The purpose of this article is to explore how creative competencies acquired through involvement in music and style-based youth cultures are being converted by young people into DIY (do-it-yourself) careers. This term, as applied here, covers a range of alternative and do-it-yourself modes of work and employment not governed by the acquisition of formal qualifications and training, but, rather, grounded in knowledge and practical know-how acquired through participation in music and style-based youth cultures and associated consumption, leisure and lifestyle practices. The article examines how the emergence of the DIY career can be placed in the context of the collapse of the youth labour market and the increasingly precarious position in which young people find themselves. It also argues that, given the increasing emphasis among youth (and indeed post-youth individuals) placed on the significance of music as a source of DIY career-making, some redefinition of the term DIY music-making and the sphere of DIY creative practice is necessary, particularly in respect of its relationship to more mainstream cultural industries and the related concept of the 'creative city'.

While more doctoral students are pregnant and/or parenting in their doctoral programs than previously, little research has focused on their experiences. This qualitative study ( N = 28) explored the experiences of female doctoral students who were pregnant during their doctoral program (in a health-care field) and their decision-making about careers postgraduation. This study examined participants' perceptions of the implicit and explicit culture, professional expectations, and the role of these experiences on career goals and trajectories. Participants described an academic culture of high expectations, in which mothers could be successful if they maintained a silence about their identity as a mother and ensured that their family life did not negatively impact their work productivity. Some perceived lost opportunities in graduate school and/or on the job market due to pregnancies and parenting during graduate school. The impact of these experiences on postgraduate careers was diverse, but the majority spoke of wanting to find a position in a family-friendly organization where family was valued and work life balance was possible. For some, this was an academic position, while for others this was a full-time practice position or part-time work.

The term "Patorani" refers to a person who works to catch flying fish. This activity is still mostly done by fishermen in South Sulawesi. In the activity of catching flying fish, there are a number of things that work outside of human rationality wrapped with religious understanding by using simple technology that is environmentally friendly. Departing from that premise, this paper intends to reveal various occult and religiosity in catching flying fish. The method used to reveal patorani activity is ethnography through in-depth discussion with patorani fishermen. This research was conducted in Galesong sub district of Takalar regency. The results show that the world of fly fishing is full of mysticism and is influenced by the religious ideology of patorani. It is argued that it would be anachronistic if patorani fishermen practicing centuries old methods were seen as an act of "environmental destruction". The heart of the problem is not in catching the flying fish, but in its patorani culture (magic, religiosity, and technology) that keeps their activities in a controlled environment, a culture that is proven to be sustainable even though the blue revolution and world markets demand shakes it.

International audience ; This handbook aims to challenge 'gender blindness' in the historical study of high politics, power, authority and government, by bringing together a group of scholars at the forefront of current historical research into the relationship between masculinity and political power. Until very recently in historical terms, formal political authority in Europe was normally and ideally held by adult males, with female power being perceived as a recurrent aberration. Yet paradoxically the study of the interactions between masculinity and political culture is still very much in its infancy. This volume seeks to remedy this lacuna by considering the different consequences of the masculinity of power over two millennia of European history. It examines how masculinity and political culture have interacted from ancient Rome and the early medieval Byzantine empire, to twentieth-century Germany and Italy. It considers a broad variety of case studies from early medieval Iceland and late medieval France, to Naples at the time of the French Revolution and Strasbourg after the Franco-Prussian War, with a particular focus on the development of political masculinities in Great Britain between the sixteenth century and the present day.

UNTSO was the first peacekeeping mission created by the United Nations. They have been in the Middle East since June 1948 with the task of overseeing the implementation of the ceasefire between Israel and Arab countries, including seeking resolution of the conflict between Israel and Palestine. One of the reasons many UN peace missions fail, including UNTSO, was because the peacekeepers do not have the ability to understand the local culture in which they are placed. One of the main difficulties faced by peacekeepers in a conflict involving two groups with two different cultures is uncertainty about cultural values. UNTSO personnel very rarely received training as such and like the usual army, their tendency is to use violence to solve conflicts. There should be a special cultural training focused on developing an understanding of the cultural context, such as background orientation, origin, conflict parties, history, religion, customs, and local community language. This paper tries to provide an analysis through an understanding of cross-cultural competency, which is expected to provide recommendations for resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

This paper proposes an evaluative approach to a Program of public policy in culture of the National Directorate of Culture: las «Usinas Culturales». We particularly address the analysis through the reflection on policy as a process. That is to say, thinking differents moments of policy development –design, implementation, and making contact with citizens– as instances of production of meanings. In this direction, we propose the concepts of «translation» and «performativity» to assess the processes of mediation through which agents redefine and disputed implementation and policy access criteria. ; Este trabajo propone un acercamiento evaluativo a un programa de política pública en cultura de la Dirección Nacional de Cultura: las Usinas Culturales. Nos interesa particularmente abordar el análisis mediante la reflexión acerca de la política como proceso. Es decir, pensando distintos momentos de su desarrollo —concepción, implementación y toma en contacto con los ciudadanos— como instancias de producción de significados. En esta dirección, proponemos los conceptos de «traducción» y «performatividad» para dar cuenta de los procesos de mediación a través de los cuáles los diversos agentes redefinen y disputan los criterios de implementación y acceso de la política.

National character education aims to form a strong, competitive, moral, tolerant nation, mutual cooperation, patriotic spirit, dynamic development, knowledge and technology oriented all of which are inspired by faith and piety to the Almighty God as in aspiring to the Pancasila philosophy. Character education is an important issue in the world of education related to the phenomenon of moral decadence that occurs in the community as well as in an increasingly diverse and diverse government environment. Crime, injustice, corruption, violence against children, violation of human rights, are evidence that there has been a crisis of identity and characteristics of the Indonesian nation. The values of politeness, and religiosity that are upheld and become the culture of the Indonesian nation as long as it seems to be weak and feels foreign along with the entry of global cultural values (global culture of the era), so that it is rarely encountered in the midst of society. Islamic education is a strategic answer in realizing the formation of national character from the family (informal), institutional institutions (formal) and learning groups in the community (non-formal), which is the main capital in the formation of national character.

The objective of this research is to determine the forms and causes of discrimination in the services delivery provision of North Lampung population and civil registration agency. The research was a descriptive qualitative. Research results showed the prevalence of discriminatory practices in the delivery of services in the Population and Civil Registration agency in North Lampung Regency. Dissemination took forms of time required, and cost incurred to obtain services, attitude of service providers, and procedures that differed between those that applied to ordinary citizens (long and tedious) and for others (short and quick) that included the rich, officials, community leaders and relatives or acquaintances of population and civil registration agency. However, there was no evidence of discrimination in service delivery that was based on race and religion. Culture, as manifested in paternalistic form and bureaucratic hierarchy was the main cause of discrimination in the services delivery in population and civil registration agency. Thus, paternalism and bureaucracy culture underlie favoritism accorded to officials and rulers, individuals in key positions of government and society, and relatives and acquaintances of employees in the agency as opposed to other members of society.

Current public and political interactions are becoming increasingly populist, illustrating the great success of an approach that creates the belief that majority populations in Europe and USA are in fact beleaguered, as if they are a minority threatened by those considered allochthonous. People's democratic agency is thereby silenced and weakened. The Institut des cultures d'Islam (ICI) deflates populism's boast by bringing individuals, ideas and artefacts together in a local setting to deconstruct these generalities by being together. The methodology of this paper is to use philosophy, literary analysis, social theory and physics to analyse the ICI as the same breathed space in which many interpersonal ruptures can be made possible, recognized as such and then averted. There are ambiguities of difference and of the positive tensions that can be created by bring 'culte' (worship) and 'culture' (art) together. This article proposes that the modulus, the measure of (human) rigidity (and flexibility), can be used to analyse what happens at the ICI and to consider how outsider 'experts' can both approach this space and accept that their grasp of what is at stake within it will remain partial.

In discussions of African cultural politics, a new label of 'Afropolitan' refers to diverse engagements by Africans who are typically members of the cultural elite, and participate in diaspora politics, online activism, fashion and literature debates. Simultaneously, in discussions of development aid, celebrity has become a way of mediating between proximity and distance in imagining relationships between South and North. Afropolitanism can be usefully considered as an Africa-specific, post-colonial form of cosmopolitanism that spans discourses of elite pan-African culture to theories of elite global aid culture. We argue that there are essential connections between the rise of Afropolitanism and the celebritization of North-South relations. In this realm, "Afropolitanism" is an idea combining cosmopolitanism's notions of kindness to strangers in a world where the 'kindness' is aid and the 'strangers' are Africans. We analyse two archetypical Afropolitan performances by Danish aid celebrities to argue that their representations of Africa's external relations are theoretically more interesting, and politically more dangerous, than is currently understood. In doing so, we expand the debates around Afropolitanism and celebritization from the realm of cultural politics to one of International Relations.

Indonesia is renowned as a multicultural state. But for the last ten years, it has been facing social, ethnic, religious, and cultural problems. These tensions can be seen throughout Indonesian society, and there are various attempts to address them. One such area is Bali. The Balinese people live in harmony even as their culture is very diverse. This study attempts to elucidate religious life of a multicultural society, especially Hindus-Moslem relationships in Bali after Denpasar Suicide Bombing in 2002. Using qualitative and phenomenological approach, this research aims at understanding, analyzing, and exploring patterns of Hindus-Moslem relationship, in the hope of understanding how to cultivate harmony within a multicultural society. The Hindus-Moslem relationship in Denpasar (Indonesia) is very distinctive. It has emphasized cooperation in building a social-religious life inseparable from Bali Aga (Balinese life). This study shows that Balinese people are performing this ideal of cooperation through the employment of political, social and cultural initiatives. In this way, the government and the people have attempted to conserve Balinese culture, using its unique tradition of menyama braya, to foster harmonious religious life among the Balinese people.

Or, il n'en est rien, comme l'indique notamment l'étude de Nicolas Aubouin, Frédéric Kletz et Olivier Lenay, Entre continent et archipel. Les configurations professionnelles de la médiation culturelle, publiée par le ministère de la Culture (DEPS) en 2009. Cette étude indique que la médiation s'est aujourd'hui largement diffusée et peut même être considérée comme banalisée dans le secteur culturel, mais sur la base de métiers mal définis et dans des configurations professionnelles éclatées. Il en est de même du côté de la recherche, notamment française : aucune définition véritablement partagée n'a émergé du travail théorique mené depuis les années 1990 notamment en information-communication, sociologie de l'art et de la culture, esthétique et sciences politiques. En revanche, autour de la médiation culturelle, s'est construit un champ de recherche remarquablement fécond où se croisent ces disciplines qui ont toutes pour objet la circulation, la transmission et l'appropriation des contenus et des représentations.

This paper presents a framework of introducing GIS technology to record and analyse cultural heritages in continuous spatial scales. The research team is developing a systematic approach to support heritage conservation research and practice on historical buildings, courtyards, historical towns, and archaeological sites ad landscapes. These studies are conducted not only from the property or site scales, but also investigated from their contexts in setting as well as regional scales. From these continues scales, authenticity and integrity of a heritage can be interpreted from a broader spatial and temporal context, in which GIS would contribute through database, spatial analysis, and visualization. The case study is the construction of a information indexing framework of Dagu Dock industrial heritage to integrate physical buildings, courtyards, natural settings as well as their intangible characteristics which are affiliated to the physical heritage properties and presented through historical, social and culture semantics. The paper illustrates methodology and content of recording physical and social/cultural semantics of culture heritages on different scales as well as connection between different levels of database.
