This urban renaissance review of Glasgow looks back over the 1990s, when a succession of strategic initiatives and major events brought regeneration to several key parts of the city, including along the banks of the Clyde, and helped lift investment and activity. This book provides a policy tool kit for Glasgow, with the aim of improving the distressed urban areas that are holding the city back

The city of Palaio Faliro is a suburb of Athens, around 9 km from the city centre of the Greek capital, located on the southern coast of the Athens Riviera with a population of nearly 65.000 inhabitants. The municipality of Palaio Faliro has recently achieved a regeneration of its urban profile and dynamics, which extends on an area of Athens southern costal zone combining historic baths, a marina, an urban park, an Olympic Sports Complex and the tramway. The final result promotes sustainable development and sustainable mobility on the Athens coastline taking into consideration the recent metropolisation of the Athens agglomeration. After a brief history of the municipality, we present the core of the new development. Behind the visible results, we highlight the main interactions among the principal actors that made this change possible, and constitute the main challenges for the future. With this case we learn that while the arrangement of space has its logistic difficulties regarding financial and engineering aspects, the deeper challenge is that of exercising democracy justly - and even more so, in its own birthplace.
"A quarter of a century ago, Professor Peter Borsay identified a specifically urban phenomenon of cultural revival that took root in the late seventeenth century, leading to the flowering of a wide range of cultural forms and the extensive remodelling of the townscape along classically inspired lines. Borsay called this the 'English Urban Renaissance'. These essays, including Borsay's reflective and thought-provoking revisiting of his concept, offer a wide-ranging exploration of the continuing and still developing impact of the 'English Urban Renaissance' and investigate the wider impact of the concept beyond England. The essays reiterate the importance of provincial towns as hubs of economic, cultural and political activity and the strength and vitality of urban culture beyond the metropolis. They trace the development of urban culture over time in the light of the concept of 'urban renaissance', showing how urban townscapes and cultural life were transformed throughout the long eighteenth century. Together, they establish the continuing impact and importance of Borsay's concept, demonstrate the breadth of its influence in the UK and beyond, and point to possible areas of research for the future."--

This study focuses on the "European city" model and its impact on urban policies, emphasising city centre housing as a central issue. The urban renaissance as it is discussed in literature will also be reconsidered, as this study seizes on these two subject matters and explores their relation looking at Berlin's historic city centre as the study area. The development of Berlin's historic city centre as a housing location since 1990 is analysed showing how in four phases the change of this area from a marginal populated urban frontier to one of Berlin's most favoured and expensive housing locations has developed using the "European City" as a development model.
Canberra is at a turning point in its history. It established a reputation in the twentieth century as a model for city planning, but some of the assumptions which guided its development in the past need to be re-examined in the light of current trends and the goals of sustainable development.
