Since change of in the economy has its first impact on people in the labor force, commercial and occupational classes are delineated by status in the labor force and respondents' own occupation. Cohort and period effects are identified for the impact of occupational classes (manual workers, white collar employees, self-employed, not in the labor force) and union membership on SPD-vote. The hypothesis that unionized workers stay stable SPD-affiliates across generations is falsified, but in each generation the gap towards non-unionized workers remains the same. As expected, white collar employees adjust their voting behavior to that of manual workers and, if they are unionized, to that of unionized manual workers. A cohort analysis for commercial classes shows that the political adjustment of white-collar employees to manual workers is mainly due to routine non-manual administrative, sales and service workers. Social movements are defined as population groups with which people identify without the necessity of becoming a member of a formal organization; the collective experience is derived from common political goals and from collective behavior. Adherents of the anti-nuclear, peace and feminist movements are identified with survey questions of a three-wave electoral study of 1987 which allows the application of Rasch scaling to construct movement affiliation. The measures for the three movements predict the strength of support for the respective movements' goals quite well, especially well if mobilization was high as for the anti-nuclear movement at that time. Movement organization is measured by types of ego-centric networks of supporters of the anti-nuclear movement. A distinction is made between strong and weak ties, the latter ones identified by relationships to adherents of the anti-nuclear movement beyond the people with whom one discusses important matters most frequently. Only these latter ties are good predictors for participation in demonstrations. By contrast, vote intentions for Greens or SPD vs. CDU or FDP depend on strong ties, that is the presence of movement supporters among one's frequent discussants: The more are present the stronger one's own affiliation which influences vote intention. ; Wiederabdruck von: Pappi, Franz Urban. 1990. Academic research on voting behavior in ethnically divided societies focused predominantly on ethnic voting. Economic voting, as a performance based voting, is rather scarce to find in these electoral contexts. It is investigated in more advanced democracies, where voting behavior is rather evaluative in nature than expressive, meaning that ethnicity is rather irrelevant or ethnic differences are non-existent. This thesis contributes to a better understanding of factors which have an impact on voting behavior in societies with ethnic divisions by asking how influential is unemployment on voting outcomes and if voters evaluate economic performance of the government when casting a vote. It also links ethnic voting to the phenomenon of political patronage, reflecting its negative impact on political accountability, per se. To provide empirical evidence, this cumulative dissertation centers mainly on the case of Bosnia and Herzegovina, whereas one study looks at 44 countries.

Die gegenwärtige Transformationsforschung zu demokratischen politischen Regimen zeichnet sich durch einen Gegensatz zwischen den traditionellen Modernisierungs- und Strukturtheorien einerseits und den Akteurs- und Prozeßanalysen andererseits aus. Um diesen Gegensatz zu überwinden, wird im vorliegenden Beitrag ein theoretischer Rahmen entwickelt, mit dessen Hilfe die beiden Ansätze integriert werden können. Der Autor betrachtet die Entstehung und Stabilisierung von demokratischen Regimen aus einer akteurtheoretischen Perspektive, wobei die Mobilisierung und Organisierung von Bevölkerungssegmenten zu organisierten kollektiven Akteuren im Rahmen ihrer jeweiligen politischen Interessen im Mittelpunkt stehen. Die Eliteninteressen und -strategien werden in ihrem Verhältnis zu den jeweils relevanten Bevölkerungsgruppen untersucht und an einem empirischen Beispiel über das Abstimmungsverhalten von Abgeordneten im preussischen Abgeordnetenhaus anlässlich einer Abstimmung über die Einführung des allgemeinen, gleichen Wahlrechts in Preußen im Jahre 1918 verdeutlicht. Es wird vor allem danach gefragt, welchen demokratisierenden Gehalt eine derartige Wahlrechtsänderung gehabt hätte und ob die den einzelnen Bevölkerungssegmenten zugeschriebenen sozial konstruierten Interessen das Abstimmungsverhalten der Abgeordneten erklären können. ; Contemporary attempts to explain the development and consolidation of democratic regimes can be divided into elite- and actor-centered perspectives on the one hand and modernization- and structural theories on the other hand. The article develops a theoretical perspective that links elite action to social structures. Elites are regarded as representatives of the interests of certain population segments, though they have some latitude in the definition of these interests and the pursuit of their own interests. The development and consolidation of democratic regimes therefore depends on the interests and power resources of specific elites and of the population segments they represent. In a study on Prussian deputies' voting behavior on the reform of the Prussian three-class franchise it can be shown that the theoretical framework improves the explanation of elite actions and of the development of an elite consensus on democratic norms.

A normal vote is a hypothetical election result following exclusively from predispositions of voters towards political parties which result from long-term or middle-term influences. The influence of short-term factors like attractive candidates or issues from the recent campaign has to be eliminated within the abstract model. As an operationalization for German Bundestag elections for this purpose the average vote intentions of population groups are used which are part of the politicized German social structures such as Catholics, especially when they attend church frequently, or employees (Arbeitnehmer) and union members who have formed enduring coalitions with a political party. This operationalization is compared with a model originally developed for the United States. According to this model, the long-term factor is measured by party identification. All Bundestag elections of the Kohl era are analyzed, for which the Politbarometer surveys of the Forschungsgruppe Wahlen, Mannheim, immediately before the Bundestag elections are used as a data basis. The vote intentions which can be derived from the politicized social structure are shown to be a stabile basis for a German normal vote so that it makes sense to compute normal vote results from 1983 to 1998.

This article is based on the empirical reconstruction of individual voting behavior of a whole community in midnineteenth century Wurttemberg. The central question is, whether before the Revolution of 1848 liberalism succeeded in dissolving the local structures of the notabilities' system and whether voting behavior tended towards strict partisan decision-making. The empirical results show that - although liberalism became more popular and got an enormous amount of votes in community council elections - individual voting, in important aspects, still followed the classical patterns of a Weberian notabilities' system. Voters preferred candidates of wealth and education who were experienced in local administration. Until 1848 there was no group that voted strictly and exclusively liberal - not even the organised liberals themselves. Der vorliegende Beitrag resümiert die Ergebinsse einer Studie, die die ständige Rückbeziehung regionaler Wahlerergebnisse und Wahlkampfbefunde auf die nationale Ebene anstrebt. Indem die Gesamtentwicklung der Parteien im Medium der Wahlergebnisse im Vordergrund steht, wird das Spektrum der jeweiligen Gegenparteien mitberücksichtigt. Der Beitrag versucht insgesamt eine Verbindung von politischer Geschichte und Sozialgeschichte an dem Überschneidungsbereich 'Wahlen' zu verdeutlichen. ; Research on the field of electoral history has never had a considerable impact on the historiography of the 19th century. Accordingly, the essay pleads for a historical investigation into political movements, making use of the theory of political mobilization as it was developed by Stein Rokkan. Considering the relations between Social Democrats, Catholics, Conservatives, Liberals, and national minority groups as they emerge from election campaigns, polls and election results, it tries to follow some of the main developments of German party history in the 19th century. The survey shows that, towards the end of the 19th century, the Social Democratic Party has virtually exhausted its reservoir of voters. Though the election campaigns aim at mobilizing broader strata of the population, they do not succeed in significantly changing the parliamentary majority in favour of the political left. In spite of social change and new social stratifications the Social Democrats, like all of the major political parties, remain dependent on a fixed clientele of voters. As a result, all of the political parties tend to stabilize their forms of organisation and strategy and thus, even at the close of the 19th century, prefigure the political immobility which was to be one of the characteristic impediments of the Weimar Republic and finally contributed to the failure of the first German democracy.

Trotz relativ großer Stammwählerschaften verbuchten CDU/ CSU und SPD bei der Bundestagswahl 2017 starke Verluste, weil sich viel mehr frühere Wähler und Wählerinnen abwandten als neue hinzukamen. Vor allem Beschäftigte mit Tätigkeiten mittlerer Qualifikation sowie Personen im Ruhestand kehrten ihnen den Rücken. Das zeigen Auswertungen des Sozio-oekonomischen Panels. Von den Abwanderungen von den Unionsparteien konnten vor allem die FDP aber auch die AfD profitieren, von der Schwäche der SPD alle Parteien im Bundestag, also Union, Grüne, Linke, FDP und AfD. Letztere konnte zudem viele vorherige Nichtwähler und Nichtwählerinnen gewinnen. Die Wählerschaften von Union und SPD ähneln stark der sozialen Zusammensetzung aller Wahlberechtigten, weshalb sie als Volksparteien gelten können. Dieser Parteitypus war zuletzt offenkundig immer weniger erfolgreich, denn die Parteienlandschaft wurde vielfältiger. Auf der einen Seite haben sich die Grünen etabliert, die vor allem höher qualifizierte Beschäftigte eher in Westdeutschland ansprechen. Hier macht ihnen vermehrt die Linke Konkurrenz. Auf der anderen Seite findet sich die AfD, die insbesondere die im Erwerbsleben stehenden 'kleinen Leute' erreicht, die eher auf Distanz zu den etablierten Parteien gehen.

Spätestens seit dem letztjährigen Auftritt von Conchita Wurst mit ihrem provokanten Mix aus männlichen und weiblichen Zügen hat der Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in ganz Europa Aufmerksamkeit erregt. Neben der großen öffentlichen Teilnahme existieren aber auch eine ganze Reihe wissenschaftlicher Untersuchungen zu möglichen Einflussfaktoren der Punktevergabe beim ESC. Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, auf Grundlage einer eigenen empirischen Datenerhebung verschiedene Faktoren hinsichtlich ihres Einflusses auf die Bewertung der Auftritte beim ESC zu untersuchen. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Frage, ob es systematische Einflüsse gibt, die die Chancen eines Songs Punkte zu erhalten, beeinflussen. Dazu werden alle Teilnehmerländer für den relevanten Zeitraum der Jahre 1999 bis 2014 betrachtet. Im Mittelpunkt stehen drei Hypothesen zum Einfluss (1) des Startplatzes, (2) der Songsprache und (3) eines möglichen Blockvoting. Die Ergebnisse der vorliegenden Untersuchung zeigen, dass der Startplatz den deutlichsten Einfluss auf die Bewertung hat. Das heißt, je später der ESC-Auftritt stattfindet, desto besser wird er bewertet. To what extent the sex of the artist, the language of the song or political preferences and geographical proximity impact aggregate voting behavior and thus the odds of winning the contest? This paper bases on the voting-data from 1999 to 2014 and investigates three hypotheses, i.e. the impacts of (1) the serial position of a performance, (2) the language of the song and (3) the existence of voting blocs. By analyzing a sample of the aggregate points of 394 songs this study shows that ordering effects when judging the songs are at hand: Participants that perform later receive more points on average. There is no - or at least only very weak - evidence for voting bias on the basis of geography and political voting blocs or linguistic preferences. This outcome strikingly contradicts a lot of other empirical studies as to voting patterns in the ESC. Two explanations are put forward: First, the voting behavior is an endogenous variable. If it is well known that a country receives votes due to political preferences and not because of the quality of its song the other countries anticipate this and tend to give less points. Thus at the aggregate level 'logrolling' of points inside voting blocs are cancelled out. Second, a closer look at the literature reveals that a lot of empirical studies identify voting blocs, but these voting blocs are almost always different groups of various countries. Summing up, it emerges that there are very few stable patterns of voting behavior, probably due to dynamic changes of political, cultural and social preferences. Therefore the evidence backs the idea that the quality of a song or at least the popularity of a performance dominate the success. This is certainly a favourable outcome given the goal of a fair and impartial song contest.

A conceptual framework describing politicized social structures (coalitions of important societal groups with political parties) is developed, starting from the distinction of class and status politics. This distinction is generalized to cleavages based on associative vs. communal social relationships. The first is exemplified by class, and the latter by religious conflicts within West German society. Both are distinguished from pure interest-driven voting behavior without associative or communal relationships.

Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit den politischen Folgen von befristeter Beschäftigung. Konkret wird untersucht, ob, bzw. inwiefern durch befristete Beschäftigung wohlfahrtsstaatliche Präferenzen und Wahlverhalten bei der Bundestagswahl 2017 beeinflusst wurden. Um der Fragestellung nachgehen zu können, werden theoretische Überlegungen zu Einstellungen und Verhaltensweisen von befristet Beschäftigten in den sozialpsychologischen Ansatz zur Erklärung des Wahlverhaltens integriert. Die empirische Analyse erfolgt mit Hilfe des kumulierten Vorwahl-/Nachwahl-Datensatzes der GLES zur Bundestagswahl 2017 und zeigt, dass weder in Ost-, noch in Westdeutschland ein signifikanter Effekt auf das Wahlverhalten ausging. Zudem war auch der Einfluss auf Einstellungen zum Wohlfahrtsstaat eher gering. ; This paper deals with the political consequences of temporary employment. Specifically, it examines whether temporary employment influenced welfare state preferences and voting behavior in the 2017 German federal election. In order to investigate the research questions, theoretical considerations regarding the behavior of temporary employees are integrated into the Michigan Model. The empirical analysis is based on the cumulative pre-election/post-election data set of the German Longitudinal Election Study and shows that neither in East nor West Germany a significant effect on voting behaviour took place. Social cleavages are defined as coalitions of large societal groups which are themselves organized in interest groups and other organizations with certain political parties. Overcoming the macro analysis of Lipset and Rokkan, value orientations are analyzed as micro mechanisms connecting social structural positions and voting behavior. By replicating survey questions in 1976 which were first asked in a 1953 survey, changes of in the relation between certain social structural positons and voting over time are documented. A major result is that the political re-orientation of the new middle class towards the Social Democrats was less driven driven less by left economic attitudes than by increasing liberal attitudes towards marriage and family which are were propagated by the SPD. ; Wiederabdruck von: Pappi, Franz Urban. 1977. In order to be successful, both bids require support from at least two-thirds of their population in the IOC public opinion poll. In addition, the IOC would need to consider Hamburg large enough.

Der Aufsatz berichtet über eine Untersuchung der Frage, in welchem Zusammenhang die Wählerrekrutierung der NSDAP mit dem Wahlverhalten vor 1918 steht und stellt sich dem Problem, welche Rolle den politischen Traditionen in Erklärungsansätzen des Aufstiegs der nationalsozialistischen Bewegung zukommt. Der empirische Vergleich der Wahlergebnisse zwischen 1924 und 1932 mit denen im Kaiserreich zeigt, daß die NSDAP in erster Linie eine sozialstrukturell definierte Partei war. Für die Erfolge der Nationalsozialisten spielte die regionalspezifische Tradition, also ob eher liberal oder konservativ, keine entscheidende Rolle. Die regionale Streuung der NSDAP-Anteile geht vielmehr fast ausschließlich auf das Konto der Konfessionsverteilung und des Urbanisierungsgrades. Die Befunde widersprechen der Auffassung, die NSDAP habe die Liberalen beerbt. ; A virtual consensus prevailed over many decades that the Nazi constituency were overwhelmingly middle class. Postwar analysts explained the origins of Hitler's political breakthrough in terms of a radicalisation of the liberal milieu. During the last decades, however, it has become increasingly apparent that the National Socialist constituency at the end of Weimar was far more diverse than hitherto believed. However, no one doubts that the NSDAP owes its electoral success to the liberal voting tradition before 1914. In this article, I examine the electoral strength of National Socialism as a function of the social structure and the voting behaviour in the Kaiserreich. The empirical analysis shows that we are only in a slightly better position to forecast the Nazi Party's regional electoral performance if we know not only the social composition of the regional electorate but its voting traditions.
