The article presents regional classification of EU countries according to the knowledge development of economy, which in these days is treated as fundamental factor of international competitiveness. This differentiation created with Knowledge Economy Index (KEI) and Knowledge Index (KI), which are use by The World Bank in Knowledge Assessment Methodology (KAM). In the analysis used four main pillars (i.e. The Economic Incentive and Institutional Regime, The Innovation System, Education and Human Resources, Information and Communication Technology), which showed relation between individual components. The purpose of this article is to identify disparities in the use of knowledge in socio-economic life in the EU countries. This research was conducted with use of the cluster analysis (tools belonging to multidimensional comparative analysis). Uwzględnienie czterech głównych filarów (tj. system bodźców ekonomicznych, system innowacyjny, edukacja i jakość zasobów ludzkich oraz nowoczesna infrastruktura informacyjna) umożliwiło wskazanie relacji pomiędzy poszczególnymi składowymi. Celem artykułu jest wskazanie dysproporcji wykorzystania wiedzy w życiu społeczno-gospodarczym w państwach UE. Badanie zostało przeprowadzone przy użyciu analizy skupień (narzędzia zaliczanego do wielowymiarowej analizy porównawczej).

Defence date: 10 June 2016 ; Examining Board: Professor Claire Kilpatrick (EUI Supervisor); Professor Bruno de Witte, EUI; Professor Judy Fudge, University of Kent; Professor Mark Bell, Trinity College Dublin. ; Awarded the Mauro Cappelletti Prize for the 'Best Thesis in Comparative Law' at the European University Institute conferring ceremony on 9 June 2017 ; Due to the interplay of factors such as population ageing, women's entry into paid employment and the decline of the welfare state, EU Member State face increasing needs for domestic work services – primarily care but also cleaning and other housekeeping services. The majority of domestic workers in Europe today are migrants, both EU and third-country nationals. They tend to work under precarious conditions that make them vulnerable to day-to-day exploitation. Migrant domestic workers face low wages, long and unregulated working hours, workplace harassment, lack of protection if they become pregnant, and unlawful dismissals. Such vulnerabilities are to some extent attributed to intersections of race, class and gender-based prejudices. Yet law, in particular migration and labour law, has an important role in constructing and sustaining vulnerabilities. My aim in this thesis is twofold: to examine the role of law in structuring vulnerability and to identify legal sources that can challenge and reduce certain aspects of this vulnerability. In the first part of the thesis I identify the key dimensions of migration law that make domestic workers vulnerable to then build a typology of the different migration law regimes of EU Member States. To examine the role of labour law, I compare the labour law regulation of domestic work in four Member States: Spain, Sweden, Cyprus and the UK. The analysis sheds light to labour law's very different ways in structuring and, in certain instances, reducing vulnerability. In the second part of the thesis I examine the treatment of migrant domestic workers under EU law. I first give an overview of EU migration law sources to locate and evaluate norms relevant to domestic workers. Then I revisit a debate on the personal scope of EU employment law and challenge the flawed assumption that it does not apply to domestic work. I finally argue that EU employment law is a useful but largely misunderstood resource for domestic workers.
Taking a contextual approach to EU free movement law, this book examines the interplay between the different normative concerns behind the EU's market freedoms identified in legal discourse. Through this approach, fundamental freedoms can best be understood as an interplay of doctrines and practices, as well as the institutions where this law is applied

"To migrate or not to migrate: that is the question. This book discusses migration in the highly topical context of Ukraine, and explores the imaginations, life-stories, aspirations and life-projects of people in Ukraine through a consideration of Ukrainian migration to the European Union (EU) from the perspective of the sending-country. Building on the existing literature and drawing on a rich variety of empirical data and field research, this text addresses migration by Ukrainian nationals into the EU, and how and why people leave or stay in Ukraine. The book also considers questions of subjectivity, the self and the construction of narratives, and contributes more widely to the significant academic and policy debates surrounding Ukrainian migration in the EU"--
Unique in bringing together contributions from academics and practitioners on the theme of strategic, intelligent modern lobbying this book provides a thorough and accessible discussion on key ideas pertinent to the pursuance of public affairs in the European Union. Combining innovative academic research with first-hand professional experience it offers the reader a combination of practical recommendations, case studies and academic theory to add new insights to interest group research and lobbying strategies. While focusing on the European Union the contributors acknowledge the multi-level dimension of EU decision-making and incorporate research on multi-level governance as well as lobbying by sub-national authorities. Through this they present a fuller picture of a subject that should appeal to students, academics and practitioners alike.--

This paper examine the development of railway passenger transport in the European Union countries by using criteria related to the transportation process and the level of economic development of the countries. The study proposes a methodology based on the combination of multicriteria methods. In the first step we determine the indicators to be used in evaluating railway passenger development. As main criteria of the assessment we have chosen social and economic factors, infrastructure factors, factors associated with travel and technological factors. In the second step, using the Fuzzy AHP method, the weights of the criteria and sub-criteria have been calculated. In the third step, we have rated the studied countries by means of the PROMETHEE method. The results show that the factors associated with travel and technological factors have great importance in the ranking of the countries and that, when all factors are taken into account, the countries with the most highly developed railway passenger transport are Germany, Britain and France. The results of the method in the fourth step were compared by applying Cluster analysis. The railway passenger transport in European Union countries have been classified into 5 groups.
This book is the product of a joint research program between the Institute of West Asia & African Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Beijing and the Energy Program Asia of the International Institute for Asian Studies, Leiden University. China?s transition to an urban-industrial society relies on its abundant domestic coal supplies, and on an increase in oil and gas imports. However, authorities are confronted with trade-offs between investments in expanding supplies of fossils, environmental sustainability, energy efficiency and in clean energy. Resources spent on expanding imported energy have to weighted against clean energy investments and improving efficiency of the fossil-fuel sector. The same is no less true for the European Union and its member states. Import dependency on piped gas is again growing. Security of supply of natural gas depends on political cooperation with energy-rich countries. At the same the EU has to meet its clean energy commitments by compromises between member states and ?Brussels?. Chinese National Oil Companies bridge the worlds of government in China and the extractive sector in hydrocarbon exporting-countries. At the global level, Chinese (Trans-)National Oil Companies maintain competitive and cooperative relations with privately owned International Oil companies. This book focuses, among others, on these networks with the objective to contribute to the study of the geopolitical economy of the energy sectors in the global system.
