In mid-twentieth century France, the term "social space" (l'espace social) -- the idea that spatial form and social life are inextricably linked -- emerged in a variety of social science disciplines. Taken up by the French New Left, it also came to inform the practice of urban planning. In The View from Above, Jeanne Haffner traces the evolution of the science of social space from the interwar period to the 1970s, illuminating in particular the role of aerial photography in this new way of conceptualizing socio-spatial relations. As early as the 1930s, the view from above served for Marcel Griaule and other anthropologists as a means of connecting the social and the spatial. Just a few decades later, the Marxist urban sociologist Henri Lefebvre called the perspective enabled by aerial photography -- a technique closely associated with the French colonial state and military -- "the space of state control." Lefebvre and others nevertheless used the notion of social space to recast the problem of massive modernist housing projects (grands ensembles) to encompass the modern suburb (banlieue) itself -- a critique that has contemporary resonance in light of the banlieue riots of 2005 and 2007. Haffner shows how such "views" permitted new ways of conceptualizing the old problem of housing to emerge. She also points to broader issues, including the influence of the colonies on the metropole, the application of sociological expertise to the study of the built environment, and the development of a spatially oriented critique of capitalism.

AbstractPartisan criminological analysis is characterized by dogmatic theories whose volidity is politically rather thon scientifically determined. Methods of inquiry ore used to demonstrate rather thon test theoretical propositions. Standard methodological tactics include assertion, anecdote, association, and analogy. In contrast, nonpartisan conflict analysis treats as entirely problematic the processes by which conceptions of deviance are socially constructed and become the official concerns of those who wield state power. What, how, why, and by whom behavioral or nonbehovioral attributes are labeled deviant is viewed as o function of the relative power of parties in conflict over the distribution of life chances.

This paper discusses the partucular scopes of history, philosophy, sociology,
geography, anthropology, and psychology in the interpretation of certain
artistic phenomena. At the same time, there are possibilities for connecting
their results into a consistent, paraconsistent comprehensive
multidisciplinary interpretation, and especially the reality of that
interpretation in relation to theoretically recognizable elements of art and
composition of artistic work. Social sciences provide the history of art with
necessary material to expand the interpretation of art and analysis of works
of art, as well as the theoretical foundation of multidisciplinarity.

Biological explanations shaped criminology at its inception, and today they are reemerging with fresh vigor and increased potential. But many criminologists do not understand how biological theories developed, what they contributed to criminology generally and where they went astray. This paper focuses on the work of Earnest A. Hooton, whose criminological studies, published in 1939, met with decidedly mixed reviews but were nonetheless discussed for decades in criminological textbooks. Information about a now half‐forgotten and misunderstood figure like Hooton, in addition to being useful in and of itself, contributes to the history of criminology as a discipline—a project essential to the field's ultimate maturity. It helps build a history of criminological knowledge.

This article explores research that, by definition or in practice, is conducted by the social science community at the international level. International research contrasts with most social science research, which is conducted within state boundaries by scholars who work on projects individually or in small groups. A survey of key research quality gatekeepers reveals a diverse range of international research activities in the UK, across all the disciplines, as well as extensive collaborative links with scholars around the world. Evidence of the characteristics present in research that transcends national & local limitations is presented, & revealing judgments about the comparative quality of international research in the social sciences emerge. This evidence also puts into perspective the common view that the US is the world leader in social science research.
