Der Beitrag zur Friedens- und Sicherheitspolitik des Westens im Mittleren Osten beleuchtet die Mittelost-Politik der USA seit den 1960er Jahren. Dabei gliedern sich die Ausführungen chronologisch in folgende Abschnitte: (1) 'Twin pillar'-Strategie, bei der Iran und Saudi-Arabien als Verbündete an die USA gebunden und aufgerüstet werden, (2) Zusammenbruch der 'twin pillar'-Strategie und der Zweite Golfkrieg 1991, (3) Nahostpolitik unter Clinton ab 1993, geprägt von der Strategie des 'dual containment' gegenüber Iran und Irak, der fortgesetzten Kooperation mit den regionalen Alliierten in Verbindung mit einer dauerhaften Truppenpräsenz sowie der intensivierten Einwirkung auf den israelisch-palästinensischen Konflikt, (4) Scheitern des 'dual containment' Ende der 1990er Jahre und der verminderte Einfluss in der Region sowie (5) die US-amerikanische Nahostpolitik unter G. W. Bush seit 2001. Zusammenfassend merkt der Autor an: Die Konsequenzen, die von den Neokonservativen aus den negativen Folgen vormaliger US-Nahostpolitik strategisch gezogen und praktisch mit den Kriegen in Afghanistan und Irak umzusetzen versucht wurden, erscheinen in dieser Perspektive als Fortsetzung einer gescheiterten Politik mit noch schlechteren Mitteln. Featuring contributions from an interdisciplinary and international group of scholars, each essay looks at a particular imaginary world in-depth, and world-building issues associated with that world. Die Autorin kommentiert eine Reihe von architektonischen Entwürfen und Visionen für eine Neubebauung von "Ground Zero". Der Terroranschlag auf das World Trade Center hat ein mehrdimensionales Loch im urbanen Gefüge New Yorks hinterlassen: Es fehlen plötzlich nicht nur 65.000 Quadratmeter Büroraum, sondern es fehlt auch ein wichtiger Bezugspunkt für die innerstädtisch verlaufenden Bewegungen, vor allem für Manhattans dominierende Nord-Süd-Achse. Schwerer wiegt jedoch der durch den Zusammenbruch der Zwillingstürme verursachte Verlust für die New Yorker Skyline: Die Türme waren Symbole des Weltkapitals und gaben New York eine unverwechselbare und markante Silhouette. Der architektonische Nachfolger der Twin Towers muss nicht nur deren ursprüngliche Qualitäten aufweisen, sondern auch auf das Ergebnis reagieren, das diese zu Fall gebracht hat. Er hat die nationale Bedrohung und ihre Bewältigung zu verarbeiten, er soll als Ort der Kommunikation, als politische Demonstration, als Grabmal und Gedächtnisstätte fungieren, zugleich genügend Arbeits- und Wohnraum zur Verfügung stellen und nicht zuletzt auch den öffentlichen Nahverkehr neu organisieren. Die Architektur ist vor allem aufgefordert, ein Zeichen für die Überwindung derjenigen Konflikte zu setzen, die dem Attentat offensichtlich zugrunde liegen. (ICI2)
