AbstractIf Latin America's public universities are considered part of the state, then it seems plausible to characterise them as similar to the state, i.e. as clientelistic. However, this plausible hypothesis has never been examined by the literature on twentieth-century Mexican social sciences. Just like clientelism, science patrons such as US philanthropic foundations have similarly been neglected. In this article I argue that, as an alternative to what the Rockefeller Foundation perceived as clientelism and amateurism at Latin American universities, it claimed to patronise liberal scholarship, practised according to formal rational criteria. While foundations have been frequently considered part of a US imperialistic drive towards cultural hegemony in Latin America, they were not unitary actors and frequently failed to predict the actual impact of their grants. In Mexico in the 1940s, the Rockefeller Foundation boosted the humanities, but missed the opportunity to support a local take on social science teaching and research.

Taking 'the idea of the tragic' as a point of departure, this article articulates an approach to sociology and social theory from the perspective of a 'tragic vision'. In arguing for the relevance of 'tragic thought' for the analysis of contemporary crises, it suggests that 'the tragic' must be understood as a reflection of the long tail of the formation of a particular secular, modern 'ethico-onto-epistemology'. In making this case, the article provides an 'interpretive genealogy' of tragic ethics in social thought, detailing the thought of Lucien Goldmann and Georg Lukács, and putting it in dialogue with contemporary posthumanist theory. It concludes by drawing on recent debates in the latter involving the place of 'critique' in contemporary social science, teasing out some implications for thinking about individual action and responsibility.

The extent to which social scientific research has influenced the control & operation of the military since the beginning of WWII is examined. Previous attempts to assess such impacts are evaluated, & case studies of military research on the following subjects are analyzed from a SofK perspective: psychiatric personnel screening; morale; racial composition; solidarity & cohesion; & macroanalysis of the military profession. It is cautiously concluded that while the role & significance of social research on the military has been limited, the consequences have generally been positive. The need for more research of this type is asserted & a framework suggested. Modified AA.

In this comprehensive exploration of the core issues surrounding offender reentry, Elaine Gunnison and Jacqueline Helfgott highlight the constant tension between policies meant to ensure smooth reintegration and the social forces—especially the stigma of a criminal record—that can prevent it from happening. Gunnison and Helfgott focus on the factors that enhance reentry success as they address challenges related to race, class, and gender. Drawing on accounts from corrections professionals and former inmates to illustrate the real-life consequences of reentry policy, they shed light on one of the key criminal justice issues of our time
Ronald Aday and Jennifer Krabill offer a complete picture of the experience of older women prisoners and the distinct challenges these women present for correctional institutions. The authors integrate their quantitative findings with the voices of individual inmates to explore essential concerns such as health, inmate and family relationships, prison adjustment, and end-of-life issues. They also consider the enduring impact of intimate partner violence. While painting a vivid portrait of struggles to build lives behind bars, the authors share critical insights into the social forces that shape women's contact with all stages of the criminal justice system
The COVID-19 pandemic, Brexit and the US-China trade dispute have heightened interest in the geopolitics and security of modern ports. Ports are where contemporary societal dilemmas converge: the (de)regulation of international flows; the (in)visible impact of globalization; the perennial tension between trade and security; and the thin line between legitimate, illicit and illegal. Applying a multidisciplinary lens to the political economy of port security, this book presents a unique outlook on the social, economic and political factors that shape organized crime and governance. Advancing the research agenda, this text bridges the divide between global and local, and theory and practice
