The revival in global growth in the second quarter of last year can be traced to a sharp rise in domestic demand in mainland China, as well as Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea. While GDP increased in Germany, France and Japan as well, growth in these economies relied on a rise in external demand, whereas domestic demand in these countries continued to decline. The rise in Asian domestic demand has been strongly supported by a series of fiscal packages. The scope of stimulus packages introduced in the larger Asian economies dwarfs the size of packages introduced in most European economies, averaging 4–5 per cent of GDP.

Abstract: The principle that detention should be a measure of last resort is an important benchmark of children's rights. However, it is unclear what obligations this principle imposes upon states and little consistency in its application. The Australian experience illustrates the enduring tensions between formal commitments to the protection of children and detention practices at a state and federal level. Recent federal government immigration detention policies and the New South Wales state government's criminal justice policies demonstrate the contradictory and potentially abusive approaches taken by various governments to the detention of young people and the limitations of children's rights.

Literature on the siblings of disabled children has been dominated by western psychosocial theories that focus on stresses associated with being a 'young carer' or on children as active agents realising their 'rights' rather than as the victims of familial expectations. This article presents the findings of a visual ethnographic study exploring the lives of nine children living with an autistic sibling in South Korea (hereafter Korea). Despite personal challenges and family tensions, experiences of 'being' a sibling were strongly influenced by Confucian familist cultural values in which sacrifice plays a central role in achieving honourable and harmonious family life.

The main conclusion is that the richest countries in the EU show little evidence of significant urban-rural differences, whereas, in the poorer countries of the east and south, rural areas have a much lower level of perceived welfare and quality of life, particularly in the candidate countries. Despite this, subjective well-being is not significantly different, and this paradox is explored through multi-level modelling. The paper concludes by considering the policy implications for rural policy, urban policy and cohesion policy.

In 1763, a regiment of mercenary soldiers stationed on the border of Suriname and Berbice in South America, rebelled. The men had been sent to help subdue a large slave rebellion. Instead, they mutinied and joined the rebelling slaves. This paper reconstructs the mutiny from Dutch records and uses it to look at the role of soldiers as border crosser in the Atlantic world. Colonial historians have usually studied soldiers in their capacity of border enforcers, men who maintained the cultural and legal divisions that supported colonial authority. However, as I show, soldiers with great regularity crossed those same borders, threatening the very foundations of colonialism.

AbstractIn June 2003, a large‐scale survey was conducted among South Carolina nonprofit agencies to gather information on a range of board governance issues. Some of the survey questions dealt with how each agency's board contributes to the organization. More than 80 percent of the responding agencies were registered as 501(c)(3), with the largest number of respondents in the human services category. Statistical analysis reveals where actual roles differ from "best practices" as prescribed in the literature. Discussion then focuses on how these trends in governance affect management and operations. In particular, we look at best practice regarding the separation of board and staff duties.

This article argues that farm service was an adaptable and sustainable system of hiring labour in areas of midland and southern England after 1850, having much in common with the model recently identified for northern England and Scotland. Analysing the Census Enumerators Books from selected parishes in seven counties in 1851, 1871, and 1891, we reveal an intricate pattern of farm service 'survival' both within and between counties. We then use a range of reports printed between the 1860s and 1920s to examine the national picture. The later regional persistence of farm service has implications for broader debates on the rural workforce and social relations.

The purpose of this study was to explore rural and provincial students' conceptualizations of nature in Colombia alongside the science education offered in their school communities. Students' perceptions of nature were produced from interviews that revolved around a focusing event and two eliciting devices to document their views about home, school science, and nature. Eighteen students from two urban and one provincial school communities were invited to participate in an interview. An anthropological approach to education allowed for case descriptions in urban and provincial settings in a northeastern region of Colombia, South America. The findings specifically reflect how multiple worldviews correlate with the framework of school science.
