(DÜI-Wsl)

Despite its achievements, Western social science often relies on concepts suited only to the West & lacks concepts relevant to the indigenous realities of Third World nations. The choice of terms from Western rather than Third World languages strengthens this tendency. Moreover, many social phenomena exist for which Third World languages have no terms -- largely responses to capitalist penetration. Examples from personal experience illustrate the need to coin terms appropriate to such realities, & to be prepared to universalize them. A new project, the INTERCOCTA encyclopedia, seeks to promote the development of new concepts in this manner. Some methods that might be useful in this effort are discussed. W. H. Stoddard

Examines the relationship of occupational integration of women and minorities to net migration rates for metropolitan areas. Shows that integration of minority individuals is negatively related to migration, but that integration of women is positively related. Explanations of these findings are drawn from human ecological theory. (Abstract amended)

An examination of the relationship of occupational integration of women & minorities in the US to net migration rates for metropolitan areas, based on 1970 census data for 320 SMSAs (as defined for the 1980 census). It is shown that the integration of minority individuals is negatively related to migration, but that the integration of women is positively related. Human ecological theory suggests interpretations of these findings. 2 Tables, 12 References. Modified HA

An examination of ethnic tensions in Nicaragua & of efforts of the Sandinista government to resolve them. Analysis of this problem as simply a conflict between Miskito people & the Nicaraguan state ignore the existing ethnic plurality of the country & the impact of intervention by the US. As a result of Nicaragua's having originally been included in two colonial systems -- those of Spain & of England -- the Atlantic Coast was never successfully integrated into the nation as a whole. The Sandinista government has sought to grant a higher level of autonomy to the Atlantic coast within the principles of the revolution; the US, however, has continued to oppose such a solution. W. H. Stoddard
