It is hard to imagine a more concise summary of the prodigious work and voluminous publications in this field ... This volume should be available to students at the undergraduate level, to those in law school, and to all seriously concerned about an extremely important problem. This review in Choice was just one of the many favourable comments that greeted the appearance of the first edition of this book when it appeared in 1977. The trace elements in coal play an important role in its mining, treatment and usage. This book is a unique blend of relevant information on the 24 trace elements of environmental interest. Abstract
Cereal-based foods have great importance in the compensation of micro- and trace element deficiency, because 50% of the foods produced worldwide are made up of cereal grains. The aim of the research was to determine the concentration of macro-elements and trace elements in different cereals cultivated in Latvia. Various cereals were used in the research: rye (n = 45), barley (n = 54), spring wheat (n = 27), winter wheat (n = 53), triticale (n = 45) and oats (n = 42). Thirteen macro- and trace elements (Cd, Pb, Ni, Cr, Al, Cu, K, Na, Mn, Fe, Zn, Mg, Ca) were determined in cereal grain samples (n = 266). Macro-elements and trace elements varied significantly (p < 0.01 or p < 0.001). The highest concentrations of macro- and trace elements were found in oats and the lowest in rye. The obtained data will expand the opportunity for food and nutrition scientists to evaluate content of the examined elements in grain products, and dietary consumption (bioavailability) of the examined macro-elements and trace elements.

Data on the content of major ions (Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Cl–, SO42–, HCO3–) and dissolved trace elements (Rb, Cs, Be, Sr, Ba, B, Si, Pmin, V, Cr, Ge, As, Mo, W, Sb, Te, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Ag, Sn, Pb, Al, Ga, Ti, Zr, U) in the waters of 30 springs in Moscow during the winter low water period are presented. The geometric mean values and ranges of concentration of the studied components, as well as correlations between them, were established. The presence of hydrochemical anomalies of dissolved iron and manganese in the north-east of Moscow with an excess of maximum allowable concentration (MAC) for these elements was revealed, whereas in the rest of the city their concentration almost everywhere correspond to the natural background.
