From refugees fleeing wars or natural disasters to economic migrants pursuing better paid jobs abroad, international migration is an inescapable part of the modern world. Migration Between Nations: A Global Introduction provides a succinct and accessible overview of the varied types of migrants who cross national boundaries. Drawing upon a wide-ranging selection of case studies and the latest research findings, migration patterns and recent trends throughout the world are surveyed and summarized, with particular attention to movement from the global south to the global north. In a highly inter-disciplinary analysis, the social, cultural and economic integration of migrants and of their offspring in their new homelands are also explored. Employing approaches from a number of disciplines, the methods and techniques that researchers use to study various aspects of migration and integration are also explained. The Thesis starts with the analysis of the life cycle of human beings process, with an emphasis on maturity age stage, bio psychosocial changes they faced with, characteristics, appropriate conditions of this phase and the challenge of accepting and integrate it as our own. It explores the theoretical elements, terms and social concepts about older age adults or seniors, bearing in mind the concept on themselves and what it means to age in a healthy way, also the different development theories for this population group in the areas: biological, psychological and social. This allowed us to sensitize the real attitude that we must show to these people, knowing that everyone, without exception, will go through this vital process. According with the public policy there some aspects that help us to integrate and structure it, in the same way it will responds to the political regime and Government project, in this case to the paradigm of the Proper Living Way. Besides we analyze both subjects the level of citizen participation and the seniors as active subject of their rights. Another aspect to consider is the demographic, this aspect is in direct impact in the Senior Population, two situations has influence in this aspect: the extension of life expectancy and the strong increase of number in this population group. In addition, we conducted a review of the national legal framework and international agreements that are responsible for the proper attention to be given to this group that need a priority attention. Finally, with the support of the Public Policy applied in our country for Seniors, in both fields national and local, and we are making special emphasize in The Senior Experience Center (CEAM-Center), we complete our investigation of the topic using two true life stories from Seniors that are part of the daily services in this Center ; La presente tesis es una investigación que inicia con el análisis del proceso del ciclo vital de los seres humanos, con énfasis en la etapa de la adultez mayor, los cambios biopsicosociales que tienen que afrontar, características y condiciones propias de esta fase y el desafío de aceptarla e integrarla.

The rule of law is a valuable human achievement. It is valuable not only instrumentally, but also for its own sake as a significant aspect of social justice. Only in a society that enjoys the rule of law is it possible for people to regard one another as fellow free citizens; no one the master of anyone else. Nevertheless, the rule of law is poorly understood. In this book, Frank Lovett develops a rigorous conception of the rule of law that is grounded in legal positivism, and offers a civic republican argument for its value in terms of freedom from domination. Bridging persistent methodological gaps that divide legal philosophy, social science, and political theory, Lovett demonstrates how insights from all three can be united in a single powerful theory. This book will appeal to anyone interested in the rule of law, including scholars, legal officials, and policy makers.
The new research method presented in this book ensures that all economic theories are falsifiable and that irrefutable theories are scientifically sound. Figueroa combines the logically consistent aspects of Popperian and process epistemologies in his alpha-beta method to address the widespread problem of too-general empirical research methods used in economics. He argues that scientific rules can be applied to economics to make sense of society, but that they must address the complexity of reality as well as the simplicity of the abstract on which hard sciences can rely. Furthermore, because the alpha-beta method combines approaches to address the difficulties of scientifically analyzing complex society, it also extends to other social sciences that have historically relied on empirical methods. This groundbreaking Pivot is ideal for students and researchers dedicated to promoting the progress of scientific research in all social sciences

Negotiating the boundaries of the secular and of the religious is a core aspect of modern experience. In mid-nineteenth-century Germany, secularism emerged to oppose church establishment, conservative orthodoxy, and national division between Catholics, Protestants, and Jews. Yet, as historian Todd H. Weir argues in this provocative book, early secularism was not the opposite of religion. It developed in the rationalist dissent of Free Religion and, even as secularism took more atheistic forms in Freethought and Monism, it was subject to the forces of the confessional system it sought to dismantle. Similar to its religious competitors, it elaborated a clear worldview, sustained social milieus, and was integrated into the political system. Secularism was, in many ways, Germany's fourth confession. While challenging assumptions about the causes and course of the Kulturkampf and modern antisemitism, this study casts new light on the history of popular science, radical politics, and social reform
Especially under the aspect of globalization, the mutual influence of space and gender moves increasingly into the view of cultural studies and the social sciences. This volume brings together interdisciplinary contributions that analyze the constructed character of space and gender terms, which is constitutive of social, cultural, and political worlds on the one hand and imaginary, fictional worlds on the other hand. The epoch-spanning and interdisciplinary studies provide a contribution both to contemporary debates on the spatial turn as well as to current positions in gender studies. This book combines the two most important typologies of capitalist diversity. This is possible because all countries with liberal market economies also have liberal welfare states; all countries that coordinate their economy either have a conservative or a social democratic welfare state. Building on this, this book shows how Hall and Soskice's 'Varieties of Capitalism' typology can be combined with Esping-Andersen's welfare regime typology. Drawing on a large dataset of empirical indicators, this book argues that similar historical cultural policy styles forged production systems and welfare arrangements that now follow similar logics within families of countries. It is possible to distinguish 'liberal', 'social democratically coordinated' and 'conservatively coordinated capitalism', because production systems and welfare states form a coherent whole, so that neither of the two aspects can be studied in isolation. Ultimately, this book shows how such a unified typology can explain trajectories of liberalization.
This volume explores the roots of Europe's struggle with multilingualism. It argues that, over the centuries, the pursuit of linguistic homogeneity has become a central aspect of the mindset of Europeans. In its extreme form, it became manifest in the principle of 'one language, one state, one people'. Consequently, multilingualism came to be viewed as an undesirable aberration. The authors of this volume approach the relationship between standard languages and multilingualism from a historical, cross-European perspective. They provide a comprehensive overview of the emergence of a standard language ideology and its intricate relationship with matters of ethnicity, territorial unity and social mobility. They explain for different European language areas in what ways the emergence of standard languages had an impact on multilingual policies and practices. Its comparative approach makes this volume an important resource for linguists, researchers from different philologies and social historians.

"Ethnicity and nationalism are pervasive features of the contemporary world. How far is ethnicity a result of cultural differences, and how much is it in fact dependent on the practical use of, and belief in, such differences? Thomas Hylland Eriksen demonstrates that far from being an immutable property of groups, ethnicity is a dynamic and shifting aspect of social relationships. Drawing on a wide range of classic and recent studies, Eriksen examines the relationship between ethnicity, class, gender and nationhood in a lucid and comprehensive manner." "A core text for all students of social anthropology and related subjects, this third edition of Ethnicity and Nationalism is indispensable to anyone seriously interested in understanding ethnic phenomena. New topics covered include cultural property rights, the role of genetics in the public understanding of identification, the commercialisation of identity, and the significance of the internet."--Jacket

Global Warming takes one of the hot-button issues of our time and surveys it in historical context, creating an intellectual portrait of the multi-century shifts in thinking that have led to gradual acceptance of the concept. The book summarizes pertinent aspects of geology, earth science, and climate science in easy-to-read terms. It then frames this background in terms of cultural and social shifts, including the Industrial Revolution, conspicuous consumption, and modern environmentalism. In addition, a study of the ebb and flow of cultural and political reception relates the issue to religious and social ideas. The information presented here will enable the reader to understand the scientific case stating that human activity has caused an unprecedented warming in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Technical and political objections to this thesis are also covered, so that readers may form their own opinions on this critical subject.
