WOS: 000435153700003 ; PubMed: 30956553 ; The inclusive and fiducial t (t) over bar production cross sections are measured in the lepton+jets channel using 20.2 fb(-1) of proton proton collision data at a centre-of mass energy of 8 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Major systematic uncertainties due to the modelling of the jet energy scale and b-tagging efficiency are constrained by separating selected events into three disjoint regions. In order to reduce systematic uncertainties in the most important background, the W+jets process is modelled using Z+jets events in a data-driven approach. The inclusive t (t) over bar cross-section is measured with a precision of 5.7% to be (sigma(inc) (t (t) over bar) = 248.3 +/- 0.7 (stat.) +/- 13.4 (syst.) +/- 4.7 (lumi.) pb, assuming a top-quark mass of 172.5 GeV. The result is in agreement with the Standard Model prediction. The cross-section is also measured in a phase space close to that of the selected data. WOS: 000454168500002 ; A search for vectorlike quarks is presented, which targets their decay into a Z boson and a third-generation Standard Model quark. In the case of a vectorlike quark T (B) with charge +2/3e (-1/3e), the decay searched for is T -> Zt (B -> Zb). Data for this analysis were taken during 2015 and 2016 with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb(-1) of pp collisions at root s = 13 TeV. The final state used is characterized by the presence of b-tagged jets, as well as a Z boson with high transverse momentum, which is reconstructed from a pair of opposite-sign same-flavor leptons. Pair and single production of vectorlike quarks are both taken into account and are each searched for using optimized dileptonic exclusive and trileptonic inclusive event selections. In these selections, the high scalar sum of jet transverse momenta, the presence of high-transverse-momentum large-radius jets, as well as-in the case of the single-production selections-the presence of forward jets are used. No significant excess over the background-only hypothesis is found and exclusion limits at 95% confidence level allow masses of vectorlike quarks of m(T) > 1030 GeV (m(T) > 1210 GeV) and m(B) > 1010 GeV (m(B) > 1140 GeV) in the singlet (doublet) model. In the case of 100% branching ratio for T -> Zt (B -> Zb), the limits are m(T) > 1340 GeV (m(B) > 1220 GeV). WOS: 000449295300002 ; A search for pair production of the supersymmetric partners of the Higgs boson (higgsinos (H) over tilde) in gaugemediated scenarios is reported. Each higgsino is assumed to decay to a Higgs boson and a gravitino. Two complementary analyses, targeting high- and low-mass signals, are performed to maximize sensitivity. The two analyses utilize LHC pp collision data at a center-of-mass energy root s = 13 TeV, the former with an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb(-1) and the latter with 24.3 fb(-1), collected with the ATLAS detector in 2015 and 2016. The search is performed in events containing missing transverse momentum and several energetic jets, at least three of which must be identified as b-quark jets. No significant excess is found above the predicted background. Limits on the cross section are set as a function of the mass of the in simplified models assuming production via mass-degenerate higgsinos decaying to a Higgs boson and a gravitino. Higgsinos with masses between 130 and 230 GeV and between 290 and 880 GeV are excluded at the 95% confidence level. WOS: 000438622000007 ; A search for pair production of up-type vector-like quarks (T) with a significant branching ratio into a top quark and either a Standard Model Higgs boson or a Z boson is presented. The same analysis is also used to search for four-top-quark production in several new physics scenarios. The search is based on a dataset of pp collisions at root s = 13TeV recorded in 2015 and 2016 with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb(-1). Data are analysed in the lepton+jets final state, characterised by an isolated electron or muon with high transverse momentum, large missing transverse momentum and multiple jets, as well as the jets+E-T(miss) final state, characterised by multiple jets and large missing transverse momentum. The search exploits the high multiplicity of jets identified as originating from b-quarks, and the presence of boosted, hadronically decaying top quarks and Higgs bosons reconstructed as large-radius jets, characteristic of signal events. No significant excess above the Standard Model expectation is observed, and 95% CL upper limits are set on the production cross sections for the different signal processes considered. These cross-section limits are used to derive lower limits on the mass of a vector-like T quark under several branching ratio hypotheses assuming contributions from T -> Wb, Zt, Ht decays. The 95% CL observed lower limits on the T quark mass range between 0.99TeV and 1.43TeV for all possible values of the branching ratios into the three decay modes considered, significantly extending the reach beyond that of previous searches. WOS: 000433034600002 ; A search is presented for photonic signatures, motivated by generalized models of gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking. This search makes use of proton-proton collision data at root s = 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb(-1) recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC, and it explores models dominated by both strong and electroweak production of supersymmetric partner states. Experimental signatures incorporating an isolated photon and significant missing transverse momentum are explored. These signatures include events with an additional photon or additional jet activity not associated with any specific underlying quark flavor. No significant excess of events is observed above the Standard Model prediction, and 95% confidence-level upper limits of between 0.083 and 0.32 fb are set on the visible cross section of contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model. WOS: 000437348900002 ; The results of a search for the direct pair production of top squarks, the supersymmetric partner of the top quark, in final states with one isolated electron or muon, several energetic jets, and missing transverse momentum are reported. The analysis also targets spin-0 mediator models, where the mediator decays into a pair of dark-matter particles and is produced in association with a pair of top quarks. The search uses data from proton-proton collisions delivered by the Large Hadron Collider in 2015 and 2016 at a centre-of-mass energy of root s = 13TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 fb(-1). A wide range of signal scenarios with different mass-splittings between the top squark, the lightest neutralino and possible intermediate supersymmetric particles are considered, including cases where the W bosons or the top quarks produced in the decay chain are off-shell. No significant excess over the Standard Model prediction is observed. The null results are used to set exclusion limits at 95% confidence level in several supersymmetry benchmark models. For pair-produced top-squarks decaying into top quarks, top-squark masses up to 940 GeV are excluded. Stringent exclusion limits are also derived for all other considered top-squark decay scenarios. The article is devoted to the study of the needs and demands of students of the modern institutions of higher education in Ukraine and their understanding of the importance of higher education in the development of their lives. The research was conducted in three institutions of higher education of Ukraine. It was attended by 300 students of the first-third year of study. On the basis of analysis of questionnaires, interviews and the included observation, it was found that for a modern student, higher education has no unambiguous meaning. The study made it possible to point out that its traditional combination with the prospect of appropriate employment, career development and the achievement of well-being is likely to be an educational myth rather than the real situation. A modern student, regardless of the type of institution of higher education, sees for himself both the benefits of higher education and the many expenses that limit his/her motivation to achieve it. Higher education, as a vital necessity in the modern world, remains in the field of tradition, the carriers of which is the older generation, which mainly takes on the support of children at the stage of its acquisition. In the absence of such support, the desire to acquire knowledge at the level of higher education has significant risks, reducing the likelihood of young people choosing the path of personal development through the acquisition of higher education. For students, the process of obtaining higher education is combined with a new stage in their life, where communication, establishment of new contacts and acquisition of vital competencies are crucial, and only in combination with them, it acquires a certain personal and social meaning. Higher education is regarded by the student as an attribute of the present, and its achievement requires concentration of own efforts and additional expenses. Our studies confirm the data from other studies on the difficulty of youth in mastering the new educational space related to its territory, their relations with teachers and students. It is found that a modern student sees a perspective direction in improving the quality of education not by choosing from the alternatives offered, but through counselling, discussion and democratization of the process of managing a higher education institution. The study leads to the idea that there is a need to move from monosubjective pedagogy to a dialog, which should first of all be taken into account in the management system of a higher education institution. The presented study reveals new perspectives of assessing the place and role of higher education in the modern world from the position of the student. ; Стаття присвячена вивченню потреб та запитів студентів сучасного закладу вищої освіти України та розуміння ними значення вищої освіти у розбудові їхнього життя. Дослідження проводилося в трьох закладах вищої освіти України. В ньому взяли участь 300 студентів першого-третього року навчання. Сучасний студент, незалежно від типу закладу вищої освіти, вбачає для себе як переваги щодо здобуття вищої освіти, так і багато витрат, які обмежують його мотивацію щодо її досягнення. Вища освіта, як життєва необхідність в сучасному світі, залишається в полі традиційності, носіями якої є старше покоління, яке переважно бере на себе підтримку дітей на етапі її здобуття. За відсутності такої підтримки прагнення до опанування знаннями на рівні вищої освіти мають суттєві ризики, знижуючи ймовірність вибору молоддю шляху особистісного розвитку засобом опанування вищою освітою. Для студентів процес здобуття вищої освіти поєднується із новим етапом їхнього життя, де спілкування, налагодження нових контактів, опанування життєвими компетентностями є визначальними і лише у поєднанні з ними вона набуває певного особистісного і соціального сенсу. Вища освіта розглядається студентом як атрибут сучасності і її надбання вимагає концентрації власних зусиль та додаткових витрат. Дослідження підтверджуються дані інших досліджень щодо труднощів молоді в опануванні новим освітнім простором, що стосується його території, стосунків із викладачами та студентами. WOS: 000398956200005 ; PubMed: 28579919 ; This paper describes the algorithms for the reconstruction and identification of electrons in the central region of the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). These algorithms were used for all ATLAS results with electrons in the final state that are based on the 2012 pp collision data produced by the LHC at root s = 8 TeV. The efficiency of these algorithms, together with the charge misidentification rate, is measured in data and evaluated in simulated samples using electrons from Z -> ee, Z -> ee gamma and J/Psi -> ee decays. For these efficiency measurements, the full recorded data set, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb(-1), is used. Based on a new reconstruction algorithm used in 2012, the electron reconstruction efficiency is 97% for electrons with E-T = 15 GeV and 99% at E-T = 50 GeV. WOS: 000418364300002 ; PubMed: 31985738 ; Measurements of transverse energy-energy correlations and their associated asymmetries in multi-jet events using the ATLAS detector at the LHC are presented. The data used correspond to vs = 8 TeV proton-proton collisions with an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb(-1). The results are presented in bins of the scalar sum of the transverse momenta of the two leading jets, unfolded to the particle level and compared to the predictions from Monte Carlo simulations. A comparison with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD is also performed, showing excellent agreement within the uncertainties. From this comparison, the value of the strong coupling constant is extracted for different energy regimes, thus testing the running of alpha(s)(mu) predicted in QCD up to scales over 1 TeV. They use 20.2 fb(-1) of data collected by the ATLAS experiment in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV at the LHC. Total, fiducial and differential cross-sections are measured for both top-quark and top-antiquark production. The fiducial cross-section is measured with a precision of 5.8% (top quark) and 7.8% (top antiquark), respectively. The total cross-sections are measured to be stot(tq) = 56.7(-3.8)(+4.3) pb for top-quark production and sigma(tot)((t) over barq) = 32.9(-2.7)(+3.0) pb for top-antiquark production, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction. In addition, the ratio of top-quark to top-antiquark production cross-sections is determined to be R-t = 1.72 +/- 0.09. The differential cross-sections as a function of the transverse momentum and rapidity of both the top quark and the top antiquark are measured at both the parton and particle levels. The transverse momentum and rapidity differential cross-sections of the accompanying jet from the t-channel scattering are measured at particle level. Jets are reconstructed from energy deposits forming topological clusters of calorimeter cells, using the anti-k(t) algorithm with radius parameter R = 0.4. Jets are calibrated with a series of simulation-based corrections and in situ techniques. In situ techniques exploit the transverse momentum balance between a jet and a reference object such as a photon, Z boson, or multijet system for jets with 20 0.8) is derived from dijet p(T) balance measurements. WOS: 000402676500001 ; Measurements of the production cross section of a Z boson in association with jets in proton-proton collisions at root s = 13TeV are presented, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.16 fb(-1) collected by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider in 2015. Inclusive and differential cross sections are measured for events containing a Z boson decaying to electrons or muons and produced in association with up to seven jets with p(T) > 30GeV and vertical bar y vertical bar < 2.5. Predictions from different Monte Carlo generators based on leading-order and nextto-leading-order matrix elements for up to two additional partons interfaced with parton shower and fixed-order predictions at next-to-leading order and next-to-next-to-leading order are compared with the measured cross sections. The differential cross-section, assuming unpolarised J/psi production, is measured as a function of the transverse momentum of the lower-p(T) J/psi meson, di-J/psi p(T) and mass, the difference in rapidity between the two J/psi mesons, and the azimuthal angle between the two J/psi mesons. The fraction of prompt pair events due to double parton scattering is determined by studying kinematic correlations between the two J/psi mesons. The total and double parton scattering cross-sections are compared with predictions. In den Jahren 1945 bis 1954, vom Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs bis zum Scheitern der Europäischen Verteidigungsgemeinschaft, bildeten sich in Westeuropa zahlreiche politische Zusammenhänge heraus, die auf eine Einigung des Kontinents auf kooperativer oder supranationaler Grundlage hinarbeiteten. Hierzu zählen die europäischen Einigungsverbände der Union Européenne des Fédéralistes, der christdemokratischen Nouvelles Equipes Inteernationales und der überparteilichen Dachorganisation der Europaverbände Mouvement Européen, die Kooperationsorgane des Verteidigungsbündnisses des Brüsseler Pakts und die Beratende Versammlung des Europarats. All diese Zusammenhänge beschäftigten sich intensiv mit einer besonderen Herausforderung europäischer Einigungspolitik: dem "deutschen Problem". Auch wenn die Anfänge der europäischen Integration im ersten Nachkriegsjahrzehnt in zahlreichen geschichtswissenschaftlichen Arbeiten ausgiebig untersucht worden sind, hat dieses "deutsche Problem" als Thema und Faktor der Einigungsdiskussion kaum eine nähere Betrachtung erfahren. Das lässt sich nicht zuletzt daran ablesen lässt, dass in der Forschung fast ausschließlich von der "deutschen Frage" als Motiv der europäischen Integration die Rede ist, während die Zeitgenossen vom "deutschen Problem" sprachen. Dieser semantische Unterschied spiegelt auch einen Bedeutungsunterschied wider: Die "deutsche Frage" zielte auf die staatsförmige Gestalt der deutschen Nation ab und stellte sich vorrangig den Deutschen selbst, während das "deutsche Problem" in erster Linie die Europäer und die Möglichkeit ihres friedlichen Zusammenlebens mit dem deutschen Nachbarn betraf. Aus zeitgenössischer Perspektive war das "deutsche Problem" insofern ein drängendes europäisches Problem und bedurfte einer Lösung durch die europäische Einigung. Anhand der genannten Verbände und Institutionen, deren Funktion in der ersten Phase der europäischen Integration vor allem darin zu sehen ist, dass sie Foren der Diskussion über die Möglichkeit, die Notwendigkeit und die Gestalt eines geeinten Europas darstellten, lässt sich die Bedeutung des "deutschen Problems" als gemeineuropäische Herausforderung deutlich nachvollziehen. Denn der Beginn der Einigungsdiskussion in all diesen Foren stand mit dem "deutschen Problem" in Zusammenhang. Die UEF bildeten mit ihrer Gründung im Jahr 1946 eine ständige Deutschlandkommission, die NEI veranstalteten Anfang 1948 eine Konferenz über "Le problème allemand", und das ME wurde infolge des Haager Europakongresses vom Mai 1948 gegründet, auf dem die Debatten über die Zukunft Deutschlands in Europa breiten Raum einnahmen und ebenfalls zur Gründung einer Deutschlandkommission führten. Der Brüsseler Pakt hatte zum erklärten Ziel, eine erneut aggressive Politik Deutschlands zu unterbinden und widmete sich dieser Aufgabe nicht zuletzt durch seinen Beschluss der Gründung des Europarats, um dem wiederentstehenden westdeutschen Staat eine europäische Perspektive zu vermitteln. Der Europarat stand daher mit dem "deutschen Problem" in einem konstitutiven Zusammenhang, und in jeder Sitzungsperiode seiner Beratenden Versammlung trat dieser Zusammenhang auch in den Diskussionen zutage. Dabei wurde nicht, wie etwa in den Einigungsverbänden, das "deutsche Problem" in speziellen Kommissionen oder als eigenes Thema behandelt, es affizierte vielmehr die grundsätzlichen Diskussionen über die Fort- und Zielsetzung europäischer Einigungspolitik. Die Erwägung einer ökonomischen Integration hatte das als überlegen erachtete deutsche Potential an Rohstoffen und industriellen Produktionskapazitäten zum zentralen Thema. Die Debatten über eine europäische Armee zielten auf die Verhinderung einer nationalen deutschen Armee. Die Überlegungen zur politischen Einigung des Kontinents kreisten um das Risiko eines angenommenen nationalistischen Rückfalls der Deutschen. Zudem beschäftigten sich die verschiedenen Foren der europäischen Einigungsdiskussion ausgiebig mit spezifisch deutschen Problemen wie Territorialdisputen, der deutschen Jugend oder den deutschen Vertriebenen und Flüchtlingen. Aber auch diese Probleme wurden bloß als Ausprägungen des grundsätzlichen "deutschen Problems", als Hinweise auf den wiedererwachenden Nationalismus, die Demokratieunfähigkeit oder die Reorientierung der Deutschen nach Osten, somit als europäische Probleme verstanden. Aus Sicht der europäischen Einigungsdiskussion bestand das "deutsche Problem" so lange, wie die deutschen Probleme nicht in eine europäische Lösungsstrategie eingebettet waren. Dieses Verständnis einer Abhängigkeit Europas von Deutschland ließ das "deutsche Problem" als ein europäisches Problem, die Zukunft Europas als untrennbar mit der Zukunft Deutschlands verbunden erscheinen. Die europäische Integration war insofern konzipiert als Einigung Europas sowohl mit als auch gegen Deutschland. ; During the period between 1945 and 1954, from the end of the Second World War until the failure of the European Defense Community, several political associations were formed in Western Europe working towards a unification of the continent on a cooperative or integrative basis. Among those associations were the unification movements Union Européenne des Fédéralistes, the Christian-Democratic Nouvelles Equipes Inteernationales, and the Mouvement Européen as a non-party umbrella organization of the unifications movements, the collaborative bodies of the defense alliance Brussels Treaty Organization and the Consultative Assembly of the Council of Europe. This difference in semantics also reflects a difference in meaning: The "German question" pointed at the German nation-state and was raised mostly by the Germans themselves, while the "German problem" first and foremost concerned Europeans and the possibility of their peaceful cohabitation with the German neighbor. From the contemporary perspective, the "German problem" was a pestering European problem and required a solution be means of European unification. On the basis of the abovementioned movements and institutions, whose role during the first phase of European integration can be understood primarily as constituting forums of discussion on the necessity, possibility and shape of a united Europe, the significance of the "German problem" as a European challenge can be clearly retraced. The origins of discussions on European unification were connected to the "German problem" in all of those forums. Right after their foundation, in 1946, the UEF formed a commission on Germany, in early 1948 the NEI organized a conference on "Le problème allemande", and the ME was founded after the The Hague Congress of Europe from May 1948, during which the debates on the future of Germany were extensive and resulted in the establishment of another commission on Germany. The Brussels Treaty Organization had the declared goal of preventing a renewed German policy of aggression and consecrated its work to this end, not least through its decision to form the Council of Europe to deliver a European perspective for the reemerging West German state. The Council of Europe, therefore, had a constitutive connection to the "German problem", and during every of its Consultative Assembly's yearly sessions this connection manifested itself in the debates. The "German problem" was not dealt with in specially assigned commissions or as a separate subject as it was in the unification movements, it rather affected the fundamental discussions on the development and goals of European unification policy. The contemplation of economic integration focused on a German potential of raw materials and manufacturing capacities, regarded as superior. The debates on a European army aimed at the prevention of a national German army. The deliberations on the political unification of the continent revolved around an assumed nationalist relapse of the Germans. Additionally, the different forums of discussion on European unification dealt with specific German problems like territorial disputes, the German youth or the German expellees and refugees. But, those problems were also understood as characteristics of the fundamental "German problem", as hints of a reawakening nationalism, the democratic inabilities and the reorientation of the Germans towards the east, therefore as European problems. From the perspective of the discussion on European unification, the "German problem" persisted as long as the German problems were not resolved within a European framework. This understanding of a European dependency from Germany let the "German problem" appear as a European problem, and the future of Europe as inextricably bound to the future of Germany. European integration therefore meant the unification of Europe with as well as against Germany.

WOS: 000409355300002 ; PubMed: 32011613 ; The rejection of forward jets originating from additional proton-proton interactions (pile-up) is crucial for a variety of physics analyses at the LHC, including Standard Model measurements and searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. The identification of such jets is challenging due to the lack of track and vertex information in the pseudorapidity range vertical bar eta vertical bar > 2.5. This paper presents a novel strategy for forward pile-up jet tagging that exploits jet shapes and topological jet correlations in pile-up interactions. Measurements of the per-jet tagging efficiency are presented using a data set of 3.2 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector. The fraction of pile-up jets rejected in the range 2.5 < vertical bar eta vertical bar < 4.5 is estimated in simulated events with an average of 22 interactions per bunch-crossing. It increases with jet transverse momentum and, for jets with transverse momentum between 20 and 50 GeV, it ranges between 49% and 67% with an efficiency of 85% for selecting hard-scatter jets.
