Vor 20 Jahren erschütterten die Chaostage die Messestadt Hannover. In den bis dato schwersten Auseinandersetzungen der bundesdeutschen Nachtkriegsgeschichte, brachte eine subkulturelle Strömung aus Punks, Skinheads und anderen, die Ordnungsvorstellung der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft ins Wanken. Die Chaostage heute noch einmal als riot zu betrachten, öffnet den Blick auf ihre materielle und mediale Wirkung. Dabei wird deutlich, wie eine Unruhe Sinnzusammenbrüche der lebensweltlich erfahrbaren sozialen Ordnung verursacht. Diese Sinnentleerung motivierte infolge der Chaostage 1995 eine mediale Mobilmachung, um neuen Sinn zuzuschreiben und zu verstehen, was auf der Straße faktisch passiert war. Der riot wurde dabei mit seiner eigenen Spektakularität konfrontiert, er wurde fremddefiniert und somit den Beteiligten eine eigene Darlegung ihres Handelns verwehrt. Die Punks griffen diesen Punkt auf und hielten der medialen Hysterie ihr karnevaleskes Zerrbild entgegen. ; Twenty years ago, the so-called Chaos days shattered the city of Hannover. In the most intense civil commotions since World War II, a subcultural mélange of punks, skinheads and other factions damaged the public understanding of social order. To analyze the Chaos days in the context of an emerging riots discourse opens perspectives for material and media-related effects. Moreover it focuses on riots as disturbances and ruptures of social order perceived in the lifeworld. This is a breakdown of social sense. Because it is not immediately possible to make sense of a riot, the media began – in the case of the Chaos days – to fill the fissures, it had created. The media named, defined and pursued the genuinely modern goal of verstehen. Riots are often defined and filled with sense by society and its spectacle, not by the rioter themselves. Chaos days picked up this point in a karnevalesk way: They confronted the public with an own interpretation and a distorted picture of public hysteria.
In August 2011, severe social unrest came to several English cities for about 30 years. For five consecutive days and nights young adults fought street battles with the police and numerous shops were plundered; between 13,000-15,000 people participated, five were killed. The official policy reacted predominantly with a mixture of criminalization and depoliticization: Prime Minister Cameron characterized the riots as as 'criminality, pure and simple'. Ausgelöst durch den Hungerstreik des 21-jährigen griechischen Anarchisten und Gefängnisinsassen Nikos Romanos fanden im Zeitraum November-Dezember 2014 landesweite Solidaritätsproteste in Griechenland statt. Dieser Artikel liefert einen umfangreichen Einblick in die Protestereignisse und stellt dabei, in Anknüpfung an das Verständnis von Politik im Sinne der Neueren Theorien des Politischen, für Griechenland die Entwicklung hin zu einer postpolitischen Ordnung fest, in welcher es keinen Raum für politische Subjektivierung und die Artikulation von Dissens gibt. Der Artikel vertritt die These, dass es der Romanos-Bewegung gelang, diesen postpolitischen Zustand temporär zu unterbrechen, indem sie mithilfe mehrerer politischer Praktiken, Demonstrationen, Besetzungen und riots, ihren eigenen Raum konfigurierte, in welchem die Protestierenden als politische Subjekte ihren Streit mit dem Staat austragen konnten.Damit schreibt der Artikel riots, entgegen hegemonialer Deutungen von riots als isolierte apolitische Ereignisse, eine politische Dimension zu. ; Triggered by the hunger strike of 21-year old Greek anarchist and prison inmate Nikos Romanos in the period of November-December 2014 a nationwide solidarity movement was formed in Greece. This article provides a broad insight into the protest events. Following the understanding of the Newer Theories of the Political it diagnoses for Greece the development towards a post-political order, in which there is no space for political subjectivation and the articulation of dissent. The article argues that the Romanos Movement managed to disrupt this state of order temporarily through several political practices, demonstrations, occupations and riots, thus configuring its own space in which the protesters as political subjects could have their dispute. Therefore, the article understands riots as political, thus contradicting the hegemonic notion of riots as isolated apolitical events.
In an entry of his 1916 journal, Hans Paasche (1881-1920) wrote a long reflection on metánoia, a concept indicating a radical shift in thinking. In fact, the whole life of Hans Paasche itself could be read as such a radical conversion. He was all that follows: officer in the repression of the Maji-Maji riots in the German colonies of Ostafrika, skilled hunter, volunteer in the Great War, and then vigorous pacifist, relentless opponent of alcohol abuse and fervent vegetarian, ironic writer and passionate political reformer. In a context in which attempts at change were seen as traitorous, his life shows that self-acknowledgement may lead to marginalisation and to murder. The absence of forgiveness and understanding in his case still continues and his work and thought have been almost totally removed from any public and literary discourse in Germany. This paper intends to analyze his thought through his works, mainly "Die Forschungsreise des Afrikaners Lukanga Mukara ins innerste Deutschland", highlighting how, in his later years, Paasche felt the need to communicate his traumatic experiences with the intent of avoiding their repetition.
Die Arbeitsbedingungen mittelalterlicher Autoren liegen aufgrund der schlechten Quellenlage bis heute weitgehend im Dunkeln. Dies gilt insbesondere für den altwestnordischen Kulturraum, dessen Autoren vorwiegend anonym in der Volkssprache schrieben. Die vorliegende Dissertation versucht diesen Kenntnisrückstand an einem konkreten Text aufzuarbeiten. Als Untersuchungsgegenstand wurde Jóns saga baptista 2 (Island, 13. Jh.) gewählt, weil der Text einerseits kaum behandelt worden ist, andererseits durch den namentlich bekannten Autor wie Auftraggeber eine zuverlässige Verankerung im historischen Kontext seiner Entstehung ermöglicht. Dieser Kontext ist geprägt von politischen Umbrüchen und dem Beginn einer neuen stilistischen Epoche in der Literatur. Die Untersuchung wird von folgenden Fragen geleitet: (1) Welche Quellen standen isländischen mittelalterlichen Autoren zur Verfügung? (2) Wie verwendeten sie diese? (3) Wie wurde ihr Schaffen von den soziopolitischen Umständen geprägt? Hierzu wurden die Quellen durch Rückübersetzung und Stichwortsuche in lateinischen Textdatenbanken identifiziert und einem genauen Vergleich unterzogen. Der soziopolitische Zusammenhang wurde durch die Erhebung dominierender Motive und den Abgleich mit zeitgenössischen Quellen beleuchtet. Im Einzelnen wurden folgende Ergebnisse erlangt: (1) 37 lateinische Texte von 23 spätantiken und mittelalterlichen Autoren wurden als Quellen der Saga identifiziert, zu denen der Autor teils direkt, teils zweiter Hand in Form von Homiliaren, Historienbibeln und Enzyklopädien Zugriff hatte. (2) Im Umgang mit seinen Vorlagen zeigt der Autor eine autonome Flexibilität und passt die aus dem Lateinischen ererbten Phänomene an die Bedingungen seiner Quellen und Arbeitssprache an. Sein Selbstverständnis lässt sich innerhalb der Koordinaten auctor, translator, commentator und compilator platzieren; eine solche Differenzierung ist für das 13. Jh. charakteristisch. Als ebenfalls typisch erweist sich die stilistische Ausrichtung des Textes nach kontinentalen hagiographischen und exegetischen Traditionen. (3) An der hohen Anzahl kirchenrechtlicher Zitate zeigt sich außerdem, dass zeitgenössische Reformen im kanonischen und säkularen Recht und dadurch hervorgerufene politische Konflikte in Island (sog. staðamál siðarri ) einen großen Einfluss auf Inhalt und Form des Textes hatten. Der Saga liegt eine politische Intention zugrunde, die sich nur aus einer neuen, exakten Datierung auf die Jahre 1285/86 erklären lässt. Die Studie gibt dem Leser einen tiefen Einblick in die Quellen, Ausbildung und Arbeitstechniken eines gelehrten Verfassers und seine Verstrickungen in die Kirchenpolitik. Sie konkretisiert die politische und kulturelle Situation Islands unmittelbar nach dem Verlust der politischen und ökonomischen Unabhängigkeit an Norwegen und beweist, dass die isländische klerikale Elite Anschluss an die Gelehrsamkeit und Kirchenpolitik im übrigen Europa hatte. ; The Church Fathers and ecclesiastical politics in Grímr Hólmsteinsson's Jóns saga baptista Up to the present day, the working conditions of medieval authors have remained obscure until today because of our limited access to their sources. This applies particularly to the Old Norse cultural milieu, where, for the most part, authors worked anonymously and in the vernacular. The present study aims to close this gap with a detailed case study focusing on Jóns saga baptista 2 (Iceland, 13 th century). This text has been chosen for investigation because it has hardly been examined despite the reliable information that survives regarding its production context. This context is characterised by political riots and the invention of a new manner of writing. In this investigation, the saga was examined according to the following research questions: (1) Which sources were used by this particular Old Norse authors? (2) How did he use them? (3) How was his work conditioned by sociopolitical circumstances? For this purpose, the sources for Jóns saga baptista 2 were identified and analysed according to a precise textual comparison. An understanding of their sociopolitical context was developed on the basis of predominant motives in the saga and their comparison with contemporary sources. The following results were obtained: (1) 37 Latin texts by 23 Late Ancient and Medieval authors were identified as the saga's sources. The author accessed these sources either directly or by transmission via homiliaries, history bibles and encyclopedias. (2) The author approached these sources freely and adopted Latin phenomena to his working conditions and target language. He evidently conceived of himself within established terms such as auctor, translator, commentator or compilator , distinctions which are characteristic of the 13 th century. Likewise, the text's stylistic features comply with 13 th -century exegetical and hagiographic traditions. (3) By addressing novelties in canon law, the saga reveals itself as being influenced in both form and content by contemporary law reforms and resulting political strife in Iceland (so-called staðamál siðarri ). Read against this historical background, the writing of the saga implies political intentions that can be explained only by its creation around the year 1285/86. The study provides an in-depth investigation into the sources, education and working methods of a learned author and and documents his entanglement with ecclesiastical politics. It substantiates Iceland's political and cultural situation after the loss of independence to Norway and demonstrates the participation of Icelandic church elites in the learned circles and church politicas of Europe at large.
