This volume offers a scholarly examination of educational history, highlighting the pivotal role of educational practices from the late medieval era to the early modern period. It provides a dynamic forum for emerging academics in the field, revealing fresh, multifaceted perspectives on the educational methods of this era. The work illuminates the sophisticated educational systems that shaped Renaissance Milan's merchants and the education of cantors in royal courts and cathedrals. Spanning from Brazil to India, it traces the extensive reach of Jesuit influence and reveals how their teachings fostered an early consciousness of a globally interconnected world in European education.

Volume I offers historiographical surveys and general overviews of central topics in the history of world sexualities. Split across twenty-two chapters, this volume places the history of sexuality in dialogue with anthropology, women's history, LGBTQ+ history, queer theory, and public history, as well as examining the impact Freud and Foucault have had on the history of sexuality. The volume continues by providing overviews on the sexual body, family and marriage, the intersections of sexuality with race and class, male and female homoerotic relations, trans and gender variant sexuality, the sale of sex, sexual violence, sexual science, sexuality and emotion, erotic art and literature, and the material culture of sexuality.

Volume II focuses on systems of thought and belief in the history of world sexualities, ranging from early humans to contemporary approaches. Comprising eighteen chapters, this volume opens with a chapter on the evolutionary legacy and then delves into the sexualities of ancient Egypt, the Near East, Greece, and Rome, continuing with pre-modern South Asia, China, and Japan, Africa, the Americas, and Oceania. Chapters include an examination of sexuality in the religious traditions of Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and also look at more recent approaches, including scientific sex, sexuality in socialism and Marxism, and the intersections between sexuality, feminism, and post-colonialism.

Nicht nur in den de-industrialisierten Städten des Westens wird zunehmend Wert auf kulturgeleitete urbane Regeneration gesetzt. Städtische "Kultur" – der Gegensatz zu "Natur" - war und ist seit der Antike bis zur Gegenwart ein Marker für Zivilisation und Zivilisiertheit (Bogner, 1989; Elias, 1981), und heutzutage zeigt sich gerade auch in der Stadtsoziologie die Herausstellung von Kultur bzw. das Zusammenspiel von Wirtschaft und Kultur in der nationalen wie auch internationalen Wettbewerbsfähigkeit von Städten. Ich wähle für diesen Beitrag einen stadtsoziologischen Zugang. Hierzu gilt es vorab zu klären, was überhaupt Stadt ausmacht. Anschließend wende ich mich dann dem konstruktivistischen Kulturansatz zu, um mit ihm Nation Building Prozesse anzuschauen, die sich oftmals, aber nicht ausschließlich in der Stadt manifestieren, in Europa weitgehend abgeschlossen sind, aber in postkolonialen und postsozialistischen Kontexten heute eine wichtige Rolle spielen. Deshalb betrachte ich am Beispiel Kasachstans einem jungen postsozialistischen Staat, der erst mit dem Zerfall der Sowjetunion zum Staat wurde und seit 1990 mit einem Nation Building Prozess beschäftigt ist. Er verlegte zu diesem Zweck die Hauptstadt, plante sie auf dem Reißbrett und baute sie in der Steppe. Besonders interessant wird dabei die Frage sein, wie (städtische) Kultur in Kasachstan verstanden wird.
