Arctic environmental changes already impact regional ecosystems, economies and northern communities, and are having increasing influence on many aspects of the global system. Interest in the Arctic has increased in concert with our improved awareness of potential changes; however, research funding has not necessarily kept pace with the need to improve our understanding of Arctic system change to inform evidence-based decision making. Analyses of data on research funding trends (2003–14) in Canada, the USA and the EU indicate that less than 3% of the total budget the funding agencies considered is allocated in any given year to Arctic-related research. Furthermore, alignment is uneven among established scientific research priorities, existing societal needs and projects awarded funding. New support mechanisms and improved alignment among resources, expertise and priorities, including Indigenous research priorities, are vital to planning and adaptation in the face of ongoing Arctic change.

The question of whether the Tablighi Jamaat is simply a global proselytizing Muslim movement or a potential Islamic terrorist threat is addressed. An overview of the Tablighi Jamaat's origins, development, & ideology is presented, emphasizing the dearth of information known about the group's organizational structure & its spread into European & North American countries during the late 1970s. The Western political & scholarly delineation of the Tablighi Jamaat as an international missionary movement is strongly rejected; indeed, evidence of group members' participation in terrorist activities & the group's participation in recruiting extremist Muslims for Islamic terrorist organizations is offered to counter this misperception. The negative influence of the Tablighi Jamaat upon the African American Muslim movement & the number of similarities between the Tablighi Jamaat & the Islamic Circle of North America are subsequently discussed. It is concluded that Tablighi Jamaat should be perceived as a group that advocates political subversion rather than religious freedom & suggested that Western nations' disregard of its international recruiting activities will produce dire consequences. Player mobility in North American sports leagues is limited by labor market constraints designed ostensibly to allow teams to recoup player development costs & to maintain competitive balance within leagues. Theory holds that the distribution of talent will be invariant under any institutional configuration, & while rules to constrain movement will serve to enhance monopsonistic exploitation of talent, they will have no effect on competitive balance. This paper reprises a general theory through which the effects of the labor market constraints can be comparatively analyzed for American sports leagues. The economics of sports has been relegated to the realm of labor theory by the unnecessarily limiting assumption that owners of sports clubs are single-minded profit maximizers. This paper also presents a theory that seeks to unify capital market decisions of financial leverage & ownership syndication with operational labor market decisions for athletic talent & an owner's desire to win. 2 Figures, 43 References. Analyzes the impact of globalization on urban economies & policies in the context of fading borders & foreign direct investment. The evolution of multinational corporations is linked to changing international economic conditions, with finance playing a critical role. Globalization is argued to increase the importance of place & force cities to reorganize themselves as links in a global product chain. Only those few cities that embrace technology & become flexible centers of authority are seen as truly global; examples of successful cities are cited. Consequences to local development & infrastructure are assessed, with "edge cities" an important component. Decentralization of back-office functions (eg, record keeping & analytical tasks) is seen as significant. It is concluded that changes in urban labor markets, infrastructure, & demographics brought on by the global economy will continue to alter urban social structures, culture, politics, & socioeconomic character. 1 Table. This article examines the impacts of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) upon the economies of Canada, the US, and Mexico, particularly regarding economic integration among the three nations. More specifically, the discussion is centered on the emergence of interactions among the three countries; how they have changed routines and the whole economic organization of production; and how these new patterns of trade, investment, and labor migration could affect the future of the region. Economic predictions for the impacts of NAFTA are discussed, and are then compared to the effects. It is concluded that the optimistic expectations that NAFTA would have created a virtuous circle of increased production and employment have not been fulfilled; that, considering the tremendous increase in mobility over the past decade, economists must consider how factor mobility affects growth; that the burden of adjustment has fallen on labor markets; and that governments must be aware of the need for strategic planning. Directions for further inquiry are suggested.

The collection is made up of five different accessions; L2001-05, which is contained in boxes one through 104, L2002-09 in boxes 106 through 120, L2006-16 in boxes 105 and 120, L2001-01 in boxes 120-121, and L2012-20 in boxes 122-125. The campaign materials consist of items from the 1940 and 1948 political campaigns in which Ross participated. These items include campaign cards, posters, speech transcripts, news clippings, rally materials, letters to voters, and fliers. Organizing and arbitration materials covers labor organizing events from "Operation Dixie" in Georgia, the furniture workers in North Carolina, and the Mine-Mill workers in the Western United States. Organizing materials include fliers, correspondence, news articles, radio transcripts, and some related photos. Arbitration files consist of agreements, decisions, and agreement booklets. The social and political research files cover a wide time period (1930's to the late 1970's/early 1980's). The topics include mainly the Ku Klux Klan, racism, Communism, Red Scare, red baiting, United States history, and literature. These files consist mostly of news and journal articles. Ross interacted with coal miners while doing work for the United Mine Workers Association (UMWA) and while working at the Fairmont Clinic in West Virginia. Tying in to all of the activities Ross participated in during his life were his research and manuscript files. He wrote numerous newspaper and journal articles on history and labor. From 1939 to 1940, Ross worked for the United Mine Workers Non-Partisan League in North Carolina, working under John L. Lewis. He was hired as a union organizer by the United Mine Workers of America, and sent to Saltville, Virginia and Rockwood, Tennessee.
