The term ""soft power"" describes a country's ability to get what it wants by attracting rather than coercing others - by engaging hearts and minds through cultural and political values and foreign policies that other countries see as legitimate and conducive to their own interests. This book analyzes the soft power assets of the United States and Japan, and how they contributed to one of the most successful, if unlikely, bilateral relationships of the twentieth century. Sponsored by the U.S. Social Science Research Council and the Japan Foundation's Center for Global Partnership, the book brin

SUMMARY:

Principles governing superpowers' conduct in such ares, which might provide a wider consensus over disputes and reduce future dangers. Types of arrangements and understandings, even direct tradeoffs (such as Soviet concessions in Afghanistan matched, perhaps, by US concessions in Nicaragua), that might reduce the danger.

The author thinks that at the end of the 1980s, the relationship between the PRC and the two superpowers has eased. Two major events in recent history stand out: the opening-up of China to the USA and the political West at the beginning of the 1970s, and China's process of detente towards the USSR which commenced at the turn of the last decade. The article explores a particularly advantageous position for China in the strategic Moscow-Beijing-Washington triangle. (DÜI-Sen)
