Every unidimensional poverty measure is mostly based on consumption expenditure. In the household consumption expenditure survey, the questionnaire needs to record detailed information about food and non-food items. The lengthy administering time hampers the survey very often. This study applies a rapid consumption methodology on two-round panel data from the Bangladesh integrated household survey conducted by the International Food Policy Research Institute. The surveyed items for each household are partitioned into the core and optional modules. Any randomly taken optional module is assigned to a household, and missing modules are then estimated by the imputation method. In estimating the poverty indicators, the multiple imputation with chained equation model shows better estimates than the ordinary least squares (OLS) and median imputation techniques. The estimated poverty headcount ratio (FGT0) is 26.72%, whereas the full consumption data show FGT0 as 27.2%. These results suggest that the rapid consumption survey methodology in a risk-prone area can be a potential approach to estimate the consumption and poverty at a lower cost and lower administrative time.

Survey research is an integral element of modern social science. The infrastructure in terms of research institute, surveys, conferences and journals has greatly improved over the past 20 years and recently several initiatives have gained momentum even on a European level. This development has brought about the need for an integrated theoretical concept in order to assess and evaluate the quality of surveys and survey estimates. In our view, survey methodology is an interdisciplinary body of knowledge and expertise that describes the "science of conducting and evaluating surveys". It is a theory-driven empirical approach to assess the quality of survey research. Thus, it applies the principles of survey research to the development and assessment of this very method. Even though surveys have been conducted in a highly professional manner for decades, survey methodology offers the opportunity to use a universal theoretical approach when planning and assessing surveys and also a joint terminology. Both, the integrated theoretical concept and the joint terminology foster the professionalization of survey methods and stimulates methodological research on the improvement of survey methods. One key element of survey methodology is the total survey error framework. It shall be described in greater detail below (section 1). Afterwards we will discuss some limitations of this concept (section 2) and mechanisms ad organizational issues in order to promote the use of this concept (section 3).
Surveys play a major role in studying social and behavioral phenomena that are difficult to observe. Survey data provide insights into the determinants and consequences of human behavior and social interactions. Many domains rely on high quality survey data for decision making and policy implementation including politics, health, business, and the social sciences. Given a certain research question in a specific context, finding the most appropriate survey design to ensure data quality and keep fieldwork costs low at the same time is a difficult task. The aim of examining survey research methodology is to provide the best evidence to estimate the costs and errors of different survey design options. The goal of this thesis is to support and optimize the accumulation and sustainable use of evidence in survey methodology in four steps: (1) Identifying the gaps in meta-analytic evidence in survey methodology by a systematic review of the existing evidence along the dimensions of a central framework in the field (2) Filling in these gaps with two meta-analyses in the field of survey methodology, one on response rates in psychological online surveys, the other on panel conditioning effects for sensitive items (3) Assessing the robustness and sufficiency of the results of the two meta-analyses (4) Proposing a publication format for the accumulation and dissemination of metaanalytic evidence ; Umfragen spielen eine wichtige Rolle bei der Untersuchung sozialer und verhaltensbezogener Phänomene, die sonst nur schwer zu beobachten sind.

Identifies and discusses a number of methodological issues which can arise in the design and administration of instruments for the purpose of large‐scale survey research in manufacturing strategy and practice. Describes two such surveys. Both were undertaken by researchers at IMD, Lausanne, Switzerland. The first was a study of manufacturing strategies in western Europe, while the second was a study of manufacturing practice and performance in Switzerland. A comparison of the approaches taken in the design and administration of the two instruments allows for the identification of a number of methodological issues which are discussed in greater detail. These include sample (sector) selection, respondent preparation, quality assurance for data input, the elimination of bias and gathering of complementary data.
