Social changes, such as the expansion of legal forms of gambling, can influence not only the prevalence of gambling, but can also shape the relative importance of genetic and environmental contributions to individual differences in the propensity to gamble. In the present study, I examined differences in the prevalence and in the relative contribution of genetic and environmental factors to gambling involvement in the United States in 1962 versus 2002. The data came from two sources: (1) a survey of 839 17-year-old same-sex twin pairs from the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test twin study, and (2) an interview of 477 18- to 26-year-old same-sex twin pairs from Wave III of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. Similar measures of gambling participation were included in the two studies. Evidence for a genotype-by-time interaction was evaluated by testing whether the contribution of genetic influences was greater in the more recently born cohort of twins. Despite the major changes in the gambling landscape over the intervening 40 years, there was no evidence for such an interaction. The contribution of genetic factors and environmental factors did not significantly differ and there was no evidence for genetic influences at either time point. Instead, the variation in the propensity to gamble was explained nearly equally by common and unique environmental factors. Explanations for this surprising finding are discussed.

Twin research in Brazil twin has expanded enormously in recent years, engaging the interests and efforts of many investigators, students and twins. Descriptions and brief summaries of this work and talks given by investigators at local conferences are presented, based on my four-city lecture tour. This is followed by summaries of twin research on infants' viewing of social scenes, religiosity and substance abuse, Down syndrome, and chronic periodontitis. This article concludes with twin-related news and information of general interest, including identical twin property designers, twins with cerebral palsy, twins affected with the Zika virus, a pair of twin writers, twins in sports, and a set of quadruplets from my childhood neighborhood in Riverdale, New York.

The genetic contribution of blood pressure and heart rate (HR) varied widely between studies. Demographic factors such as ethnicity, age and/or sex might explain some of the heterogeneity. We performed a systematic review focusing on four phenotypes: systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), HR and pulse pressure (PP). Meta-regression was conducted to analyze potential factors in relation to SBP and DBP heritability. A total of 10,613 independent twins that came from 17 studies were included in the analysis. The weighted mean value of heritability for SBP and DBP was 0.54 (95% CIs: 0.48–0.60) and 0.49 (95% CIs: 0.42–0.56). Comparatively, three studies of HR and four studies of PP heritability were limited for the heterogeneity test. Meta-regression showed that, on average, SBP heritability with additive genes/unique environment (AE) model tend to have a higher heritability than additive genes/shared environment/unique environment (ACE) model (coefficient = 0.0947,p= .0142). A similar result was found for DBP as well. No other factors such as sex, age, ethnicity, publication year were significantly associated with heritability variance. Our study shows heritability estimates based on twin studies of both SBP and DBP are around 50%, using an AE rather than an ACE model; the variance due to C ended up in A, suggesting that the AE model may overestimate heritability if a small contribution of shared environment exists.

Highlights from the 15th International Congress of Twin Studies are presented. The congress was held November 16–19, 2014 in Budapest, Hungary. This report is followed by summaries of research addressing the differentiation of MZ co-twins by single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), an unusual error in infant twin-singleton hospital registration, twins with childhood-onset narcolepsy with cataplexy, and the parenting effects of hearing loss in one co-twin. Media interest in twins covers a new Broadway musical based on the conjoined twins Violet and Daisy Hilton, male twins becoming famous in fashion, twins who turned 102 and unique insights from a conjoined twin survivor.

AbstractWith the development of large twin-family registers worldwide (see the December 2006 issue of Twin Research and Human Genetics for an overview) new options for research projects become feasible, including longitudinal studies. In this special issue on Longitudinal Twin and Family Studies, several aspects of longitudinal research are highlighted and an overview of results is given from European, Australian and United States twin studies. These studies deal with a time span from birth to adulthood and a wide range of phenotypes is covered. Data collection in some studies is age/cohort driven; in others, subjects are followed from different ages at regular time intervals. Most studies are based on data collection in twins, but adoption and parent–offspring data designs are described as well. The overview of results of current longitudinal projects makes this special issue a reference resource for longitudinal research in developmental behavior genetics.

AbstractThe Keio Twin Research Center (KoTReC) was established in 2009 at Keio University to combine two longitudinal cohort projects — the Keio Twin Study (KTS) for adolescence and adulthood and the Tokyo Twin Cohort Project (ToTCoP) for infancy and childhood. KoTReC also conducted a two-time panel study of self-control and psychopathology in twin adolescence in 2012 and 2013 and three independent anonymous cross-sectional twin surveys (ToTcross) before 2012 — the ToTCross, the Junior and Senior High School Survey and the High School Survey. This article introduces the recent research designs of KoTReC and its publications.

Selected highlights from the 14th International Congress on Twin Studies, set in Florence, Italy in April 2012, are presented. This meeting, which traditionally occurred every three years, is now being held every two years. Reviews of research on the topics of stress and aging (telomere erosion), the genetics of MZ twinning, developmental dysplasia, and fertility of mothers of twins follow. The final section includes several public interest items, namely an exhibit of twins' video portraits, unusual physical look-alikes, and young and adult twin television and film actors.

A foundation for studying multiple myeloma, launched by a monozygotic twin, is described. Twin studies of that disease are also examined. A summary of selected research studies and news events follows, with specific reference to a new critique of twin research, sexual attraction in separated opposite-sex twins, twinning rates following assisted reproductive technology and family histories of multiple implantation. Human interest topics cover a gathering of researchers from the Minnesota Study of Twins Reared Apart, morning sickness and twin pregnancy, sexuality in conjoined twins, a famous hidden twin, and a film about switched at birth babies.

AbstractElizabeth M. Bryan: Tributes From Home and AbroadMay 13, 1942 – February 21, 2008The life and work of Dr Elizabeth M. Bryan, our late distinguished twin studies colleague, are remembered. Tributes come from colleagues in the United States and the United Kingdom, where Elizabeth lived and worked. This section is followed by reviews of twin research on anorexia nervosa, self-esteem and DNA differences in monozygotic twins. The lives of some noteworthy twins are also briefly chronicled, both for their scientific value and human interest. An update on current twinning rates follows.

The 2016 Satellite Meeting of the International Society of Twin Studies took place on June 20 in Brisbane, Australia. The host institution was the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute. An overview of selected presentations and activities is provided. This synopsis is followed by a brief tribute to the recent passing of our esteemed colleague, Dr Irving I. Gottesman. Next, there are summaries of research on monozygotic twinning after single embryo transfer, a twin study of mononucleosis susceptibility, cerebral injury following twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome surgery, and a correction and clarification regarding an article by Segal (2016) on the Brazilian Twin Registry. Human interest articles cover a hospital whose 2015 newborns included 16 pairs of twins born in 1 month, the death of an identical twin playwright, twin themes in advertising, conjoined twins separated in Saudi Arabia, and the dismissed charges of the murder of one twin by her co-twin.

Dr Irving I. Gottesman, a colleague, friend, and long-time member of the International Society of Twin Studies passed away on June 29, 2016. His contributions to twin research and some personal reflections are presented to honor both the man and the memory. This tribute is followed by short reviews of twin research concerning differences between cosmetic surgical techniques, the rearing of preterm twins, behavioral observations of dichorionic fetal twins, and the outcomes of co-bedding twins with reference to stress reduction. Interesting and informative articles in the media describe identical co-twins who delivered infants on the same day, educational policies regarding twins in Bosnia and the United Kingdom, unusual practices of twin auctioneers, and a theatrical production,Sister, featuring identical twins in the leading roles.

AbstractFindings related to visual functioning, drawn from early reared-apart twin studies, are summarized. These data are supplemented by more recent research from similar investigations. This section is followed by a survey of findings and conclusions from a special issue of the journal Seminars in Perinatology concerning the challenges and management of conjoined twins. An early case report on thoracopagus-conjoined twin cattle is also presented, as are neuroanatomical findings from a study of monozygotic twins discordant for musical training. Items noted in the news include college benefits for twin parents, an update on octomom, claims of gene editing of infant twins, the nature of quarternary marriages and an unusual planned twin pregnancy.

Conjoined twins are rare, but craniopagus conjoined twins are rarer still. A pair of four-year-old craniopagus female twins with an unusual brain structure may offer new clues as to how the brain functions. This overview is followed by reviews of recent twin research on mothers of twins, twin transfusion syndrome, twin delivery options and twin literary themes. Relevant topics appearing in the media include twin tennis champions, twins' parallel lives and deaths, a new book for families with twins and a performance about a twin musical legend.

The Netherlands Twin Register (NTR) began in 1987 with data collection in twins and their families, including families with newborn twins and triplets. Twenty-five years later, the NTR has collected at least one survey for 70,784 children, born after 1985. For the majority of twins, longitudinal data collection has been done by age-specific surveys. Shortly after giving birth, mothers receive a first survey with items on pregnancy and birth. At age 2, a survey on growth and achievement of milestones is sent. At ages 3, 7, 9/10, and 12 parents and teachers receive a series of surveys that are targeted at the development of emotional and behavior problems. From age 14 years onward, adolescent twins and their siblings report on their behavior problems, health, and lifestyle. When the twins are 18 years and older, parents are also invited to take part in survey studies. In sub-groups of different ages, in-depth phenotyping was done for IQ, electroencephalography , MRI, growth, hormones, neuropsychological assessments, and cardiovascular measures. DNA and biological samples have also been collected and large numbers of twin pairs and parents have been genotyped for zygosity by either micro-satellites or sets of short nucleotide polymorphisms and repeat polymorphisms in candidate genes. Subject recruitment and data collection is still ongoing and the longitudinal database is growing. Data collection by record linkage in the Netherlands is beginning and we expect these combined longitudinal data to provide increased insights into the genetic etiology of development of mental and physical health in children and adolescents.
