The present research was conducted to measure transfer of training from a formation simulator to aircraft formation flying. Evidence in support of positive transfer was obtained by comparing students trained in the formation simulator with students who were essentially untrained and with students trained in the aircraft. This design provided data for a direct comparison of five simulator sorties with two aircraft sorties, in an effort to establish quickly a training cost/transfer comparison. The results indicate that simulator training has at least the effectiveness of two aircraft sorties.
The story of the company that was founded by the inventor of the snowmobile In 1942, Joseph-Armand Bombardier invented the snowmobile and founded his company to manufacture them. Not that Greenpeace actually puts it that way, they manage to get it the wrong way around: Flying in Europe up to 30 times cheaper than train, says GreenpeaceThe report is here and the facts are pretty much what we'd expect. Train routes of a couple of hours - Zurich Vienna say, Lisbon Porto, are highly competitive with flying. Longer distances the flight seems to become progressively cheaper.Of course, Greenpeace then gets this the wrong way around. They think that rail should be massively subsidised so as to make it cheaper for consumers than flying. Which is really very odd indeed. Because if flying is cheaper then it must be true that flying uses fewer resources than trains.Especially since European rail systems are all massively subsidised already and flying isn't - indeed it's done by profit making companies. Sure, there's the not having to pay tax on emissions - but even that's not quite true. Air Passenger Duty on flights from the UK is deliberately set at a rate to cover that. Flying's still cheaper. And, yes, British trains at least pay red diesel prices, largely untaxed that is.One aspect of this is that a train is an expensive piece of kit, just like a plane is. So, if it takes 24 hours to get somewhere - cross-Europe can do by rail - then that expensive piece of kit is tied up transporting that one load for 24 hours. Instead of the three hours perhaps for a plane. But those sorts of details we simply don't need to worry about. We've prices to inform us. All resources used in doing something are in the price. More expensive forms of transport therefore use more resources. Trains use more resources than planes because they're more expensive. And Greenpeace, in the name of saving resources, wants to get us all out of planes and into trains. Yes, of course we know Greenpeace was set up by addled hippies. But we weren't sure they were this addled. Let's expand resource use to save resources? That's some strong acid you're using there.

(2) (Ulrike Knipping)

This article explores the significance of the Phelophepa train, also known as the Phelophepa Health Care Train (HCT). This train started out with only three coaches but because of the need for its services and its subsequent success, it expanded to sixteen coaches in a very short period of time. Due to the lack of primary health care services in rural areas in South Africa, Transnet decided to introduce the train to assist in providing much needed primary health care in remote rural areas where it is often the case that there is only one doctor for plus/minus 5 000 patients. Good medical care is either unavailable or unaffordable for many people due to limited infrastructure and the meagre financial position of the majority of people in these remote areas. It was for this reason that Transnet identified a niche in the primary health care system and decided to invest in a project that would benefit the rural communities who required medical care. Transnet, in conjunction with the South African government and private companies, embarked on the Phelophepa HCT project to provide much needed medical care in such areas of South Africa. The name Phelophepa is derived from the Sotho and Tswana languages which are two of the eleven official languages spoken in South Africa, and roughly translated means "good, clean health". It is a train that has become a well-known and trusted beacon of hope in providing much needed medical care in rural South Africa.
