The regional institutes of social and economic research were, with one exception, established in 1945 with a Parliament grant of 140 million pounds. The Colonial Office administers the funds and sets up various committees of scientists or persons with special knowledge of colonial territories to plan research programs in broad outline. The regional institutes, independent of the Colonial Office or governments, are commissioned to carry out these programs using their own detailed planning and organization. The 4 institutes in operation are: (1) the Rhodes-Livingston Institute, Northern Rhodesia,-assessing the 'effect of industrialization and migration labor on the economic development of Central Africa...'; (2) Institute of Social and Economic Research, Jamaica, -undertakes research in the areas served by the U Coll as a basis for teaching; (3) East African Institute of Social Research, Uganda,- studying types of cultures, urbanism, migratory movements, ethnography, etc.; (4) West African Institute of Social and Economic Research-working in the fields of ethnography, linguistics and economics. Two new institutes are planned: in the Malayan region and in the Gold Coast. D. Wolsk.
