Furthermore, it analyses the impact of those evaluations on vote choice. Testing three hypotheses, we find that the TV-debate (1.) results in a considerably stronger perception of Steinbrück as a representative of his party, which in turn (2.) has had a positive effect on chancellor preference. This, in the end, (3.) has led to an increased probability to vote for the SPD. Thus, the impact of the TV-debate on a further evaluation dimension of candidate orientations and, consequently, the outcome of the election can be illustrated.
The successful Bavarian smoking-restriction referendum often was viewed as a conflict between smokers and non-smokers. In this paper, we investigate the role of smoking behavior on mobilization and voter choice using data from a rolling-cross-section survey conducted in the run-up to the referendum. The results indicate that smoking behavior did not affect campaign interest and factual knowledge about the proposal. At the same time, non-smokers were more inclined to participate in the referendum than smokers. What is more, vote choice in the referendum was affected strongly by smoking behavior: a large majority of non-smokers voted for the proposal, whereas a large majority of smokers voted against it. Given the polarization in vote choice and non-smokers' reluctance to vote against the anti- smoking proposal, attempts to revise the decision on anti-smoking policy are unlikely to succeed. Accordingly, the referendum appears to have settled the conflict on anti-smoking policy in Bavaria. Adapted from the source document.
Building on the affective intelligence model, this paper addresses the role of anxiety caused by the economic crisis in affecting political information-processing. Utilizing data from a survey of a random sample from the German electorate, the analysis demonstrates that anxiety affected neither interest in politics nor interest in the campaign. Moreover, anxiety did not exhibit sizeable effects on media reception, political talks, & campaign reception. Anxiety conditioned the determinants of vote choice, however. High levels of anxiety caused by the crisis decreased the impact of party identification on vote choice while increasing the influence of issue attitudes. The paper concludes by summarizing key findings & discussing implications. Adapted from the source document.
; Most empirical studies of voting behavior explain vote choice at German federal elections using individual level variables referring on established theories of voting behavior (Columbia School, Cleavage Theory, Michigan School, .). Only a few analyze in addition to them specific effects of the geographical context that surrounds the voters. On top of that these studies produce contradictory results, e.g. about how much of the total variance can be explained by contextual factors. That is why this study seeks to analyze if the social composition of the geographical context of voters had a particular effect on their vote choice in addition to their most important individual characteristics at the German federal election 2009. For that purpose first of all a geographical multilevel-model of vote choice is generated that explains contextual effects among other mechanisms by social interactions among the voters inside the contextual units controlling for the most important individual level factors mentioned by the theories above (party identification, candidate-, issue-orientation, social group membership). Using data of the German Longitudinal Election Study logistic multilevel-models for West- and for the first time for East-Germany and Germany are estimated. Equally for the first time electoral districts are analyzed as the relevant units of the context level. The results show that a small part of the variance of individual vote choice can be explained particularly by characteristics of the electoral districts. Not only direct context effects but also cross-level- interactions can be found. But their strength of influence differs as well between the analyzed regions as between the analyzed parties.
; For the societal demand a deeper integration of environmental preferences within the agri-environmental policy is expected. Therefore, the research challenge is to supply more detailed information on voter preferences used as recommendations for public policy adjustments. Stated Choice Experiments (SCEs) are a suitable method as they are economically based and able to reveal preferences for complex multi-attributed environmental goods. According to state-of-the-art literature, there has not been an explanation of societal preferences in terms of political-economical theory based on empirical results of SCEs yet. However, this field of research has an important meaning for scientific political recommendations as revealed preferences through SCEs may lead to different conclusions. This thesis shows the enormous potential of SCEs to explain societal preferences. But it also shows that these preferences are highly dependent on the design of SCEs, the modeling of gained data, the assumption of voter preferences and the concluded political-economical plausibility. Additionally, it was possible to show what kind of revealed preferences should be used for scientific political recommendations.

AbstractResearch on electoral choices of citizens with migration background has remained largely descriptive. What is missing is a systematic test of theories that can explain individuals with migration background's voting behavior. This article provides such a test on the basis of a post‐electoral survey from the 2011 Swiss general election. It is the first study on the electoral behavior of the first and second generation in Switzerland. And it shows that specific migration background impacts considerably on vote choice. In particular, individuals with migration background belonging to outgroups have a higher propensity to vote for the Left than natives. This relationship is partly explained by the party identifications adopted by the citizens with migration background belonging to outgroups.
Demographic change is one of the biggest challenges with regard to social and economic developments in Germany. The public debate mainly focuses on negative effects for social security systems. However, analyzing potential results of an ageing population for political attitudes and political behavior of the citizenry does not play a major role in scientific research so far. Based on a recent survey this article first examines age-specific differences in individual political attitudes. Second, we analyze possible determinants of age-specific party vote choice. We find age-specific attitudes, which -- at least in part -- do have an impact on party choice. Adapted from the source document.
AbstractIn many advanced democracies, mainstream political parties have been disrupted either by the rise of new (populist) parties or by hostile takeovers. In this article we argue that immigration attitudes have had a powerful impact on the strategic environment of political parties and leaders. We show, based on evidence from a comparative study conducted by YouGov in spring of 2015, that immigration attitudes had, by that time, driven a wedge between mainstream parties – those that regularly play a role in government – and their partisans. This 'immigration gap' opened up enormous space for new political movements to form, either inside existing parties or outside. Furthermore, we show that the representation gap on immigration issues is a relevant predictor of vote choice, so that parties are particularly likely to lose votes when they are more distant from their supporters on immigration.
; In the article it is shown how party images – mental representations of political parties – can be incorporated into a model of the vote decision. Empirically, measurement instruments for the images of German parties are formulated and analyzed. Firstly, our empirical findings reveal marked differences between the parties; we also find indications for large fluctuations of image values over time which is what one would theoretically expect. Secondly, party images in Germany still depend on which social groups citizens belong to, in particular when it comes to the small parties. Thirdly, party images have an important effect on the vote choice, even if party identification is taken into account. Fourthly, party images are especially relevant for party choice in the group of politically independents and in the group of citizens with low political involvement.
This article investigates the moderating effect of social context on the relationship between religion and vote choice. Whereas theories of electoral research and the sociology of religion assume a linear contextual effect, we develop a new theoretical argument that predicts a non-linear effect. The results of logistic multilevel analyses confirm this theory for the Catholic milieu: The effect of catholic denomination on voting for the Christian Democrats (CDU/CSU) first increases with the share of Catholics in the context and decreases when they are in the clear majority. This finding - which contradicts former studies - holds for all federal elections under consideration (1994-2009), withstands several robustness tests and provides important evidence for the perpetuation of the traditional Catholic voting norm through group processes. Voters can use sub-national elections to punish or reward the federal government. This can be analyzed by looking at their evaluation of the federal government. Here, it is argued that it is easier for voters to assign responsibility if the same parties hold office on both the federal and state level. It is more difficult to assign responsibility if these governments are composed of different parties. Based on survey data for state elections in Berlin (1979 to 2001), it can be shown that the federal arena only influences the sub-national arena if the same parties hold both governments. However, the size of this effect is small when contrasted to other individual vote-choice determinates like party and candidate preferences at the state level. (Zeitschrift für Parlamentsfragen / FUB)
