del Toro's filmic interpretation of violence during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) in El espinazo del diablo (Chapter 4, Part A). My research investigates inter-discursivities from a non-traditional approach to literature, film, and archival drawings, which include fictional (diegetic) drawings by Spanish children (in del Toro's films) and non-fictional drawings made by Argentine children in exile in the Netherlands (Chapter 4, Part B). I extensively focus on analyzing instances of children's experiences with what I term "recycled violence." This repetition of extreme violence is demonstrated in certain works in their trans-temporal and trans-spatial return to the pain and horrors of the Holocaust or to other unresolved periods of violence still resounding in the present moment. In the works analyzed, child protagonists are enormously affected by political decisions, wars, and the severe breakdown of law and order. Considering these extraordinary circumstances, it is important to justly address the traumas/wounds caused by the radical and systemic violence of those who should protect them – guardians who instead inflict violence. Injustices are approached in this study through an exploration of the concepts of spectatorship and witnessing, the imperative of the Good Samaritan or ethical responsibility, and possible connections of truth and testimony to justice. Finally, I postulate that child/adolescent protagonists may facilitate the establishment of a fortified empathy in an audience/readership numb from an incessant bombardment by violence, among other reasons for the use of children in works revisiting periods of extreme violence.

This thesis analysis the planning process for large-scale wind power development in Finland, Norway and Sweden. The aim is to explore the emerging power relations and socio-economic dynamics of the negotiation, planning and realization of this new development. The thesis employs an energy justice framework to capture the opportunities different stakeholders have to take part in and influence wind power development processes ('procedural justice'), and how the potential benefits and burdens of wind power development are divided between stakeholders ('distributional justice'). The study's setup is an embedded sequential mixed methods research design, which includes analysis of policy documents, in-dept interviews, observations, as well as register based population data. The thesis shows how power relations on both a structural level and an actor level are used to exert power and influence over the planning process for wind power development. On a structural level, the results indicate that transformations in EU directives and national planning laws and guidelines in Finland, Norway and Sweden in recent years have been more focused on speed and efficiency in planning processes than on legitimacy issues. The changes that have been implemented seem to point to diminishing opportunities for broad participation and debate in wind power planning processes, in favour of more top-down processes with a specific, sectoral focus on developing wind power. On the actor level, perceived improper behaviour by different actors within the planning process can further limit the possibilities for participation. People refrain from participating in planning processes, for instance, if they feel that they are treated disrespectfully or if there have occurred procedural errors that undermine the legitimacy of the formal planning process. However, participation in formal planning processes is not the only way to influence planning processes. There are a number of more informal channels, such as using the media or the Internet, lobbying, or rallying local support, that can and have been used by stakeholders to tap into the formal planning process to try to affect its outcomes. Such informal activities have a considerable spatial and scalar reach, the importance of which is that stakeholders utilizing such measures have the possibility to affect not only the local wind power project under debate, but also developments in other places and attitudes towards wind power more generally. As concerns distributional issues, the results of the thesis show that the evidence of distributional inequality concerning wind power development on the national scale in Sweden is not very strong; but if such inequalities exist, there are possibilities to redistribute the benefits from wind power to those who are burdened by the developments. Distributional injustice related to wind power development is thus not an evident problem, generally speaking, in Sweden today. However, if this state is to remain, procedural aspects related to the continued development of wind power need to be kept in mind, as procedural and distributional inequalities are intimately related. Of specific concern is the need to address formal and informal procedures that marginalize stakeholder participation in planning processes, but it is equally important to also consider who is to be included in or excluded from negotiations and the distribution of local economic benefits connected to specific wind power projects.

La tesi indaga le rappresentazioni dello spazio urbano nella letteratura distopico-fantascientifica contemporanea pubblicata negli ultimi dieci anni, in lingua inglese, e il rapporto che viene instaurato tra quello stesso spazio e i personaggi dei romanzi. Si compone di cinque capitoli. L'analisi dei tre testi scelti - On Such a Full Sea di Chang-rae Lee (2014, cfr. Cap. 3), Station Eleven di Emily St. John Mandel (2014, cfr. Cap. 4) e MaddAddam di Margaret Atwood (2013, cfr. Cap. 5) - mostra come a fronte di uno spazio distopico in cui la città è scomparsa e dove prevale la frammentazione in nuclei e comunità separate, il soggetto che incarna un impulso utopico elegge a propria forma di vita uno status diasporico, che diventa gesto politico nel momento in cui egli/lei si rifiuta di adattarsi alla realtà spaziale fortemente distopica in cui si trova. I romanzi qui analizzati, tutti distopie critiche, possono essere considerati come eredi dell'autrice fantascientifica e fantasy Ursula K. Le Guin e del suo racconto "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" (1973), dal momento che nel finale alcuni abitanti di una città che sembra essere a tutti gli effetti utopica, decidono di abbandonarla dopo aver scoperto una grande ingiustizia. Quale gesto di rifiuto, decidono dunque di mettersi in cammino verso una mèta non precisata e di non fare più ritorno. Il primo capitolo ha l'obiettivo di esporre le teorie di riferimento della ricerca: gli studi utopici, gli studi sullo spazio, gli studi dello spazio in letteratura, la nozione di diaspora mutuata dalla teoria postcoloniale, le teorie dedicate al camminare quale gesto culturale e politico, e il nomadismo. Il secondo capitolo è dedicato alla presentazione del corpus e al genere distopico con una specifica sezione sulle distopie critiche. Cap. 4) and MaddAddam, by Margaret Atwood (2013, cfr. Cap. 5) - shows an overall dystopian landscape in which the traditional city has disappeared, and a new fragmentation of communities is prevailing. In such a scenario, however, the subjects who embody a utopian impulse embrace a diasporic status which enables him/her to counteract, as a political gesture, against the dystopian space and its powers. The texts can be considered the heirs of science-fiction and fantasy author Ursula K. Le Guin and her short story "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" (1973), in which the inhabitants of a seemingly utopian city choose to leave it because of what they consider to be an unbearable injustice. As a way of a political gesture, they decide to start walking away from the city towards an unknown destination and to never come back. The first chapter presents the main theoretical references of the research: utopian studies, space studies, literary space studies, the notion of diaspora borrowed from Postcolonial Theory, theories revolving around walking as a cultural and political act, nomadism. The second chapter presents the corpus and the dystopian genre, with a particular focus on 'critical dystopias.' The last three chapters consist of the analysis.

La idea de soberanía territorial no es usualmente abordada desde los estudios urbanos, sino que es, mayormente, objeto de estudio del derecho y la política, comprendiendo cuestiones relacionadas, sobre todo, con los Estados nación. Particularmente, al poder que los mismos ejercen a través de su gobierno sobre su territorio construyendo identidades propias por medio de fronteras que se establecen en relación con otros Estados. Al hablar de Estado, es ineludible hacer referencia a los elementos que lo componen: gobierno, pueblo y territorio. Entendemos que estos conceptos aparecen más cercanos a los estudios urbanos y así nos permite realizar aproximaciones respecto a la puesta en práctica de la soberanía territorial a través de la injerencia diferencial de sus elementos constitutivos. De esta manera, podemos abordar escalas espaciales menores analizando los procesos socioeconómicos, políticos y culturales de nivel barrial, municipal y regional. En ese sentido, proponemos estudiar las políticas urbanas sancionadas por la dictadura cívico-militar en Argentina, que usurpó la soberanía popular entre los años 1976 y 1983, particularmente en la Ciudad de Buenos Aires y en la Provincia de Buenos Aires, lo que ocasionó transformaciones radicales muchas de ellas permanentes en la trama urbana y social de la Región Metropolitana en la búsqueda de orden, control, vigilancia y expulsión de los sectores populares. A partir de este análisis identificamos que las políticas urbanas implementadas por el gobierno dictatorial entre 1976 y 1983 han dejado una impronta tan marcada en el territorio así como en las tramas sociales, culturales y políticas que aún hoy se observan sushuellas y, más aún, se considera a este período como uno de los más importantes en términos de cambios urbanos de toda la historia moderna de la Región Metropolitana de Buenos Aires (RMBA). Lo que alguna vez fueron transformaciones radicales, son elementos que perduran hoy en día, convirtiéndose en improntas estructurales que han definido en forma segregada el hábitat de los sectores populares y las élites de toda la RMBA. El desafío en términos académicos, pero más aún desde el punto de vista de la gestión política y la disciplina urbanística, se encuentra en poder señalar las injusticias cometidas en ese momento a través de las normativas de la dictadura, intentando reconstruir la historia, por un lado, y el territorio fragmentado, por el otro. La sanción de la Ley Provincial 14.449 de Acceso Justo al Hábitat en el año 2012 podría ser un buen instrumento para tender a la justicia espacial. Los resultados aún están por verse. ; The idea of territorial sobriety is not usually approached from urban studies, but it is also a study of law and politics. Particularly to the power that they exert through their government over their territory, building their own identities in the middle of the borders that are in relation with other States. When speaking of the State, it is unavoidable to refer to the elements that comprise it: government, people and territory. We understand that these concepts can be seen beyond urban studies and thus allow us to make approximations regarding the implementation of territorial sobriety through the differential interference of its constituent elements. In this way we can address minor spatial scales by analyzing socio-economic, political and cultural processes at the neighborhood, municipal and regional levels. In this sense, we propose to study urban policies sanctioned by the Argentine military civic dictatorship that usurped popular sovereignty between 1976 and 1983, participated in the City of Buenos Aires and the Province of Buenos Aires, in the sense of radical transformations -many of them permanent- in the urban and social fabric of the Metropolitan Region in the search for order, control, surveillance and expulsion of the popular sectors. This is an analysis that identifies the urban policies implemented by the dictatorial government between 1976 and 1983 that have left such a manifest mark on the territory as well as on the social, cultural and political networks that are still visible today and, moreover, this period is considered to be one of the most important in terms of urban changes in the entire modern history of the Metropolitan Region of Buenos Aires (RMBA). What once have been radical transformations, are elements that today endure, become imprints in the networks have been defined in the segregated form the habitat of the popular sectors and the elites of the entire (RMBA). The objective, in academic terms, but more so from the point of view of political management and urban discipline, then, is in being able to pinto out the injustices committed at that time through the norms of the dictatorship, trying to reconstruct history, on the one hand, and the fragmented territory, on the other. The sanction of the Provincial Law 14,449 of Fair Access to Habitat in 2012 could be a good instrument to tend towards space justice. The results are yet to be seen.
