German Judaism experienced an extraordinary phase of development and diversification between 1870 and 1933. Berlin became a hub for emigration and immigration, and important trends, such as Reform Judaism, were disseminated from there throughout the world. This volume assembles essays about this phenomenon by prominent authors, among them Atina Grossman, Michael A. Meyer, Shulamit Volkov, and Liliane Weissberg.

In: Brill's companions in classical studies. Warfare in the ancient Mediterranean world volume 2
"In Brill's Companion to Military Defeat in Ancient Mediterranean Society, Jessica H. Clark and Brian Turner lead a re-examination of how Near Eastern, Greek, and Roman societies addressed - or failed to address - their military defeats and casualties of war. Original case studies illuminate not only how political and military leaders managed the political and strategic consequences of military defeats, but also the challenges facing defeated soldiers, citizens, and other classes, who were left to negotiate the meaning of defeat for themselves and their societies. By focusing on the connections between war and society, history and memory, the chapters collected in this volume contribute to our understanding of the ubiquity and significance of war losses in the ancient world. Contributors are: Craig Caldwell, Jessica H. Clark, Sviatoslav Dmitriev, Edith Foster, Max Goldman, John Hyland, Paul Johstono, Sarah Melville, Ida Östenberg, Amy Richlin, Nathan Rosenstein, Jeffrey Rop, Matthew Trundle, Brian Turner, Graeme A. America's polarized politics are largely disconnected from mainstream public preferences. This disconnect poses fundamental dangers for the representativeness and accountability of government, as well as the already withering public trust in it. As the 2008 presidential race kicks into gear, the political climate certainly will not become less polarized. With important issues to address-including immigration policy, health care, and the funding of the Iraq war-it is critical that essential policies not be hostage to partisan political battles. Building upon the findings of the first volume of R
