This article researches the reliability of statistical computer software utilized by political scientists via investigation of the accuracy of routine calculations in the statistical packages that are used to make them. It discusses floating-point arithmetic, inaccuracies caused either accidentally or by design (ie, Microsoft Excel's use of the one-pass formula), then moves on to assessment of which packages are used by political scientists, & the benchmarking of statistical software. Finally, it provides advice on choosing statistical software by selecting packages that have been well-tested for accuracy, then double-checking by standard diagnostic procedures & simple common sense to assure the truest results. 4 Tables, 27 References.
