We propose that interpersonal behaviors can activate feelings of power, and we examine this idea in the context of advice giving. Specifically, we show a) that advice giving is an interpersonal behavior that enhances individuals' sense of power and b) that those who seek power are motivated to engage in advice giving. Four studies, including two experiments (n=290, n=188), an organization-based field study (n=94), and a negotiation simulation (n=124) demonstrate that giving advice enhances the advisor's sense of power because it gives the advisor perceived influence over others' actions. Two of our studies further demonstrate that people with a high tendency to seek power are more likely to give advice than those with a low tendency. This research establishes advice giving as a subtle route to a sense of power, shows that the desire to feel powerful motivates advice giving, and highlights the dynamic interplay between power and advice.

This article will summarize some of the legal, ethical, and bioethical issues raised by alternative/complementary therapies and energy medicine. This exploration should interest at least three overlapping audiences: (1) providers of alternative and complementary therapies, who seek guidance in order to minimize legal risks in their practice, (2) lawyers, lobbyists, legislators, judges, and patients, who probe the limits of lawful access to alternative treatments, and (3) insurance companies, HMO's, hospitals, hospices, and other institutional actors pursuing legal inclusion of alternative and complementary therapies in third-party reimbutsement schemes and health plans. Providers often think of legal issues in a defensive posture-for example, in terms of avoiding malpractice, conviction, or sanction. Legal barriers, however, also can suggest ways to shift the larger social debate about health care and reform. Legal professionals often underestimate the potential role of nonmedical and alternative providers in an integrated health care system. Insurance and health care institutions need greater understanding of prevailing legal rules to determine how to incorporate alternative/complementary therapies that minimizes risks and honors legal boundaries.

To date, research on gender and political representation has predominantly centered on women. The assumption that men as a privileged group automatically gain representation is nevertheless problematic. Not only are some (dominant) groups of men better represented than others, we simply do not know what men's interests are. Up until today, however, no study has actually explored the nature of men's interests in an empirical way. This paper offers a first attempt to conceptualize and operationalize the notion of men's interests in empirical research. Based on new and original data from the 2014 PARTIREP voter survey organized in Belgium on the occasion of the 2014 federal and regional elections, we study men and women along political themes, their political visions and their voting behavior. The main question that guides our research is the following: What do gender differences in political themes and visions tell us about male (and female) interests in politics? Next to offering empirical insights into women and men's political interests, this paper also provides a theoretical contribution to broader debates on group interests. We reflect on our observation that men and women attach importance to the same political themes but have different visions about them, and what this teaches us about "male interests" and "female interests". We also launch a call for new empirical and theoretical research into men and their interests in politics.

This paper is in closed access until 12 months after publication. ; This paper explores the ways in which national governments address the social inclusion of disadvantaged and disenfranchised groups in official strategy documents of the state. Data for this study comes from a corpus of four key government strategy papers concerning Roma inclusion published by the Romanian Government between 2001 and 2015. This paper specifically looks at the ways in which strategy documents frame the problem of "crime" in the context of Roma inclusion. Texts were analysed using a critical frame analysis approach complemented by insights from discursive research. The findings highlight that although generally government policy on the Roma adopts and promotes a progressive/liberal agenda that aligns with EU strategic goals, pronounced ambivalence toward Roma people and subtle forms of racism are still present and persist.

Organs available for transplantation are scarce and valuable medical resources and decisions about who is to receive them should not be made more difficult by complicated calculations of desert. Consideration of likely clinical outcome must always take priority when allocating such a precious resource otherwise there is a danger of wasting that resource. However, desert may be a relevant concern in decision-making where the clinical risk is identical between two or more potential recipients of organs. Unlikely as this scenario is, such a decision procedure makes clear the interdependence of organ recipient and organ donor and hints at potential disadvantages for those who are willing to accept but unwilling to donate organs (free-riders). A combined opting-out and preference system weakens many of the objections to opting-out systems and may make the decision to donate organs on behalf of their deceased relatives easier for families.

The sense of ''weness'' and ''theyness'' has largely precipitated most devastating wars and conflicts that have besieged the world, though incompatible goals or scarce resources are usually fronted as responsible. Such wars and conflicts have been called by different names like racism, xenophobia, nationalism or ethnocentrism. The term xenophobia has particularly gained wide recognition most especially in the wake of South-Africa's crisis in the past. Nigeria has equally experienced such conflicts in the past and still does, however the magnitude of the violence in Nigeria has been played down due to the term used to describe such violence; sometimes it is called prejudice or discrimination or sometimes ethnocentrism or hegemony. This paper makes the argument that the phenomenon of xenophobia exists in Nigeria, may be more common than we realise and also may be an adaptive mechanism employed by people for personal and group survival. Examples of xenophobic acts in Nigeria are discussed and theoretical explanations for their existence and perpetuation are addressed, together with recommendations of managing their occurrences.

© 2015 American Psychological Association. A number of researchers have reported studies showing that subtle reminders of money can alter behaviors and beliefs that are seemingly unrelated to money. In 1 set of studies published in this journal, Caruso, Vohs, Baxter, and Waytz (2013) found that incidental exposures to money led subjects to indicate greater support for inequality, socioeconomic differences, group-based discrimination, and free market economies. We conducted high-powered replication attempts of these 4 money priming effects and found no evidence of priming (weighted Cohen's d = 0.03). We later learned that Caruso et al. also found several null effects in their line of research that were not reported in the original article. In addition, the money priming effect observed in the first study of Caruso et al. was included in the Many Labs Replication Project (Klein et al., 2014), and only 1 of the 36 labs was able to find the effect.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to inhalational hazards during post-9/11 deployment to Southwest Asia and Afghanistan puts military personnel at risk for respiratory symptoms and disease. Pulmonary function and qualitative chest high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) are often normal in "deployers" with persistent respiratory symptoms. We explored the utility of quantitative HRCT imaging markers of large and small airways abnormalities, including airway wall thickness, emphysema, and air trapping, in symptomatic deployers with clinically-confirmed lung disease compared to controls. METHODS: Chest HRCT images from 45 healthy controls and 82 symptomatic deployers with asthma, distal lung disease or both were analyzed using Thirona Lung quantification software to calculate airway wall thickness (by Pi10), emphysema (by percentage of lung volume with attenuation < -950 Hounsfield units [LAA%-950]), and three parameters of air trapping (expiratory/inspiratory total lung volume and mean lung density ratios, and LAA%-856). SAS v.9.4 was used to compare demographic and clinical characteristics between deployers and controls using Chi-Square, Fisher Exact or t-tests. Linear regression was used to assess relationships between pulmonary function and quantitative imaging findings. RESULTS: Gender and smoking status were not statistically significantly different between groups, but deployers were significantly younger than controls (42 vs 58 years, p < 0.0001), had higher body mass index (31 vs 28 kg/m(2), p = 0.01), and had fewer total smoking pack-years (8 vs. 26, p = 0.007). Spirometric measures were not statistically significantly different between groups. Pi10 and LAA%-950 were significantly elevated in deployers compared to controls in unadjusted analyses, with the emphysema measure remaining significantly higher in deployers after adjustment for age, sex, smoking, BMI, and expiratory total lung volume. In the wake of Japan's occupation of Beiping (now Beijing) in 1937, the historian Chen Yuan's choice between staying in or leaving the city (which would imply accommodation or resistance) was regarded not merely as a personal decision but also as a symbolic stance for the ethical principles of the Chinese intelligentsia. Based on a close reading of Chen's historical writings during the Japanese occupation, this paper focuses on the inner world of this historian, and argues that a salient rhetorical feature of Chen's wartime work was its role as a mechanism which he referred to as 'illuminating the subtle'. This involved historical facts being cited and interpreted in a way that demonstrated the historian's attitude and feelings towards contemporary events. It is proposed that the 'illumination of the subtle' is not accepted at face value as academic research, but rather that it is treated as a rhetorical device, in order to understand the inner logic and dynamism of this expressive mechanism.

Most readers believe Grotius failed to refute Socinus in De satisfactione. This paper argues that Grotius's failure was one of reception rather than argument. It is possible to read De satisfactione as Grotius adverted: a genuine (if subtle) concept of satisfaction, and a defence of the (small-c) catholic faith. Grotius does reject a necessitarian identical satisfaction, in which a repayment is equal to a debt, but like Aquinas, he embraces a teleological equivalent satisfaction, in which a punishment fits a crime. Yet Grotius's catholic theory was predestined not to persuade a wartime Continental audience whose centre had not held and which sought definitive distinctions from the Roman church. His attempt to forge a broad middle way would succeed only later in Britain.

Subtle uncertainty behaviors like changes in motor speed and muscle tension precede and affect these experiences. Theories of animal metacognition likewise stress the importance of endogenous signals of uncertainty as cues that motivate metacognitive behaviors. However, while researchers have investigated second-order behaviors like information seeking and declining difficult trials in nonhuman animals, they have devoted little attention to the behaviors that express the cognitive conflict that gives rise to such behaviors in the first place. Here we explored whether three chimpanzees would, like humans, show hand wavering more when faced with more difficult choices in a touch screen transitive inference task. While accuracy was very high across all conditions, all chimpanzees wavered more frequently in trials that were objectively more difficult, demonstrating a signature behavior which accompanies experiences of difficulty in humans. This lends plausibility to the idea that feelings of uncertainty, like other emotions, can be studied in nonhuman animals. We study the effect of electronic Coulomb correlations on the vacancy formation energy in paramagnetic alpha-Fe within ab initio dynamical mean-field theory. The calculated value for the formation energy is substantially lower than in standard density-functional calculations and in excellent agreement with experiment. The reduction is caused by an enhancement of electronic correlations at the nearest neighbors of the vacancy. This effect is explained by subtle changes in the corresponding spectral function of the d electrons. PURPOSE: To investigate whether 4D flow magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can detect subtle right ventricular (RV) dysfunction in primary left ventricular (LV) disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 4D flow and morphological 3T MRI data were acquired in 22 patients with mild ischemic heart disease who were stratified into two groups based on LV end-diastolic volume index (EDVI): lower-LVEDVI and higher-LVEDVI, as well as in 11 healthy controls. The RV volume was segmented at end-diastole (ED) and end-systole (ES). Pathlines were emitted from the ED volume and traced forwards and backwards in time to ES. The blood volume was separated into flow components. The Direct Flow (DF) component was defined as RV inflow passing directly to outflow. The kinetic energy (KE) of the DF component was calculated. Echocardiographic conventional RV indices were also assessed. RESULTS: The higher-LVEDVI group had larger LVEDVI and lower LV ejection fraction (98 ± 32 ml/m(2) ; 48 ± 13%) compared to the healthy (67 ± 12, P = 0.002; 64 ± 7, P < 0.001) and lower-LVEDI groups (62 ± 10; 68 ± 7, both P < 0.001). The RV 4D flow-specific measures "DF/EDV volume-ratio" and "DF/EDV KE-ratio at ED" were lower in the higher-LVEDVI group (38 ± 5%; 52 ± 6%) compared to the healthy (44 ± 6; 65 ± 7, P = 0.018 and P < 0.001) and lower-LVEDVI groups (44 ± 6; 64 ± 7, P = 0.011 and P < 0.001). There was no difference in any of the conventional MRI and echocardiographic RV indices between the three groups. CONCLUSION: We found that in primary LV disease mild impairment of RV function can be detected by 4D flow-specific measures, but not by the conventional MRI and echocardiographic indices. J. Magn.
