Through a reading of Neill Blomkamp's 2009 science fiction/mock documentary District 9 and John le Carre's novel The Constant Gardener, this article illustrates how the acceptance that we are all human has an identity-constituting function that enables bodies and lives to be valued differently with far-reaching implications for both biomedical experiments and experiments with the ethics of cohabitation. More specifically, this article examines biocolonial regimes, 'imagined immunities,' and limited sympathies that transform racialized, class-mediated, and transnational vulnerable bodies into experimental labor or biomaterial (hearts, kidneys, and corneas) to be consumed or disposed of as part of life-sustaining and life-administering apparatuses. This OFSP Investment Implementation Guide is targeted at those involved in the implementation of OFSP investment programmes such as local government or NGO field staff. The aim of the Unfolding Participation workshop is to outline an agenda for the next 10 years of participatory design (PD) and participatory human computer interaction (HCI) research. We will do that through a double strategy: 1) by critically interrogating the concept of participation (unfolding the concept itself), while at the same time, 2) reflecting on the way that participation unfolds across different participatory configurations. We invite researchers and practitioners from PD and HCI and fields in which information technology mediated participation is embedded (e.g. in political studies, urban planning, participatory arts, business, science and technology studies) to bring a plurality of perspectives and expertise related to participation.

Der Beitrag zeigt am Beispiel türkischer Unternehmen, mit welchen Strategien die Nischen verlassen werden können. Von großer Bedeutung sind das spezifische Humankapital, professionelle Netzwerke und strategische Planung. Daneben spielen betriebliche Investitionen und die Produktqualität eine Rolle. Ethnic Entrepreneurs are of growing economic significance in Germany. However, in terms of their business development they often operate in ethnic niches. Using the example of Turkish entrepreneurs we show, how to leave those niches. In an empirical study we find that human resources, strategic networks and planning play a crucial role in breaking out of the niches. This article implements an experimental test of a game-theoretic model of equilibrium profiling. Attackers choose a demographic "type" from which to recruit, and defenders choose which demographic types to search. Some types are more reliable than others in the sense of having a higher probability of carrying out a successful attack if they get past the security checkpoint. In a Nash equilibrium, defenders tend to profile by searching the more reliable attacker types more frequently, whereas the attackers tend to send less reliable types. Data from laboratory experiments with financially motivated human subjects are consistent with the qualitative patterns predicted by theory. However, we also find several interesting behavioral deviations from the theory.

My first advice to graduate students is always that they should follow their own motivation. That is, in my view, the key to success for the students and the main driver for scientific progress: only motivated researchers will make a difference, in academia and in society. But of course environment and development economics is a good choice: it is very relevant and intellectually challenging. Alleviating poverty and preserving a balance between the human sphere and the natural environment are the major issues of our world. The parts of the world that are still developing are also the parts of the world where important choices will be made on preserving this balance. This makes the field very relevant.

This study explores the economic status of female marriage immigrants in South Korea. Multilevel analyses were performed to examine the effects of individual characteristics and social context on their employment and poverty status. The results revealed that human capital, social capital and family conditions are significantly associated with employment and poverty status. Assimilation-related factors also had an indirect effect on poverty by impacting employment. Social context factors exhibited unique and significant effects on economic status; in particular, rurality and unemployment rates were negatively associated with employment. Finally, regardless of employment status, female marriage immigrants in rural areas were at greater risk of falling into poverty than their urban counterparts.

Does pay satisfaction improve when employees are informed about company pay policies, programs, salary ranges, and average pay increase amounts? Conventional wisdom in human resource management would say that they do and that providing this information is a "no-brainer." Surprisingly, research on the topic of pay secrecy indicates a mixed picture on the benefits of "open pay" initiatives and shows that the majority of organizations have not taken the first steps to inform employees on pay matters. HR practitioners considering whether to provide more pay information to employees will benefit from learning about what is settled knowledge concerning the value of releasing pay information to employees.

Faith-based institutions and organizations represent a longstanding yet underutilized resource for health promotion and disease prevention efforts. The White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, and its affiliated office within the Department of Health and Human Services, are the highest-profile markers of federal efforts, but most faith-health partnerships are not federally funded and date back many decades. Formal partnerships between the faith-based and public health sectors encompass activities in the fields of health behavior and health education, health policy and management, epidemiology and biostatistics, and environmental health. These partnerships are instrumental for achieving both domestic and global health promotion priorities.

The ongoing civil war in Syria is evolving into a 'proxy war', in which both the Baathist regime and its insurgent adversaries are becoming increasingly reliant upon support from external powers. Proxy warfare has a superficial appeal for sponsoring states, as it appears to offer a convenient and risk-free means of fulfilling foreign policy goals, which will not incur the financial and human costs of direct military intervention. Using Syria as a case study, this article shows that the conduct of proxy warfare has several potential political, strategic, and ethical consequences, which any democratic government in particular is obliged to consider before it resorts to this indirect means of foreign intervention.

Addressing climate change demands a fundamental change in United States energy policy and a major infrastructure for a renewable energy future. Yet the boom in natural gas development and expanding demand for energy in developing nations argue poorly for reductions in fossil fuel use. This Article documents how the federal government has resorted to some measure of environmental exceptionalism by rationing environmental law to expedite renewable energy development in the context of the seismic shifts in U.S. energy policy. Despite the many arguments in opposition to rationing environmental law, this Article concludes that the realities of climate change and the lack of progress despite other minor administrative efforts support rationing as a measured response necessary to human survival.
