Abstract This study examines the Italian railway system's conversion to electricity from three perspectives : the existing technology, the system's organization, and the competition between electric and steam traction. Italy adopted a backward technology (the low frequency three-phase system) which was abandoned during the 1930*s in favor of continuous current traction. Even though the electrified system was more rationally and more systematically implemented from 1932 on, steam traction remained competitive through the thirties : only the choice of a macro-economic approach, stemming from an autarchic attitude, finally consolidated the implementation of electric traction.
In recognition of the fact that billions of people in the developing world do not have access to clean energies, the United Nations launched the Sustainable Energy for All Initiative to achieve universal energy access by 2030. Although electricity grid extension remains the most prevalent way of providing access, it is now recognized that the central grid is unlikely to reach many remote areas in the near future. At the same time, individual solutions like solar home systems tend to provide very limited services to consumers. Mini-grids offer an alternative by combining the benefits of a grid-based solution with the potential for harnessing renewable energies at the local level. The purpose of this book is to provide in-depth coverage of the use of mini-grids for rural electrification in developing countries, taking into account the technical, economic, environmental and governance dimensions and presenting case studies from South Asia. This book reports on research carried out by a consortium of British and Indian researchers on off-grid electrification in South Asia. It provides state-of-the art technical knowledge on mini-grids and micro-grids including renewable energy integration (or green mini-grids), smart systems for integration with the central grid, and standardization of systems. It also presents essential analytical frameworks and approaches that can be used to analyze the mini-grids comprehensively including their techno-economic aspects, financial viability and regulatory issues. The case studies drawn from South Asia demonstrate the application of the framework and showcase various successful efforts to promote mini-grids in the region. It also reports on the design and implementation of a demonstration project carried out by the team in a cluster of villages in Odisha (India). The book's multi-disciplinary approach facilitates understanding of the relevant practical dimensions of mini-grid systems, such as demand creation (through interventions in livelihood generation and value chain development), financing, regulation, and smart system design. Its state-of-the art knowledge, integrated methodological framework, simulation exercises and real-life case analysis will allow the reader to analyze and appreciate the mini-grid-related activities in their entirety. The book will be of interest to researchers, graduate students, practitioners and policy makers working in the area of rural electrification in developing countries.
What interpretation(s) do today's historians make of electrification? Electrification is a process which began almost a hundred and fifty years ago but which more than one billion men and women still do not have access to. This book displays the social diversity of the electric worlds and of the approaches to their history. It updates the historical knowledge and shows the renewal of the historiography in both its themes and its approaches. Four questions about the passage to the electrical age are raised: which innovations or combination of innovations made this passage a reality? According to which networks and appropriation? Evolving thanks to which tensions and alliances? And resulting in which transition and accumulation?
"For the building industry, the installation of photovoltaic systems has become a new field of activity. Interest in solar energy is growing and future business prospects are excellent. This book describes the practicalities of marketing, designing and installing photovoltaic systems, both grid-tied and stand-alone."--Page 4 of cover
"Regenerating Dixieis the first book that traces the electrification of the US South from the 1880s to the 1970s. It emphasizes that electricity was not solely the result of technological innovation or federal intervention. Instead, it was a multifaceted process that influenced, and was influenced by, environmental alterations, political machinations, business practices, and social matters. Although it generally hewed to national and global patterns, southern electrification charted a distinctive and instructive path and, despite orthodoxies to the contrary, stood at the cutting edge of electrification from the late 1800s onward. Its story speaks to the ways southern experiences with electrification reflected and influenced larger American models of energy development. Inasmuch as the South has something to teach us about the history of American electrification, electrification also reveals things about the South's past. The electric industry was no mere accessory to the "New South" agenda -- the ongoing project of rehabilitating Dixie after the Civil War and Reconstruction. Electricity powered industrialism, consumerism, urban growth, and war. It moved people across town, changed land -- and waterscapes, stoked racial conflict, sparked political fights, and lit homes and farms. Electricity underwrote people's daily lives across a century of southern history. But it was not simply imposed on the South. In fact, one Regenerating Dixie's central lessons is that people have always mattered in energy history. The story of southern electrification is part of the broader struggle for democracy in the American past and includes a range of expected and unexpected actors and events. It also offers insights into our current predicaments with matters of energy and sustainability."--
Access to electricity aims to improve the living conditions of rural dwellers and reduce social inequality. Based on this premise, we analyze the introduction of electricity as a way to achieve Buen Vivir and encourage production development in the rural areas of Taday and Rivera (Ecuador). Interviews with local people, members of private sector, technical public administrators and local politicians highlight the value of this new service due to its positive impact on people´s health and education, on the growing participation of women in the labor force, on reducing social exclusion, and its effect on local economic activity. Taking this into account, local agency and government policies are key elements to stimulate rural development from the productive use of electricity in sectors such as agribusiness and tourism with great potential for development.
version finale avant épreuves ; National audience ; Imagination and the development of technical networks: the contribution of the history of rural electrification in France and the USA Recent historical work suggests the need to reassess the importance of imagination in the expansion of large technical systems, beyond the initial phase of social appropriation of radically new technologies. This paper discusses the role of imagination in the expansion of electricity networks in rural areas of the US and France. It argues that the strong and lasting public support for rural electrification did not stand to reason. Rather it rested on the "modernizing imaginaire" of elected officials and social modernizers who assumed both that there was a strong connection between rural electrification and electrical agriculture, and that electrification could check rural emigration.
