This book examines the figure of the sleeper agent as part of post-9/11 political, journalistic and fictional discourse. There is a tendency to discuss the terroristic threat after 9/11 as either a faraway enemy to be hunted down by military force or, on the other hand, as a ubiquitous, intangible threat that required constant alertness at home. The missing link between these two is the sleeper agent the foreign enemy hiding among US citizens. By analyzing popular television shows, several US comic books, and a broad variety of Hollywood films that depict sleeper agents direct or allegorically, this book explores how a shift in perspectivefrom terrorist to sleeper agentbrings new insights into our understanding of post-9/11 representations of terrorism. The books interdisciplinary focus between media studies, cultural studies, and American studies, suggests that it will find an audience in a variety of fields, including historical research, narratology, popular culture, as well as media and terrorism studies. Vanessa Ossa is Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Applied Science in Cologne, Germany. She is a former member of the Collaborative Research Center 923 Threatened OrderSocieties under Stress, Bin Tubingen and co-editor of, Threat Communication and the US Order after 9/11: Medial Reflections. Her research focuses on narrative representations of post-9/11 terrorism and transmedial narratology, with a particular interest in films, fictional television, comic books, video games, and related participatory practices.

"A transnational study of Asian performance shaped by the homoerotics of orientalism, Brown Boys and Rice Queens focuses on the relationship between the white man and the native boy. Eng-Beng Lim unpacks this as the central trope for understanding colonial and cultural encounters in 20th and 21st century Asia and its diaspora. Using the native boy as a critical guide, Lim formulates alternative readings of a traditional Balinese ritual, postcolonial Anglophone theatre in Singapore, and performance art in Asian America. Tracing the transnational formation of the native boy as racial fetish object across the last century, Lim follows this figure as he is passed from the hands of the colonial empire to the postcolonial nation-state to neoliberal globalization. Read through such figurations, the traffic in native boys among white men serves as an allegory of an infantilized and emasculated Asia, subordinate before colonial whiteness and modernity. Pushing further, Lim addresses the critical paradox of this entrenched relationship that resides even within queer theory itself by formulating critical interventions around "Asian performance." "The Public's Open to Us All": Essays on Women and Performance in Eighteenth-Century England considers the relationship between British women and various modes of performance in the long eighteenth century. From the moment Charles II was restored to the English throne in 1660, the question of women's status in the public world became the focus of cultural attention both on and off the stage. In addition to the appearance of the first actresses during this period female playwrights, novelists, poets, essayists, journalists, theatrical managers and entrepreneurs emerged as skillful and often demanding professionals. In this variety of new roles, eighteenth-century women redefined shifting notions of femininity by challenging traditional representations of female subjectivity and contributing to the shaping of eighteenth-century society's attitudes, tastes, and cultural imagination. Recent scholarship in eighteenth-century studies reflects a heightened interest in fame, the rise of celebrity culture, and new ways of understanding women's participation as both private individuals and public professionals. What is unique to the body of essays presented here is the authors' focus on performance as a means of thinking about the ways in which women occupied, negotiated, re-imagined, and challenged the world outside of the traditional domestic realm. The authors employ a range of historical, literary, and theoretical approaches to the connections among women and performance, and in doing so make significant contributions to the fields of eighteenth-century literary and cultural studies, theatre history, gender studies, and performance studies.

For most of the twentieth century, Brazil was widely regarded as a "racial democracy"-a country untainted by the scourge of racism and prejudice. In recent decades, however, this image has been severely critiqued, with a growing number of studies highlighting persistent and deep-seated patterns of racial discrimination and inequality. Yet, recent work on race and racism has rarely considered gender as part of its analysis. In Negras in Brazil, Kia Lilly Caldwell examines the life experiences of Afro-Brazilian women whose stories have until now been largely untold. This pathbreaking study analyzes the links between race and gender and broader processes of social, economic, and political exclusion. Drawing on ethnographic research with social movement organizations and thirty-five life history interviews, Caldwell explores the everyday struggles Afro-Brazilian women face in their efforts to achieve equal rights and full citizenship. She also shows how the black women's movement, which has emerged in recent decades, has sought to challenge racial and gender discrimination in Brazil. While proposing a broader view of citizenship that includes domains such as popular culture and the body, Negras in Brazil highlights the continuing relevance of identity politics for members of racially marginalized communities. Henry Sidgwick is one of the great intellectual figures of 19th century Britain. He was first and foremost a great moral philosopher, whose masterwork Methods of Ethics is still widely studied today. But he was many other things besides, writing on religion, economics, politics, education and literature. He was deeply involved in the founding of first college for women at the University of Cambridge. He was a leading figure in parapsychology. He was also much concerned with the sexual politics of his close friend John Addington Symonds, a pioneer of gay studies. Through his famous student, G.E. Moore, a direct line can be traced from Sidgwick and his cirlce to the Bloomsbury group. Bart Schultz has written a magisterial overview of this great Victorian sage--the first comprehensive study, offering quite new critical perspectives on the life and the work. Sidgwick's ethical work is revealed as a necessarily guarded statement of his deepest philosphical convictions and doubts. All other areas of his writings are covered and presented in the context of the late Victorian culture of imperialism. Ausgangspunkt der Arbeit sind die kulturanalytischen Untersuchungen des Birmingham Centre of Contemporary Cultural Studies (CCCS), die sich nach einem semiotisch-linguistischen und strukturalistischen Modell orientierten. Im Zentrum der Forschungen standen Jugendkulturen der Arbeiterklasse, die sich primär durch ihre soziale Identifikation und Herkunft konstituierten und als politisch orientierte Widerstandskulturen gegenüber der vorherrschenden Gesellschaft betrachtet wurden. Dick Hebdiges Stilanalysen standen im Mittelpunkt jugendlicher Subkulturforschungen des CCCS. Seiner Ansicht nach waren diese geprägt durch ein ?System von Zeichen?. Die Techno-Kultur in den 90er Jahren verweist auf einen Paradigmenwechsel. Das direkt Körperliche ist Ausgangspunkt für das Verständnis diverser Musik- und Modestile. Der Sound steht in der Generierung von Musik im Vordergrund. Ferner wird auch der unmittelbare Bezug zwischen Körper und Klang im körperhaften Musizieren beschrieben. Das, was gefällt, bestimmt heute die Wahl diverser Musik- und Modestile, wobei das Individuum und dessen Darstellung im Mittelpunkt stehen. ; The starting point of this work are the cultural-analytic investigations of the Birmingham Centre of Contemporary Cultural Studies (CCCS), orientated after a semiotic-linguistic and structural model. In the centre of the researches of the CCCS stood the youth cultures of the working class, which became established primarily by their social identification and origin and were looked within the scope of the CCCS as politically oriented opposition-cultures compared with the predominant society. Dick Hebdige's style analyses stood in the centre of youthful subculture researches of the CCCS. According to his view those were stamped by a ?system of signs?. The techno culture in the 90s, marks a paradigm change. The directly physical one is the starting point for the understanding of various music- and fashion styles. The sound is in the foreground in the generation of music, further the immediate relation is also described between body and sound in body-like making music. With reference to the fashion the body is moved in the centre, which is brought to the produced representation.Finally the today's hedonistically steered pop culture is discussed, which is described as "a value community", oriented to consumption and oriented to experience. A huge number of scenes, fashions and music styles exists by processes of pluralisation. The social identification with the scene is not important any more, rather own identity and their representation are in the foreground which become visible and learnable by the stimulative ?play with signs?. The need for authenticity and identity, but also standing out from the mass are basic needs of the today's pop culture. "Finding Women in the State is a provocative hidden history of socialist state feminists maneuvering behind the scenes at the core of the Chinese Communist Party. These women worked to advance gender and class equality in the early People's Republic and fought to transform sexist norms and practices, all while facing fierce opposition from a male-dominated CCP leadership from the Party Central to the local government. Wang Zheng extends this investigation to the cultural realm, showing how feminists within China's film industry were working to actively create new cinematic heroines, and how they continued a New Culture anti-patriarchy heritage in socialist film production. 'Ugly Differences' explores queer female sexuality's symbiotic relationship with ugliness and offers a way to see worth in ugliness as a generative category for reimagining the inhabitation of gender, sexual, and ethnic differences. Ugliness, in this work, is a multipronged concept: it equates with the disagreeable and pejorative traits that are attributed to queerness; it aligns itself with nonwhite, nonmale, and nonheterosexual physicality and experience; and it refers to anti-aesthetic textual practices, which are located in/as underground culture

Wie sind Schönheit, Gesundheit und die Konstitution des modernen Subjekts zum Gegenstand gesellschaftlicher Diskurse geworden? Ausgehend von dieser Frage zeichnen die Autorinnen und Autoren dieses Bandes die Geschichte des modernen Selbst im Spannungsfeld von Ethik und Ästhetik nach. Dabei wird das jüngst in den historischen Kulturwissenschaften aufkommende Interesse am Selbst in zweierlei Hinsicht korrigiert: Zum einen stellen die Studien die eminent bedeutsame Verbindung von Ethik und Ästhetik ins Zentrum und zum anderen können so - jenseits von idealtypischen Rekonstruktionen - erste Thesen zu Kontinuitäten und Brüchen in der Geschichte des Selbst aufgestellt werden. Pornoterrorism is a form of mixed-media performance art in the Americas that combines postpornographic and transfeminist practices with political commentary often directed at the intersection of sex and terror. Through interviews with artists in Mexico City and visual and performance analysis, this article explores the short but potent history of pornoterrorism in Mexico, unpacking the genre and specifically examining why underground artists, formerly known as pornoterrorists, decided to relinquish certain aesthetic choices when confronted with the increasing violence and precarity of visual culture and everyday life throughout Mexico. Thus, while focused on Mexico and more specifically Mexico City, this article poses and seeks to answer a larger question on queer and transfeminist aesthetics and world making, namely, whether dissident art forms can lose their ability to subvert in the contexts of their changing geopolitical milieus.

Queer and radical criticisms of the LGBT movement have existed since the movement's origins. Indeed, within any movement there are tensions between radicalism and liberalism, assimilation and separatism, and the role of professional or hierarchical organizations. Examining three recent publications on the LGBT movement, I argue that within the LGBT movement there is a tension between queer radicalism and professionalism (which is often conflated with homonormativity and assimilation.) As the national LGBT movement grew, it inevitably developed professional, formal organizations. Although a necessity in maintaining movement coherence and focus, professional organizations are also deeply problematic because of how they suppress dissent and radicalism. Professional organizations also incorporate corporate diversity culture, which is often staffed and led by white professionals and targets only visible and fundable identities such as race and gender.
