The 2011 Arab Spring protests seemed to mark a turning point in Middle East politics, away from authoritarianism and toward democracy. Within a few years, however, most observers saw the protests as a failure given the outbreak of civil wars and re-emergence of authoritarian strongmen in countries like Egypt. But in Delta Democracy, Catherine E. Herrold argues that we should not overlook the ongoing mobilization taking place in grassroots civil society. Drawing upon ethnographic research on Egypt's nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in the wake of the uprisings, Herrold uncovers the strategies that local NGOs used to build a more democratic and just society. Departing from US-based democracy advocates' attempts to reform national political institutions, local Egyptian organizations worked with communities to build a culture of democracy through public discussion, debate, and collective action. At present, these forms of participatory democracy are more attainable than establishing fair elections or parliaments, and they are helping Egyptians regain a sense of freedom that they have been denied as the long-time subjects of a dictator. Delta Democracy advances our understanding of how civil society organizations maneuver under state repression in order to combat authoritarianism. It also offers a concrete set of recommendations on how US policymakers can restructure foreign aid to better help local community organizations fighting to expand democracy.

This book discusses Brexit's implications for the two most important security institutions in Europe, the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). While Brexit is still unfolding, this book asks what it would mean for the future embedding of the UK into CFSP and NATO, as well as how it will most likely affect the inner mechanics of the transatlantic alliance (NATO) and CFSP in particular, in the years to come. Antibody Patenting' provides a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of all aspects relating to the patenting of antibodies from initial drafting and prosecution to enforcement. Antibodies have revolutionized medicine and biotechnology, and have become indispensable tools in therapy, diagnostics, analytics, and research. Therapeutic antibodies, for example, have come to dominate the ranks of blockbuster drugs, currently accounting for 10 out of the top 15 best-selling medicines. At the same time, a body of case law dealing specifically with the patentability of antibody-related inventions and the enforcement of antibody patents has emerged in major jurisdictions. The, at times, significant divergences between different jurisdictions have been compounded by recent decisions in the United States, most notably Amgen v. Sanofi, 872 F.3d 1367 (Fed. Cir. 2017), which have severely curtailed the possibilities to obtain broad antibody patents. Semi-structured interviews are a qualitative approach to collecting data. While they begin with a set of standardized questions which are asked of multiple respondents, this method could also be described as an organized conversation that is guided by new information obtained as the interactive discussion unfolds. This case study highlights a series of research studies that used semi-structured interviews to collect data from criminal justice practitioners working in corrections and courts. These semi-structured interviews provided rich and detailed information from multiple perspectives on what it is like to work in the specific areas of institutional and community corrections, including problem-solving courts. This research method is useful for understanding viewpoints of key stakeholders within an agency because it allows the respondent to participate in the process and discuss concerns related to the research questions that are of primary importance to people working in that particular environment. Although semi-structured interviews begin with a set of questions, researchers need to be attuned to the ongoing discussion and ask pertinent follow-up questions that elaborate on more general knowledge. By digging deep into topic areas generated by participants, semi-structured interviews can help researchers understand how and why something occurs, and provide data to support more rigorous testing of processes and expected outcomes related to the specific procedures of a program.

"Highlighting the geopolitical and economic circumstances that have prompted migration from Hong Kong and mainland China to Canada, The Transcultural Streams of Chinese Canadian Identities examines the Chinese Canadian community as a simultaneously transcultural, transnational, and domestic social and cultural formation. Michael Paul Rogin's scholarship profoundly altered the scope, content, and disposition of political theory. He reconstituted the field by opening it to an array of texts, performances, and methods previously considered beyond the purview of the discipline. His work addressed the relationship between dimensions of politics typically split apart - institutional power and cultural forms, material interests and symbolic meanings, class projects and identity politics, the public and the private. Rogin's scholarship enlarges our sense of the borders and genres defining political theory as a field and enriches our capacity to think critically and creatively about the political. The editors have focused on three categories of substantive innovation: Demonology and Countersubversion Rogin used the concepts "countersubversive tradition "and "political demonology "to theorize how constitutive exclusions and charged images of otherness generated imagined national community. "This edited volume of 13 original empirical chapters provides new insight into the uneven and stalled nature of the gender revolution in the United States in the 21st century. Organized in two parts, the book documents the influence of gender as a social institution as it intersects with other core social institutions and other key forms of inequality and highlights specific policy interventions needed to facilitate greater gender equality. An introductory chapter situates contemporary understanding of gender inequality into the broader theoretical landscape on gender and intersectionality.
