The paper analyzes the sociological theory. Western type public modernity theories are assumed as a process, for which a developing society is approaching the developed societies reaching a certain level of economic growth, a certain level of public participation and the democratic stage of development, giving the individual more physical, social and economic mobility. Structural functionalism (Parson, 1997; Merton, 1997 et al.). With the approach to this theory, it can be said that inequality in education stems from the ascription to social class, strata, ethnic groups, etc., also due to individual's achievements, which are usually associated with the innate talents and efforts. The analysis of an individual's social functioning and social stratification is based on the approach to Capital theory (Bourdieu, 1986). Thus, the participation of education players in education system, also the accessibility of education to an individual depends on the volume and structure of the available capital. Participation in individual's reproduction process and education system, based on the approach to this theory, is defined by individual's habits (habitus), and harmony with individual's social status. The theory of social conflict (Dahrendorf, 1996; Coser, 1969) argues that conflicts can be identified among all social systems and the educational institute. In terms of social conflict society is the actual and potential arena of conflicts. Network activity theory (Burt, 1982; Granovetter, 1973; Castells, 2005) aims to analyze and describe reciprocal link models in the social system. The followers of this theory keep to the opinion that social structures need to be investigated first, as the players' behavior is constrained by social structures. Šios teorijos suteikia galimybę iš sociologinės perspektyvos įvertinti dabartinio laikotarpio visuomenės tendencijas, atskleisti skirtingų pakopų švietimo institucijų veiklos suderinamumo ir nuoseklumo problemas, jų tarpusavio sąveiką ir santykį su kitomis visuomenės socialinėmis sistemomis, švietimo vaidmenį tobulinant visuomenės socialinę struktūrą.

Domingo Morel explores the history and political factors that led to the creation of community-centered affirmative action programs for students of color in the 1960s. Through a case study of an existing program, Talent Development, Morel shows how protest, including violent protest, has been instrumental in the maintenance of college access programs. He also reveals that in response to the college expansion efforts of the 1960s, hidden forms of restriction emerged that have significantly impacted students of color.

Affective domain is believed globally to be one of the main areas of human experience and development. While affective education is generally valued as a significant aspect of education, its interpretation and realization may vary across countries and cultures. The primary purpose of the present research is to investigate how affective education is conceptualized and implemented in contemporary China. To achieve such an aim, a qualitative case study was conducted in the capital city of Guangdong Province- Guangzhou. A middle school in the city with uniqueness in its practice of affective education was selected as the case school for study. Fieldwork was carried out from the year of 2005 to 2007 to investigate the perceptions of school leaders, teachers and students about the concept and practice of affective education. Multiple methods were employed in this research. Data were drawn from in-depth interviews with the present and former school principal, Communist Party Secretary at school, teachers and students of the school. Evidence was also collected via on-site observations, analysis of textbooks, learning materials and school documents. A shadowing approach of observation to the principal was also launched. A total of 42 informants were interviewed and 25 sessions of participant and non-participant observations were conducted in the campus. Different sources of the data were categorized, thematically analyzed, and triangulated. The functions, content elements and the practice of affective education were identified. Findings showed that affective education was implemented in the name of Meiyu which meant aesthetic education in its broadest sense. The salient functions and content of Meiyu as affective education were closely related to character formation and Chinese traditional values as well as political ideology. An essential feature of centralized management of affective education in a collectivistic culture was also illuminated in the study. The findings revealed the essential class teachers' pastoral task of being role models for character development and providing comprehensive care and support to individual student and at class level. It was also affirmed that time-honoured moral values were particularly dominant for creating school climate in a Chinese context. The provision of affective education as shown in this study involved a direct concern for the moral development of students. Playing the role as an agent imparting moral values, affective education in China cultivates a unique affective experience- Chinese affect to nurture moral individuals with the ultimate goal of serving the interests of the collective. The unique approach of implementing affective education in a Chinese pastoral care structure also witnesses the tension of regulation of self versus liberation of self. While this study reaffirms mainland theorists' framework about affective moral education, it also informs the extant theories of affective education that though affective education in the East and the West are concerned about enhancing students' affective development, they differ much in their emphasis. ; published_or_final_version ; Education ; Doctoral ; Doctor of Philosophy

For a long time ago, Indonesia was identified as maritime country. The collective memory remembered from several islands in Indonesia shows that Indonesia is a large maritime space. The original name of the country was Nusantara, (called archipelago in English). From historical data in some location, there are some evidences about the glorious of the maritime kingdom in the continent. However, maritime perspective is not to be 'important issue" in the mind of Indonesian people nowadays. History education makes an important rule at the moment. Indonesian independence needs history education based on political perspective, especially to enhance nationalism. The orientation is continued until the New Order, and it is especially focused on the rule of Indonesia military. Reformation since 1998 should make democratization in Indonesian history teaching, but the reality, the tradition of writer in history education, was still stagnant. The content of maritime history in Indonesian History Education still become a big problem. This paper aims to analyze the development of the maritime content in Indonesian History education at school and to give the new alternative in teaching history based on maritime content. The alternative curriculum based on local competitiveness in maritime history related with regional and global region, is the best solution for it.

Inspired by the entertainment-education radio soap opera, Taru, a family from the upper-caste brahmin community in Bihar, India, allowed men from the lower caste dalit community to serve water to guests during their daughter's wedding. While most social change projects achieve first-order change, that is, change within a system which itself remains unchanged, Taru seemed to have engendered second-order changes, that is, changing the system itself. The present article investigates how Taru generated second-order changes in Bihar, distilling lessons for how entertainment-education programmes can be strategically positioned to create and sustain systemic social change.

Two views about the amount of opportunity available through technical education are contrasted. In popular discussions the system figures as an `alternative route' to middle class occupations. In sociological literature, however, it is dismissed as a significant source of opportunity. A review is presented of important but neglected changes in the organization of courses and the recruitment of young men to them. It is shown that both class and educational differentials do reduce the proportion of places on advanced and full time courses which are available for early leavers and for boys of working class origin. On the other hand an analysis of long run trends in terms of (i) the participation of each social class in technical education, (ii) transition rates between different levels of study, (iii) the link between qualification and occupational rewards, suggests that attempts to discount technical colleges as a source of opportunity may be premature. It is concluded that any discussion of the effect of increasing educational opportunity upon social mobility entails the examination of the institutional mechanisms through which individuals are prepared and trained for occupational roles.

This volume presents a critical discussion that brings contemporary academic debate about 'southern theory' to Global Citizenship Education (GCE). It situates the discussion around GCE in the Global South within a critical and post-colonial paradigm informed by the values and knowledge of critical pedagogy ingrained in social justice. Global Citizenship Education in the Global South invites the reader into chapters written by educators exploring, analysing, and celebrating ideas and concepts on GCE in the Global South. The book is presented as a pedagogical tool for discussion that invites educators to reflect critically on the possible origins and implications of GCE discourses they are exposed to. The book is designed with the intent to contribute towards the possibility of imagining a 'yet-to-come' critical-transformative and post-colonial and value-creating GCE curriculum beyond a westernised, market-oriented and apolitical practices towards a more sustainable paradigm based on principles of mutuality and reciprocity
