In Poland there are 70 facilities recognised as monuments of history, 14 of which are listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. From the point of view of the effects in terms of national recognition for the historical monument, it has a prestigious meaning. Given the distinction of cultural monuments as a separately governed issue by article. 7 of the Polish Act on Antiques' Protection and Care, a question is raised debating the ratio legis of this institution. The possibility to apply for entry onto the UNESCO list is the only result of this legal regulation. However, what is the most problematic – the entry of such historic monument onto this exclusive List also does not constitute a change in terms of the legal status of such an object. The aim of this paper is to analyse the issue of the real and effective judicial protection of, both historic monuments as well as the facilities included in the list of World Heritage.

This essay reviews the twelfth iteration of the Sharjah Biennial, 2015, a major event in the international art calendar and the most significant fulcrum of cultural and artistic activities in the Middle East and North Africa. I examine how curator Eungie Joo articulated her theme of The Past, the Present, the Possible by looking closely at the exhibits and some of the key issues that framed the conversations during the March Meeting, the ancillary talk shop event that is as important as the various exhibitions. I explore selected works that either mirror the arc of art history from a Middle Eastern perspective or address some of the critical issues that are emblematic of our contemporary world. Finally, I consider how the biennial disrupts and/or affirms the typological structures and narratives that shape our understanding and experience of art biennials—what some scholars have described as the biennialization of contemporary art and of the art world.

André Carrington's "Speculative Blackness" is a novel approach to the consumption of race representation in media. Carrington explores how Blackness is manufactured, consumed, and transformed through the speculative fiction genre across multiple 20th and 21st century mediums. Traditional media of comic books and television shows reveal the marginalized status of Black figures however, these media do not exist in a vacuum. The consumption of speculative fiction is a transformative process for the original content, which consequentially produces amateur media due to a long-established history of fan interaction. Black representation is characterized as the exception, not the rule, in traditional production, but fan consumption reconfigures these notions. Ultimately, Carrington's work is an innovative dialogue regarding a genre that creates worlds speculating on what could be. Speculative fiction breaks down preexisting notions of our reality and creates worlds with entirely new expectations and interactions. With the creative liberty of the genre, Carrington casts Black representation as a consumed media but also an imaginative effort.

Geopolitics focuses on political power in relation to geographic space. Interactions among world countries have been widely studied at various scales, observing economic exchanges, world history or international politics among others. This work exhibits the potential of Wikipedia mining for such studies. Indeed, Wikipedia stores valuable fine-grained dependencies among countries by linking webpages together for diverse types of interactions (not only related to economical, political or historical facts). We mine herein the Wikipedia networks of several language editions using the recently proposed method of reduced Google matrix analysis. This approach allows to establish direct and hidden links between a subset of nodes that belong to a much larger directed network. Our study concentrates on 40 major countries chosen worldwide. Our aim is to offer a multicultural perspective on their interactions by comparing networks extracted from five different Wikipedia language editions, emphasizing English, Russian and Arabic ones. We demonstrate that this approach allows to recover meaningful direct and hidden links among the 40 countries of interest.

The VAST (valorisation of history and landscape) project (http://vast.fbk.eu/) was part of the initiatives promoted by the Autonomous Province of Trento (Italy) for the commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the First World War (WWI) outbreak. The project was primarily aimed to document and promote, through 3D digitization approaches and communication material, the memory of sites, theatre of the world conflict. The Italian Trento's province had been under the Austro-Hungarian Empire until the end of the WWI, during which represented a crucial and bloody war front between the Austrian and Italian territories. The region was constellated of military fortresses, trenches and tunnels, most of them now ruined and at risk to slowly disappear. 3D surveying and modelling techniques have been exploited to produce 3D digital models of structures and objects, along with virtual tours, communication material and a WebGIS of the area. All the products are available on the web for valorisation, educational and communication purposes.

Edward Schneier. 2016. Muslim Democracy: Politics, Religion and Society in Indonesia, Turkey and the Islamic World. New York: Routledge.This book is one of the most recent and pivotal works in studying of democratization in Muslim world. The controversial inference from the Edward Schneier's work is that the variable of religion, especially Islam in this context, is not appropriate enough to explain the success or failure of democracy in Muslim majority countries. By using the mix method of statistics comparison and comparative case studies in Indonesia and Turkey, he argues that the difference of colonialization, history, geopolitics and the growth of developmental economy is crucial variable to elucidate the different outcome of democratization in Muslim countries. However, this book is like a generalization from prior works regarding this topic especially in explaining Islam and democracy in both countries. This article tells, for the first time, the story of the history of the participatory map: that is, the many-to-many map-making techniques that most people are familiar with through smartphone apps and Google maps. Archival research in previously untapped archives traces the origins of participatory mapping in subaltern conversations around the world, its embrace in the modern academy and development circles, its place in the World Bank, and its conversion to online formats like Google Maps and Open Street Map. The story begins in surprising places, as international networks in the 1970s began experimenting with many-to-many mapping, their members spanning New Delhi to the Cree tribes of Canada. The article argues that indigenous and postcolonial politics generated techniques for the participatory management of land use that preceded the creation of the many-to-many map online. The article explores how early theories surpassed the radicality of many-to-many mapping as practiced today.

In 1966 when Botswana gained independence, it was one of the poorest countries in the world. But by 1986, Botswana had achieved middle-income status, and in 2005, the World Bank classified it as an upper-middle-income country. The only other country to enjoy such rapid economic growth over such a long period is China—an average of 9 percent between 1968 and 2010. Botswana has also maintained democracy throughout its recent history, and this combination of economic and political success has earned it the reputation of an "African success story" (Acemoglu, Johnson, and Robinson 2002). Botswana's rapid economic growth has nonetheless left many individuals behind. Unemployment is a major issue, particularly among the young. Income inequality is extremely high, as is poverty. The Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) between the European Union and the African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) nation-states are the most recent construct in a long history of developing countries' dependency and reliance on developed European countries. Even though Preferential Trade Agreements(PTAs) are widely used by countries party to the World Trade Organization (WTO), the European Union is hiding behind illusions of non-economic trade benefits, such as increased stability and health benefits, in their EPAs with ACP countries. The European Union has the economic bargaining power, creating an upper hand in the trade negotiations with the former colonial countries and other developing countries. The EPAs, like other PTAs, consistently have provisions that should be found to violate the most-favored nation (MFN) clause. Even though GATT Article XXIV allows for PTAs, in order for the WTO to achieve one of its initiatives to liberalize world trade, the MFN clause should penetrate throughout the EU-ACP agreements.

The author starts with the question of how in today?s supposedly
post-sovereign world, cultural patterns are being established and changed.
It is observed that the culture today has become a real battlefield and that
the process of inculcating cultural and value patterns takes the form of
psychological warfare. Therefore, the author specifically focuses on the
figure of the so-called agent of influence, exploring how this agent
influences the fields of culture and cultural policy. Particularly
interesting for investigation from the history of the twentieth century is
the cultural propaganda of the Comintern between the two world wars, and the
intelligence and propaganda activities of the CIA during the Cold War. After
these examples from an international arena, the author analyzes the
activities of foreign agents of influence in the cultural and educational
policy of Serbia. The author concludes that for effective defense and
counter-intelligence protection of a state from such attacks, it has to have
a clear awareness of the national interest as a starting point.

Objective: Compare the quality of life of older people with a history of Strokes residing in urban and rural areas. Method: A cross-sectional household survey was conducted with 56 elderly urban and 28 rural residents in Uberaba-MG. Data were collected through a structured instrument, World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) and World Organization Quality of Life Assessment for Older Adults (WHOQOL-OLD). The projects were approved by the Ethics in Research of UFTM, protocol No. 897 and 1477. Proceeded by a descriptive analysis and t-Student test (p <0.05). Results: The elderly in urban areas had lower quality of life scores in the physical domain and the facets past, present and future activities and social participation compared to the rural area. Conclusion: There is the need of the healthcare team to develop strategies to improve the functionality of the elderly in urban areas, as well as future expectations and expanding opportunity for social activities.
