The different histories of the West Bank and Gaza Strip led to several divisions between the two regions. The paper adresses how federal relationship in the Palestinian Territories could ensure their integrity and safety as a single unit and how the two areas may be represented in national bodies. Considerable attention is given to the limitations regarding the transitional phase that are inherent in the DoP, and which will hinder attempts at securing cohesion between the two areas. Annex: Public opinion polls, conducted in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. (PASSIA/DÜI)

"For a long time, the history of war was the prerogative of military officers. After World War Two, it saw significant reorientations. Military history evolved into a more global history, which aims to analyse the interaction of war with societies. These historiographical changes progressively affected researchers who deal with the history of the Medieval Near East. This pluridisciplinary book, gathering historians and archeologists, aims to give an assessment of the historiography of war in the Medieval Near East, and to provide new and original research perspectives. This book confirms that war played a key role in the development of Near Eastern societies from the tenth to the fifteenth century"

"In Interpreting the Qur'ān with the Bible, R. Michael McCoy III brings together two lesser known yet accomplished commentators on the Qur'ān and the Bible: the muʻtabir Abū al-Ḥakam ʻAbd al-Salām b. al-Išbīlī (d. 536/1141), referred to as Ibn Barraǧān, and qāri' al-qurrā' Ibrāhīm b. ʻUmar b. Ḥasan al-Biqāʻī (d. 885/1480). In this comparative study, comprised of manuscript analysis and theological exegesis, a robust hermeneutic emerges that shows how Ibn Barraǧān's method of naẓm al-Qur'ān and al-Biqāʻī's theory of ʻilm munāsabāt al-Qur'ān motivates their reading and interpretation of the Arabic Bible. The similarities in their quranic hermeneutics and approach to the biblical text are astounding as each author crossed established boundaries and pushed the acceptable limits of handling the Bible in their day"--

Rashīd al-Dīn Hamadānīʾs (d. 718/1319) Jāmiʿ al-tawārīkh has been described by many as the first world history ever. Composed in Persian for the Mongol Il-khans Ghāzān (r. 1295-1304) and Öljeitü (Uljāytu, r. 1304-16), its aim was to set out the history and condition of the Mongol people, conquerors of the world (part one), followed by a description of the other peoples and nations of the world and their histories (part two). Given its unprecedented scope, Rashīd, vizier to both rulers, mobilized a whole team of specialists, informants, and collaborators to assist him in his task. Making use of written and oral sources, the part on the Mongols is a key source on the emergence and organisation of the Mongol empire, while the second part constitutes the first attempt ever at writing a history of the world. The section published here describes the history of the Jews
