This research briefing includes some preliminary results of a European Research Project under the title of GEITONIES, which was funded by the 7th Framework Program of the EU between 2008 and 2011. 'Geitonies' is the Greek term for neighborhood, and the multinational research team involved in this Project departed from the assumption that shared urban spaces prove vital in the creation of tolerance, mutual trust, inclusion, participation and social cohesion. In this sense, choosing the neighborhood as the main unit of analysis has allowed these researchers to explore some of the age-old sociological dilemmas related to interethnic relations and social cohesion from a new vantage point; furthermore, integration issues have also been reformulated by dealing with them from a relational perspective. The fieldwork was carried out in 18 neighborhoods of six different European cities (Lisbon, Rotterdam, Bilbao, Thessaloniki, Vienna and Warsaw). These neighborhoods served as a laboratory where one could study daily practices, representations, and interactions among the various social and ethnic groups. Adapted from the source document.

"Using a representative sample of 600 small, medium, and large Venezuelan industrial firms and three rounds of interviews, the survey team investigates these firms' strategies and business practices in areas ranging from technology transfer to personnel training and management. Interesting descriptive information despite a shallow analytical framework"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 57

Discusses the polar regions from a geopolitical perspective, focusing on strategic & environmental issues. After noting that the Arctic region is inhabited by indigenous peoples, while the Antarctic population is composed of international scientific teams, the coordinated development of international cooperative governability policies for the polar regions is explored. Drawing on analysis of political treaties on the Artic region & Antarctica, these areas prove to be highly relevant cases for international relations & environmental scientific research. J. Sadler
"Excellent study by a team of Colombian social scientists of the recent evolution of Colombian-Venezuelan relations and their process of integration. Analyzes Colombian and Venezuelan roles in the other country's foreign policy, evolution of bilateral relations (1989-92), commercial relations, and negotiations and agreements on border, commercial, transportation, energy, environmental, and other issues. Concludes that integration process has lost momentum and recommends the reduction of the number and complexity of issues under discussion, while focusing attention on implementation of agreements already reached"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 57
