The mining industry has a huge environmental and social impact in the country/region where is located, consequently its contribution for sustainable development has been widely discussed. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) represents a challenge for this industry, namely, its inclusion as a common management practice integrated in the company´s management control system. For such, it´s imperative that there is a balance between the economic, environmental and social company's concerns. The aim of this article is to study that challenge in a Portuguese subsidiary belonging to a Japanese economic group. The data were collected through interviews and document analysis. The results suggest that CSR practices are not integrated in the management control system, are not part of a long-term environment strategy, and only reflect compliance with Portuguese legislation. It is expected, with this study, to contribute for the literature enrichment about CSR in multinationals companies operating in the extractive industry.

Economic and social performances are the two strong pillars of sustainable corporate growth. The companies in India are now showing a genuine interest in the upliftment of the stakeholders they serve. They have started giving Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) a place in their overall strategies of growth. This paper studies the extent of CSR disclosure made by leading companies constituting BSE SENSEX in India. The disclosure practices of 25 of these companies have been studied for the year 2009–2010 by preparing a CSR Index. Content Analysis has been used. Company-wise score and item-wise score has been calculated. The results show that the CSR disclosure by the leading companies in India is low. The company-wise mean disclosure is just 31 per cent while the category-wise mean disclosure is 40.32 per cent. The category of 'Others' followed by 'Environment' and then 'Community Involvement' are the most well-disclosed areas.

AbstractCorporate social responsibility (CSR) is not only increasingly valued by companies but also plays an extremely important role in the development of their strategies. This study systematically reviews literature that seeks to ascertain just which CSR strategies feature in the literature and their means of implementation by companies. We made recourse to the ISI Web of Science database for the search and collected 119 articles spanning a 25‐year period. The results enable the identification and categorization of CSR strategies into four key categories: (a) dimensions, (b) benefits, (c) value creation and stakeholders, and (d) motivations. We also identify that major companies around the world are ensured the implementation of their CSR strategies throughout their organizational structures with specialized resources. This systematic review provides a path for future research.

ABSTRACTThis study investigates the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and product evaluation and the role of brand familiarity in moderating the relationship between CSR and product evaluation. Using different levels of brand familiarity (high versus low) and CSR initiatives (high versus low), a between‐subjects experiment was carried out. The study finds that CSR has a positive impact on product evaluation and this positive impact is greater for products with high brand familiarity than products with low brand familiarity. The level of brand familiarity moderates the relationship between CSR and product evaluation. The study also reveals that the higher the CSR commitment and the brand familiarity, the more positive the product evaluation. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd and ERP Environment

Highly innovative companies, the pacemakers of economies and societies in the 21st century, have recently faced increasing public controversy and governmental scrutiny. In light of various scandals – ranging from alleged roles in election meddling, to data leaks and privacy issues, to the testing of autonomous vehicles and rogue experiments on human genome editing – citizens, policy-makers, and corporate leaders alike are calling for greater corporate responsibility in innovation practice. Yet, existing scholarship on corporate social responsibility (CSR) has paid little explicit attention to the ways in which innovations disrupt social orders and political systems. In this paper, we explore how CSR innovation can address the social and political consequences of innovation. We draw on theories from Science and Technology Studies (STS) and especially the notions of "politics of technology" and "responsible innovation" to identify shared conceptual interests in 6 domains: the boundaries of accountability, affected communities, responsiveness and inclusiveness, socio-cultural embeddedness, citizenship, and the concentration of power. We conclude with some tentative thoughts on implementation options of responsible innovation in corporate settings as part of CSR. Our work provides new opportunities for understanding companies as inclusive organization through the lens of innovation.

The UNGPs require governments to ensure that, when human rights abuses occur in the context of business activities within their territory, the victims of such abuses have access to effective remedies. This Perspective suggests how they may do so in an investment context by merging the "BAT" concept into BITs.
