This study focuses on team achievement goals and performance outcomes in interdependent sports teams. Team achievement goals reflect shared motivational states that exist exclusively at the team level. In a survey among 310 members of 29 premier-league field-hockey teams, team-level performance-approach, performance-avoidance, mastery-approach, and mastery-avoidance achievement goals explained 69% of the overall variance in team performance and 16% after controlling for previous performance. Teams performed better to the extent they were more approach- and less avoidance oriented in terms of both mastery and performance, although mastery-approach goals related to early-season team performance rather than predicting later changes in team performance.

Die Arbeit untersucht das Konzept und die praktische Arbeit der Regionalen Wiederaufbauteams (PRTs) als Instrument innerhalb des Engagements der internationalen Gemeinschaft in Afghanistan. Dabei steht zum einen die theoretische Erarbeitung des Ansatzes einschließlich seiner konzeptionellen Unterschiede bei den beteiligten Partnern im Vordergrund, zum anderen sollen anhand eines Analyserasters die Wirkungsmöglichkeiten der PRTs beurteilt werden, um daraus Schlussfolgerungen für die Einsatzmöglichkeiten des Instrumentes in Afghanistan sowie in anderen Szenarien zu ziehen. Die Arbeit kommt zu folgenden Schlussfolgerungen: PRTs sind als zivil-militärisches Instrument institutionalisierter Ausdruck einer integrierten Außen-, Sicherheits- und Entwicklungspolitik und der Entwicklung hin zum multidimensionalen Peacebuilding in den letzten zwei Dekaden. Der Ansatz ist inhaltlich flexibel, im Umfang skalierbar und ermöglicht die Beteiligung verschiedener Akteure, die andernfalls nur unter Schwierigkeiten in ein Stabilisierungs- und Wiederaufbauengagement zu integrieren sind. Der Ansatz verfügt über komparative Vorteile bei sicherheitsspezifischen Aufträgen, insbesondere bei der Unterstützung von Sicherheitssektorreformen. PRTs ermöglichen die Dislozierung von humanitärer Hilfe und Wiederaufbaukapazitäten in instabilem und unsicherem Umfeld. Sie können wertvolle Zeit für Stabilisierungs- und Wiederaufbaumissionen und für die Konfliktbearbeitung gewinnen. Sie sind jedoch kein Ersatz für staatliche Strukturen, sondern können lediglich positive Impulse für deren Aufbau leisten. Sie sind ebenfalls kein Ersatz für zivile Wiederaufbauhelfer und können für diese auch keine koordinierende Rolle einnehmen. PRTs können dem allgemeinen Verfall der Sicherheitslage, beispielsweise angesichts einer Aufstandsbewegung, wenig entgegensetzen und sind kein geeignetes Instrument zu ihrer Bekämpfung. Die Analyse zeigt, dass der Ansatz in Afghanistan unter schwierigen Bedingungen seine Tragfähigkeit bewiesen hat. Er ist ein nützliches Instrument im Portfolio des State- und Nation-Building, insbesondere mit Blick auf Szenarien von Post-Conflict- und Failed States. Gleichwohl ist eine realistische Erwartungshaltung an seine Wirkungsmöglichkeiten gerade vor dem Hintergrund des Einsatzes begrenzter Ressourcen, notwendig. Diese Erkenntnis gerät bisweilen, v.a. bei den politischen Akteuren, in den Hintergrund.

Though knowledge and information exchange are vital for the success of virtual intercultural teams, there is often an unarticulated assumption that it will developnaturally in the course of a collaboration. Data gathered from virtual German-Indian engineering teams indicates that variances in cultural communication routines lead toknowledge / information withholding, whether intentional or accidental, and impair team functioning. Consequently, effective facilitation is needed to create and maintainreciprocal cognitive and socio-emotional information exchange. The biggest challenge in this venture is achieving the proper synthesis between the structures needed to provide stability and the agile, open-ended VOPA approach required in a VUCA environment.To this end, some of the methods available to promote knowledge exchange are reviewed for their benefits on both fronts.

This article outlines the design, implementation, and evaluation of an innovative virtual team exercise. Cognitive, affective, and action-learning outcomes highlight the relevance of this grounded experiential exercise for management education and practice. Details are provided to enable the exercise to be adopted in a wide range of programs. Prior online experience, motivation, resistance to online environment, and trade-offs were found affect an overall positive experience reported by students.

Purpose– The purpose of this paper is to provide more insight into team temporal constructs and team satisfaction, this study proposes and tests a multiple mediation model of shared temporal cognition (STC), temporal conflict (TC), action processes, and team satisfaction.Design/methodology/approach– The authors test the theoretical model in a sample of 364 student teams (1,414 individuals) from universities in the USA, Switzerland, Germany, and Portugal. Participants completed questionnaires at three points in time.Findings– Results indicated a direct, positive relationship between STC and team satisfaction and a direct, negative relationship between TC and team satisfaction. Action processes and TC partially and sequentially mediated the relationship between STC and team satisfaction over time.Research limitations/implications– This study was restricted to self-report, to a student population, and to Western cultures. The study was not of an experimental nature which prevents making causal claims regarding relationships among variables.Practical implications– These results demonstrate the need for teams to be conscious of time and its relationship to team interaction and satisfaction. The authors advise both team leaders and members to acknowledge the importance of STC.Social implications– The need for temporal awareness and STC in collaborative endeavors, and the need to mindfully utilize action processes to minimize conflict and assist in the effective use of shared cognition is widely applicable from a societal perspective.Originality/value– This study provides new theoretical and empirical insight into a multiple mediation model including STC, TC, action processes, and team satisfaction. The size and multi-cultural nature of the sample also enhance the generalizability of the findings.
