Using detailed case studies of anti-superstore controversies in six small cities in five states, Halebsky employs a comparative-historical approach to construct an explanation of how some of these local social movements managed to prevail against Wal-Mart. This explanation is then extended to provide the basis for a model of the general conditions under which local communities may be able to constrain unwanted corporate action. From houses to roads, infrastructures offer a unique lens through which to explore social and political change. Serving as an important conduit between states and citizens, infrastructures provide governments with a powerful tool to mould subjects and control populations. Yet, at the same time they also give individuals, communities, and movements a platform to challenge the state and forge alternative forms of citizenship and politics. Infrastructures therefore shape social and political relations in unexpected ways and never dutifully follow the scripts of politicians, bureaucrats, and engineers. Latin America provides fertile terrain to explore these issues. The region has been subject to extensive foreign intervention for centuries and much of its infrastructure has primarily been constructed to benefit colonial and imperial powers. Yet Latin America has also seen widespread resistance to colonial-capitalist expansion, and infrastructures have been central to these diverse struggles. Drawing on recent empirical research, this cross-disciplinary book demonstrates the value of analysing social and political change through infrastructure. The authors explore a diverse range of Latin American infrastructures, from a sparkling new tram network in Ecuador to a crumbling old nuclear plant in Cuba. Building on the empirical chapters, the editors demonstrate the value of conceptualising infrastructure as a relational and experimental process. In addition to making a novel contribution to global infrastructure debates, the volume offers important new insights into Latin American history, society, and politics.

In Eritrea und in Südafrika hatten Frauen in der Phase des Bürgerkrieges bzw. des Anti-Apartheidskampfes einen im afrikanischen Vergleich ungewöhnlich großen Anteil am politischen Geschehen. Nach Ende des politischen Widerstandes änderte sich diese Situation insbesondere in Eritrea radikal. In Südafrika ist die Gleichberechtigung von Frauen zwar ein zentrales Element der Verfassung, de facto zeigen sich im Alltag jedoch die Schwierigkeiten bei der Umsetzung dieses Anspruchs. Der vorliegende Artikel schildert die gesellschaftliche Situation von Frauen in beiden Gesellschaften, stellt die wichtigsten Frauenbewegungen, ihre Forderungen und bisherigen Erfolge vor. (DÜI-Spl)

The article analyzes the problem of Ukraine's development since independence. A comparison of the way of organizing social reality in modern Ukraine and in the Soviet period is carried out. The main regulatory factor in the life of Soviet society was the principle of domination. Ukraine has inherited the principle of domination and retains its leading role in the current social order. Its various manifestations that determine the structure of Ukrainian society, in particular the growth of the bureaucratic class and bureaucratic pressure on all spheres and sections of life, are analyzed. The dominance of bureaucracy contains latent violence, feeds corruption and minimizes social dynamics. It is also a phenomenon of power rent, which finds its expression in a kind of "privatization of the state." Another universal effect of the principle of domination is the doubling of social reality into apparent and hidden. The apparent reality becomes a space for the existence of ordinary citizens and the implementation of legal procedures, while the hidden one contains a system of real circulation of power, which is not regulated by any legal regulations, instead, controls all movements of the social body. The systemic role in the hidden society is played by cliques — informal groups of influential people who really control the course of events. The con- sequence of the principle of domination is the passivity and marginalization of the Ukrainian citizen, associated with the defect of political participation. Such non-participation in power is embodied in such forms of consciousness as hope, liking, and despair. Today, independence is not a given, but a chance that must be realized. The way to this is through the restoration of the role of the people as a sovereign power and the development of non-dominant regulatory factors of sociality. ; У статті аналізується проблема розвитку України за доби незалежності та здійснюється зіставлення способу організації соціальної дійсності в сучасній Україні та в радянський період. Головним реґулятивним чинником життя радянського суспільства був принцип панування. Україна успадкувала цей принцип панування і зберігає його чільну роль у чинному нині соціальному ладі. Автор аналізує його різноманітні вияви, що задають структуру української соціальності, зокрема зростання чиновницького класу та бюрократичний тиск на всі сфери та ланки життя. Засилля бюрократії містить латентне насильство, живить корупцію та мінімізує соціальну динаміку. Також ідеться про феномен владної ренти, що втілюється у своєрідній «приватизації держави». Ще одним універсальним ефектом принципу панування є подвоєння соціальної дійсності на позірну та приховану. Позірна дійсність перетворюється на простір існування пересічних громадян та здійснення леґальних процедур, тоді як прихована містить нереґламентовану жодною леґальною нормативністю систему реальної циркуляції влади, а відтак і керування всіма рухами соціального тіла. Системну роль у прихованій соціальності відіграють кліки — неформальні угруповання впливових осіб, що реально контролюють перебіг справ. Наслідком принципу панування є пасивність та марґіналізація українського громадянина, пов'язані з дефектом політичної участі. Втіленням цієї не-участі у владі стають такі форми свідомості, як сподівання, вподобання та зневіра. Отже, на сьогодні незалежність є не даністю, а шансом, який ще треба зреалізувати. Шлях до цього пролягає через відновлення ролі народу як суверена влади та розвиток відмінних від принципу панування реґулятивних чинників соціальності.

Berkeley y luego publicada en su influyente libro Networking Futures: the Movements against Corporate Globalization (2008). Ademas de los Estados Unidos, llevó a cabo trabajo de campo en Cataluña y México, a partir de una etnografía transnacional y militante. El artículo repasa la trayectoria de este antropólogo, desaparecido en junio de 2020, a partir del testimonio de personas que coincidieron con él, valorando su contribución al estudio de los movimientos sociales en red.

Sustainable development does not depend only on changing the attitude of companies and government programs and projects, but it is essential that society is also sensitized and mobilized. Information sustainability is not a recent discussion, but it has been intensified in recent years and has become a focal point for scientific discussion. With technological advances, especially in the informational sphere, it is necessary that institutions that deal with information are in tune with their users in different environments. In this context, the use of social media by libraries is essential to relate to their audiences, who are increasingly immersed in digital culture. Currently, Instagram has more than 500 million users worldwide, making it a great informational and virtual engagement tool for library users. In this perspective, the profile @sustentabilidadeinformacional is presented in this study as a model for libraries to be more engaged with global objectives, according to actions developed and promoted by associative movements and library associations.

Computational methods offer a new perspective on the evolving agendas of right-wing movements and parties online. This article showcases computational approaches to text analysis (specifically so-called topic models) to diachronically investigate nativist right-wing issues in social media by comparing comments posted on the Facebook page of the Pegida movement to those of the Alternative for Germany. After describing topic modelling as an increasingly popular method and drawing on the literature on right-wing nativism online, we investigate a set of shared issues relevant to the mobilization of commentators, including opposition to Islam, migration, the government and the media. We furthermore show contrastively how issue prevalence differs between the two groups, and how issue shares change over time, in some instances converging on a shared nativist core. We close with a series of suggestions on the utility of computation content analysis for the study of rapidly evolving political agendas.
