This study aims to state the relation between the nature of municipal elections and the degree of urbanisation of the municipalities.In Belgium the municipal elections show a very great diversity in their electoral figures . Five categories of electoral figures are frequent : elections without competition (in the map as : verkiezingen zonder strijd),totally local electoral figure (in the map as : uitsluitend plaatselijke verkiezingsgestalte), predominantly local electoral figure (in the map as : overwegend plaatselijke verkiezingsgestalte), mixed electoral figure (in the map as : gemengde verkiezingsgestalte), predominantly national electoral figure (in the map as : overwegend nationale verkiezingsgestalte).The two existing operationalizations of urbanisation in Belgium are used for the urbanisation degree of the municipalities : that of W. Van Waelvelde and H. Van der Haegen as well as that of I. De Lanoo,U. Claeys and M. Sansen. The frequency of the different types of electoral figures at the municipal elections, seen in the categories of urbanisation according to both above mentioned operationalizations, indicates a positive relation between growing urbanisation and the shifting from local to predominantly national electoral figures. This does not mean that the predominantly national electoral figure can be found exclusively in the highest category of urbanisation, nor that the exclusively local electoral figure and the elections without competition can only happen in rural regions. But it is a fact that the gravity-centre of the rather national electoral figures lies in urbanised municipalities and towns, whereas the gravity- centre of local electoral figures lies in rural municipalities. Bahrdt's thesis of the «Verfall der kommunalen öffentlichkeit» and for the parallel hypothesis of the tenuous zone, formulated by Sj . Groenman.

China's rise is one of the transformative events of our time. Aspects of Urbanization in China: Shanghai, Hong Kong, Guangzhou examines some of the aspects of China's massive wave of urbanization - the largest the world has ever seen. The various papers in the book, written by academics from different disciplines, represent ongoing research and exploration and give a useful snapshot in a rapidly developing discourse. Their point of departure is the city - Shanghai, Hong Kong and Guangzhou - where the downside of China's miraculous economic growth is most painfully apparent. And it is concern for the citizens of these cities that unifies the papers in a book whose authors seek to understand what life is like for the people who call them home. - China's opkomst als wereldmacht is een van de ingrijpendste gebeurtenissen van deze tijd. Honderden miljoenen mensen zijn de armoede ontvlucht dankzij de snelle industrialisatie van het land. De wonderbaarlijke economische groei van China heeft zijn nadelen, iets wat vaak het meest pijnlijk duidelijk wordt in de steden. Deze studie is geschreven door wetenschappers uit verschillende disciplines, waaronder architectuur, stedenbouw, sociale wetenschappen, aardrijkskunde en antrolpologie. Een dee van de auteurs behandelt de mondiale ambities van de steden, terwijl andere hun culturele en architecturale uitingen onderzoeken.

Industrialisering en verstedelijking maakten de steden in Nederland en elders in Europa vanaf het einde van de negentiende eeuw tot de machinekamer waar nieuwe sociale, economische en ruimtelijke verhoudingen vorm kregen. Wonen, werken, handeldrijven, verplaatsen en recreëren in de stad werden mogelijk gemaakt door de stedelijke overheid. Daarmee werd stadsbestuur onderwerp van wetenschappelijke en staatkundige discussies. In deze studie worden de aard en context van deze discussies gedurende de eerste decennia van de twintigste eeuw geanalyseerd in relatie tot de veranderende stedelijke bestu

Dit verkennend onderzoek heeft als doel om te begrijpen hoe bestuurlijke processen in kleine steden institutioneel zijn ontworpen, gezien hun huidige contextuele uitdagingen. Het richt zich op het geval van Cirebon stad en de omliggende regio's, in Indonesië. Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat, ten eerste, kleine steden zoals Cirebon worden geconfronteerd met uitdagingen van snelle verstedelijking, gebrekkige natuurlijke hulpbronnen en stedelijke diensten, alsmede een plotselinge verandering door decentralisatie en regionale autonomie. Ten tweede toont de case studie een beperkte financiële draagkracht van de lokale overheid en de lopende decentralisatieprocessen. Deze factoren zorgen voor beperkingen om te komen tot formele vormen van institutioneel ontwerp. Tegelijkertijd laten de kleine stad en de omliggende regio's veelbelovende tekenen zien van een bredere institutionele capaciteit voor governance. Helaas worden deze capaciteiten aangetast door processen van ongelijkheid en de controle van middelen door één van de betrokken actoren. De capaciteiten hebben ook te maken met een sterke autoritaire politieke cultuur, geërfd van een vorig gecentraliseerd regime. Een cruciale stap is daarom de introductie van meer mogelijkheden op het regionale niveau, zodat interlokale rivaliteit wordt overstegen. De 'cityness' van de Indonesische kleine steden binnen snel verstedelijkende regio's laat zich kenmerken door "substantieel intense en dynamische lokale onderlinge relaties tussen kern en periferie, die beide concurreren voor ruimte, middelen, identiteit en invloed". De kleinheid van een stad uit zichvooral in de realiteit dat het bereik van een kleine stad is verzwakt door decentralisatie. De mate waarin een kleine stad in staat is om zijn gereduceerde invloed te overwinnen en te blijven groeien, hangt af van de institutionele capaciteit van alle actoren in informele nieuwe netwerken. Met andere woorden, de institutionele capaciteit van een stad binnen een decentraliserend systeem is in steeds grotere mate bepalend.

Empirische verkenningen van bedrijfsinnovatie, overheidsinterventie en bedrijfsprestaties in Europese landen De algemene doelstellingen van het onderzoek in dit proefschrift zijn: ten eerste het analyseren van het innovatieproces bij verschillende soorten innovatie, waarbij het bedrijf wordt gebruikt als analyse-eenheid; ten tweede het onderzoeken van de relatie tussen bedrijfsinnovatie en productiviteit; en ten derde het onderzoeken van de relatie tussen overheidsinterventie en bedrijfsprestaties in Europa. De voornaamste bevindingen zijn dat de innovatie-inspanningen, de kapitaalintensiteit, de grootte, de locatie en het ondernemingsklimaat voor bedrijven in Ierland belangrijke variabelen zijn voor innovatie; dat er wat betreft Ierland een economisch-geografisch effect is dat het stedelijke-hiërarchiemodel ondersteunt, waarin verstedelijking belangrijk is voor productinnovatie en minder belangrijk is voor procesinnovaties; dat innovatie een positief effect heeft op de mate van productiviteit van bedrijven, ongeacht de soort innovatie (product/proces) en economie (innovatie-/transitiegedreven economieën) in Europese bedrijven; dat er factoren zijn die pleiten voor beleidsinterventie in Europa ten aanzien van niet-innoverende bedrijven, afhankelijk van waar de tijdelijke heterogeniteitseffecten het grootst zijn; dat subsidies in Ierland en in innovatiegerichte economieën belangrijk zijn voor bedrijven die innoveren, maar niet voor bedrijven in een overgangseconomie; dat het in evenwicht houden van regionale groei zowel in innovatie- als in transitiegerichte economieën een belangrijke reden voor overheidsinterventie is; en dat overheidsingrijpen in innovatiegerichte economieën en transitiegerichte economieën een positief effect heeft op de productiviteit van een bedrijf, maar als beleidsmakers marktrendement willen optimaliseren ten opzichte van de productiviteit van bedrijven, ze er meestal voor kiezen om te interveniëren in de 'verkeerde' groep bedrijven. ; Empirical Explorations of Firm Innovation, Government Intervention and Firm Performance in European Countries. The broad objectives of the research within this thesis are: firstly, to analyse the process of innovation across innovation types using the firm as a unit of analysis; secondly, to examine the firm innovation-productivity relationship; and thirdly to examine the relationship between government intervention and firm performance in Europe. Some of the key findings from the research indicate that: innovation effort, capital intensity, size, location and the operating environment are key variables explaining a firms' propensity to innovate in Ireland; there is an economic geography effect in the Irish case supporting the urban-hierarchy model, where urbanisation is important for product innovation and less important for process innovations; innovation has a positive effect on the productivity levels of firms across all innovation (product/process) and economy types (innovation/transition driven economies) in European firms; there is a rationale for policy intervention in Europe towards non-innovating firms, depending on where the transitional heterogeneity effects are greatest; subsidies are important for firms innovating in the Irish case and in innovation driven economies, but not for firms in transition economies; a key motivation for government intervention is to balance regional growth both in innovation and transition driven economies; and government intervention in innovation driven economies and transition driven economies has a positive effect on firm productivity, but if policymakers want to maximise market returns with respect to firm productivity, they are choosing to intervene with the 'wrong' group of firms in most cases.
