Language research is currently in a state of flux. The phenomenon of language is not merely the topic of investigation in linguistics, it is examined by a multitude of scholars with different scientific backgrounds. In order to examine how these various disciplines approach language, a think-tank was founded in 2002, called DITO, Dynamisch Inter(-en trans)disciplinair onderzoek, or Dynamic Inter- (and trans)disciplinary Research. The think-tank is located at the Belgian Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Free University of Brussels). This book provides short introductory articles to the language research conducted by some of the think-tank's most important members, from within the point of view of the following 5 disciplines: philosophy of evolutionary biology, cognitive science, neuroscience, sign language research and artificial intelligence.

The Siege of 's-Hertogenbosch and the Campaign of 1629 is one of the most illustrious events of the Eighty Years' War in the history of the Netherlands. However, its image and interpretations have hardly changed in the past decades, in particular its international significance, as well as the story of the losing side: the Dutch Spaniards and the city of 's-Hertogenbosch, which has so far remained underexposed. Based on broad and often unused source material, this book sheds a new light on this "glorious, but dangerous years" event. In addition to the political and military aspects, this book also provides insight into the experiences and opinions of ordinary soldiers, city- and rural dwellers. This approach creates new insights into the war in the Netherlands, where the Siege of 's-Hertogenbosch is indeed justly affirmed as an impressive event.

One hundred years after the founding of the École Coloniale Supérieure in Antwerp, the adjacent Middelheim Museum invites Sandrine Colard, researcher and curator, to conceive an exhibition that probes silenced histories of colonialism in a site-specific way. For Colard, the term Congoville encompasses the tangible and intangible urban traces of the colony, not on the African continent but in 21st-century Belgium: a school building, a park, imperial myths, and citizens of African descent. In the exhibition and this adjoining publication, the concept Congoville is the starting point for 15 contemporary artists to address colonial history and ponder its aftereffects as black flâneurs walking through a postcolonial city.
Due to the multitude of perspectives and voices, this book is both a catalogue and a reference work comprised of artistic and academic contributions. Together, the participating artists and invited authors unfold the blueprint of Congoville, an imaginary city that still subconsciously affects us, but also encourages us to envision a decolonial utopia.
