Forests are an essential component of the lorraine landscape and environment and a valuable part of the heritage of the province. Therefore, they play an important part in country planning schemes and are still considered in many cases as a stake to be taken into account. An analysis of wooded areas is a reliable testimony of the success or failure of the successive planning policies applied and the various harmful actions it had to suffer (inconsistencies of the re-structuring schemes, preference given to resinous species, damages due to wars, annexion : 1871-1918. The area covered by forests has risen by 100 000 ha since 1945 and this development has been paired with an increase of the proportion of tall fully-grown trees in decicuous forests. The timber industry has become a very promising branch for the economy of lorraine, though results are rather fluctuating. Its future is closely linked to the development of research in sylviculture and the existence of an innovative and efficient forest management sector. Though it exposed to many threats (acid rain, various forms of pollution, encroaching urbanisation, extension of fallow land) the forest contributes greatly to the quality of lorraine landscapes and should make the re-structuring process of the local economy easier (timber industry line, tourism and leisure activities) ; La forêt est une composante essentielle du paysage lorrain. ; This study analyzes the coverage of the two main Spanish newspapers about the Basque conflict after its armed phase, focusing on the construction of mental models when dealing with the question about the prisoners of political conflict. It explores the arguments that legitimize the imprisonment after the armed organization ETA announced the end of its attacks on October 2011. This study found that the media display an ideological square, polarizing the interests of prisoners and the Basque independentist left on one side (the outgroup), and the interests of the Spanish state and the Spanish society on the other (the ingroup), intensified by the negative presentation of the other and positive self-presentation. Prisoners are usually presented as victimizers and guilty; therefore, mental models that oppose their freedom are easily activated. The conflict itself is perceived as a confrontational situation where ETA is the aim to eliminate; and peace, as a scenario which inevitably means the victory (military and discursive) of the ingroup over the outgroup. Finally, the observations of the analysis are compared with the principles of Peace Journalism, concluding that the Spanish media do not promote mental models that evoke empathy and reconciliation between the different actors involved in the conflict.

This dissertation aims to study the relationship between the economic dimension of "new wars" and the perpetuation of violence. The analysis on the economic dimension of "new wars" shows that it is an essential aspect to understand in an interconnected and globalized setting because there are impacts on the state-building and on the social and political spheres. The main question of the thesis is going to analyze the main aspects of the war economy in Kosovo. One of the hypotheses holds that in contemporary wars, the state suffers increased levels of violence, which leads to a non-ending cycle of internal crisis, because of the economic aspect of war. The goal is to explore this hypothesis and to analyze the nature and characteristics of the war economy as well as, to understand how the perpetuation of violence can easily spread on a transnational level. One of the main sources for the discussion of the "new wars" theory are the book New & Old Wars: Organized Violence in a Global Era, 2012 by Mary Kaldor and the book The New Wars, 2003 by Herfried Münkler. Kaldor has an extensive fieldwork experience on the type of intrastate conflicts and analyses the main aspects of conflicts in different parts of the world. While Kaldor and Münkler focus on the "new wars" thesis, authors such as Philippe Le Billon in the paper The Political Economy of War: What Relief Agencies Need to Know, 2000 provides a better insight into the different types of war, their characteristics and challenges. Finally, authors such as Francesco Stratazzi in the article with the tittle Between ethnic collision and mafia collusion, 2006 and Jenny H. Peterson, in the article with the title Transforming a war economy, 2014 provide an even more detailed analysis of the economic aspects of the conflict in the Balkan region and in relation to the case on Kosovo's war economy. The dissertation is divided into three chapters. The first chapter examines the nature of the "new wars" based on a qualitative research of the central authors on the topic. The second chapter analyses the political economy of weak states and the causes for the perpetuation of violence. In the third chapter, the case study on the Kosovo war economy is discussed and analyzed to better understand the theoretical aspects of the economy of the war in the case of Kosovo. The main goal of our thesis is to study the related causes of the economic dimension of these types of war and to understand how the awareness of war economy can help to take measures to prevent violent conflict and perpetuation of war.

The need to incorporate the gender dimension in higher education is a central element of gender equality policies within the European Union (EU). When most institutions of higher education have already strengthened and consolidated their curricula, the next challenge is to include and ensure that all people have the same opportunities to progress in education. This study intends to incorporate the gender dimension in teaching through a guide providing recommendations for the introduction of changes that will allow its effective incorporation in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) areas. It will take into account the administration in charge of formulating policies in the field of education, the students, and, mainly, the teaching staff. Its objective is to cover aspects related to the principles of equal opportunities and gender equality in STEM higher education disciplines. For this purpose, 41 volunteer teachers from 8 degrees and master's degrees from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Spain participated. To achieve the results of this study, aspects related to social and gender relevance of the subjects, inclusive methodology, classroom management and assessment were considered. As a preliminary step to the development of the guide of recommendations, a teacher's self-assessment tool and a questionnaire for students to analyze the perception of the gender dimension were developed. ; Peer Reviewed ; Objectius de Desenvolupament Sostenible::4 - Educació de Qualitat ; Objectius de Desenvolupament Sostenible::5 - Igualtat de Gènere ; Postprint (published version)
