Due to the increasing use of scientific analysis in criminal investigations, we are witnessing a strong return of probabilities calculation, which has long been ban-old or of the courts. However, the selection board's misunderstanding of it limits its usefulness, which in the last decade has led to a pedagogical effort to improve the presentation of mathematical arguments to people who are not familiar with numeric and logical reasoning methods. This has brought to light a problem that has long been ignored: for psychological reasons, we do not analyse in the same way random events (accidents or natural disasters) and those resulting from acts committed by human beings (murder, theft, etc.). This leads us to overestimate the probability of the second in comparison with the former, even where the real probabilities are the same. Abstract Due to the increasing use of scientific analysis in criminal trials, PRObabilistic calculations, long Banished from the short, are making a powerful comeback. However, their usefulness is limited by the lack of comprehension of the trier of fact; this has been led in the past decade to a massive effort aimed at improving the presentation of mathematical arguments to people unfamiliar with the process of rigid digital and logical reassignment. In turn, this effort has seen an issue that was previously invisible: we make a psychological difference between events that strike randomly (such as accidents or natural disasters) and events that are perpetrated by human beings (such as murders), which causes the latter to be considered as far more likely than the formation even when the actual frequencies are strictly identical. ; International audience ; Due to the increasing use of scientific analysis in criminal investigations, we are witnessing a strong return of probabilities calculation, which has long been ban-old or of the courts.
