Abstract This article brings the transcription and revision of the roundtable discussion held at the III Latin American Congress of Political Ecology, which aimed to debate different experiences of collective struggles against projects of extraction of natural resource, with the participation of indigenous leaders, traditional communities and activist intellectuals. The narratives shares experiences in processes in which there was collective resistance to extractive-colonial projects and the right to say "no" was put into practice. In general, the presentations discussed the right to say no that emerges beyond the right to consultation, and that has as its assumption the guarantee of collective autonomy over life territories.

Abstract Using the example of the controversial Site C dam in British Columbia, Canada, this article describes how ethnographic research that incorporated a conflict transformation perspective and included individuals from both sides of the issue highlighted both contrasting views on human-environment relations and the inequitable conditions under which they met through the Environmental Assessment process. The article argues that an anthropological approach that incorporates a conflict transformation perspective is particularly well-suited to identify, and potentially to address, the "discourses, narratives, and worldviews" (Rodriguez and Inturias 2018: 96) that operate as "cultural violence" (Galtung, 1990) in state-Indigenous environmental conflicts, legitimating structural and environmental violence.

COVID‐19 has been particularly damaging to already vulnerable social groups, such as forest peoples. In Brazil, indigenous, Afro‐Brazilian quilombolas and other racialised communities have suffered disproportionately under Bolsonaro's hands‐off policy during the pandemic. We argue that, far from happenstance, this policy fits into a form of necropolitics towards forest peoples. Drawing from Achille Mbembe's seminal work, this article analyses how underlying (and sometimes overt) racism, cultural depredation, and government‐supported deforestation constitute an assault now catalysed by the pandemic. Understanding forest peoples' disproportionate deaths in perspective is critical for addressing their growing vulnerability and the broader politics currently at play.

AbstractThis article analyses how the Inter‐American System for the protection of human rights has used ILO standards as a reference on matters relating to freedom of association and the rights of indigenous peoples. Having established the limits to their use, the authors also analyse how these standards have influenced recent Inter‐American jurisprudence in relation to certain economic, social and cultural rights. They argue that such cross‐referencing is both desirable and useful, since it allows the Inter‐American bodies to base their arguments on the interpretation of specialized authorities, thereby reinforcing the credibility, normative legitimacy and universality of their decisions.

I walked into the Seville Cathedral, in 1998, and, unprepared, found myself face-to-face with Cristoforo Colombo's tomb. History classes had taught me he had "discovered" the Americas. My young mind could not make sense of how an European explorer could "discover" lands already home to millions of fellow humans. Even a young mind could grasp the implications in the narrative of "discovery" of the Americas: Europeans were superior to Indigenous peoples. After decades of curiosity and formal education, I finally had a chance to say a few words to Colombo's remains in person. Here is my letter to him.

In the humid Mexican tropics, the State has been promoting an undercovered internal extractivism based on oil revenues to integrate the area into national development through energy matrix projects since the 1950´s. However, on June 22, 2017, Zoque communities managed to suspend the government's flagship project, the 2.2 oil round that sought to extract 239 million barrels of oil from 10 indigenous municipalities in Chiapas. This article reflects on the political action of Movimiento Indígena del Pueblo Creyente Zoque en Defensa de la Vida y la Tierra (ZODEVITE) that is unfolding under the encyclical of the Laudato Sí of Pope Francis, in northern Chiapas.

This article merges the intellectual concept of utopia and the material culture of the pie as a metaphor to explore the relative hegemony of Judeo-Christian (and/or Anglo-European) utopian literature and criticism. Citing Lyman Tower Sargent's contributions to opening up scholarship on comparative utopias, the author underscores his influence on her own thinking and publications on the topic. The study traces parallels between intellectual and material cultures, especially in French, Japanese, and Indigenous Australian contexts. In conclusion, it suggests that contemporary transformations in writing and reading utopias should encourage greater recognition of intercultural imaginaries of the ideal.

This article explores how a disability justice framework would provide greater access to law school and therefore the legal profession for disabled students of color; specifically, disabled Black, Indigenous, and Latinx students. Using DisCrit principles formulated by Subini Annamma, David Connor, and Beth Ferri (2013), this article provides suggestions for incorporating a disability justice lens to legal education. In doing so, this article specifically recognizes the work of three disability justice activist-attorney-scholars, Lydia X.Z. Brown, Talila "TL" Lewis, and Katherine Pérez, and considers lessons from their advocacy and leadership that can apply in the law school setting.

This article examines an arranged marriage between a seven-year-old Inka girl and an adult Spanish man, and the prosecution that followed. Historians of marriage in the early modern Hispanic world have found broad support for the principle of free consent, which underlay Catholic marriage law and prohibited child marriage. Child marriage was legally invalid and rare. Yet, in this case none of the participants, whether Spanish or indigenous, in favor or opposed to the marriage, considered child marriage to be wrong in itself. The marriage of a child provided members of two ruling castes (colonial elites and colonized Inkas) a shared space for family alliance.

The ontological turn in anthropological methodology, at least in its conceptualization-oriented formulation, aims to turn away from the concepts and objects found within one's own social setting in order to turn to indigenous conceptualization processes and take a look at "the things (and persons) themselves." This article aims to unpack what such constant reconceptualization amounts to, arguing that when modified to meet certain objections, the ontological turn could provide important ingredients for an alternative version of interpretive social science—one that wishes to understand social phenomena as human kinds in the vein of Ian Hacking, Sally Haslanger and Ron Mallon.

AbstractThis article argues that child protection agencies must provide mandatory training about the Aboriginal experience within the welfare state and the resultant trauma that exists in Australian Indigenous communities. This article highlights the areas of curriculum to be included in training for welfare practitioners working with Aboriginal families in the New South Wales child protection system. The training content explores the Stolen Generations' trauma experiences of child loss and examines the dichotomy between past child welfare laws and present child protection laws and intergenerational racism. Another key component of the training comprises information about the impacts of trauma on brain development.

This article discusses the rumour of gold in an indigenous, Andean community. As the rumour circulated, it triggered speculation regarding potential claims to the gold, as well as concerns about how extraction should be managed in order to maintain a good relationship with the animate landscape. Specifically, the rumour tested the previous flexibility of community rules concerning land access, as well as assigning more responsibility to the rotated local leadership position. Rumours offer insights into the social and emotional contexts within which resource extraction takes place, while at the same time playing an important part in shaping these very same contexts.

Despite the prominence of poverty in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, two-spirit, and other sexual and gender minorities (LGBTQ2S+) in Canada, studies that centre the material conditions of these groups as sites of inquiry remain scant. Accordingly, in this paper we present an intersectional narrative review of the limited Canadian literature on LGBTQ2S+ poverty. We examine 39 studies, published between 2000 and 2018, that report Canadian data on poverty in LGBTQ2S+ youth, older adults, racial minorities and Indigenous groups. We highlight intersectional differences reflected across these axes of social location, and consider research, policy and practice implications of our analysis.

The present study investigates residents' perception of tourism as a sustainable development driver and explores the reasons why residents recognize their own place of residence as an attractive tourism destination. The work considers one of Italy's most visited tourist destinations (Puglia) and uses quantitative (i.e., inferential and text mining) and qualitative (i.e., survey) approaches. Main results reveal that socio-economic and environmental factors positively affect residents' perception of tourism as a driver of sustainable development. Furthermore, the spatial dimensions of the territories of Puglia, perceived by indigenous local knowledge, are key elements for tourist attractiveness of its destinations.

El presente trabajo es un recorte teórico-histórico de una indagación más amplia en curso, cuyo objetivo es comprender las relaciones existentes entre las formas de vida comunitaria –campesinas e indígenas– en espacios periféricos y el desarrollo de las dinámicas estatales locales, nacionales y regionales que inciden en las configuraciones identitarias y territoriales. ; The present work consists of a theoretical-historical outline of a broader ongoing investigation, whose objective is to understand the existing relations between forms of community life–peasant and indigenous in peripheral spaces and the development of local, national and regional state dynamics that affect identity and territorial configurations.
