Comics Beyond the Page in Latin America is a cutting-edge study of the expanding worlds of Latin American comics. Despite lack of funding and institutional support, not since the mid-twentieth century have comics in the region been so dynamic, so diverse and so engaged with pressing social and cultural issues. Comics are being used as essential tools in debates about, for example, digital cultures, gender identities and political disenfranchisement.
Rather than analysing the current boom in comics by focusing just on the printed text, however, this book looks at diverse manifestations of comics 'beyond the page'. Contributors explore digital comics and social media networks; comics as graffiti and stencil art in public spaces; comics as a tool for teaching architecture or processing social trauma; and the consumption and publishing of comics as forms of shaping national, social and political identities. Bringing together authors from across Latin America and beyond, and covering examples from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay, the book sets out a panoramic vision of Latin American comics, whether in terms of scholarly contribution, geographical diversity or interdisciplinary methodologies.
The chronicle of human migration is as old as human civilization which goes back to prehistoric time when it started flourishing in ancient Africa. The main cause behind such migrations is to have a greater opportunity for life which enfolds economic, political, social and demographic factors. But, in the course of time, the immigration has gradually become a challenging issue since it has deep-rooted connection with culture and identity. The entire process involves alienation, loss, anxiety, insecurity in the minds of the immigrants as well as the indigenous people. The present study will showcase the effect of globalization and modernization on the nations and their subjects keeping in mind the burning issue of immigration across the globe. In order to have a better understanding of one's individuation process, the present paper will address sociological, psychological, and multicultural issues against the backdrop of xenophobia as depicted by Monica Ali in her third novel In the Kitchen. But the main focus of the present study is to demonstrate how it affects and helps in rebuilding the identity of those belonging originally to the homeland.
Lithuania has been a target of Russia's soft power efforts for the past two decades. The aim of this article is to analyse Russia's soft power influence possibilities in Lithuania. First, it analyzes how soft power is interpreted in Russia compared to the Western conception. Then, Russia's soft power instruments and their core goals are reviewed, not all of which fall under the category of "soft power instruments" according to the Western understanding. The article proceeds with demographic changes in Lithuania and trends of consumption of Russian culture and information in Lithuania. The main argument is that Russia is not aiming to apply soft power to the general Lithuanian society but to particular groups within the population (Russophone minorities and residents with sentiments for the Soviet Union). It can be assumed that demographic trends and Russia's aggressive actions will increasingly limit its soft power capabilities. However, the greatest setback to Russia's soft power in Lithuania is arguably caused by its continuing reliance on hard power when it comes to countries of the post-Soviet space.

This article examines some of the factors that made it difficult for democratic life to thrive in the first Cuban Republic. Using the concept of "civic culture", it examines the development of the discourse of citizenship, the approach to political representation and alternation and the initiatives of the first legislation. The result was a contradictory regime which linked the birth of the State with the constitution of a nominally democratic system, unable to create the basic conditions required to sustain the people's trust and the representativeness of the men holding public office. ; El presente artículo examina algunos de los factores que dificultaron el correcto funcionamiento de la vida democrática en la primera república cubana. India is a fascinating country that has always attracted many western filmmakers. There are a thousand ways to understand India, to project oneself there, and to get into its skin. The country is a maelstrom of human, social, and spiritual contradictions, where it is humanly not possible to disentangle its skein. In order to give a glimpse of this complex reality and its dynamism, the view of filmmakers on the lifestyle and the diversity of this country has been proposed. It is a dream of the West: Many western filmmakers, including those from France, have had a desire to express themselves, often with talent. In this analysis of the films of five French directors, different aspects which constantly overlap in filmmaking have been explored. The aim of this research paper is to bring forth their insight into life and culture of India and to analyse their interpretation (of Indian society). An analysis of how filmmakers have accounted for the profound changes in Indian society through their perception of politics, religion, identity, urbanism, crafts or households has been done.

"During the Mao years, laughter in China was serious business. Simultaneously an outlet for frustrations and grievances, a vehicle for socialist education, and an object of official study, laughter brought together the political, the personal, the aesthetic, the ethical, the affective, the physical, the aural, and the visual. The ten essays in Maoist Laughter convincingly demonstrate that the connection between laughter and political culture was far more complex than conventional conceptions of communist indoctrination can explain. Their sophisticated readings of a variety of genres--including dance, cartoon, children's literature, comedy, regional oral performance, film, and fiction--uncover many nuanced innovations and experiments with laughter during what has been too often misinterpreted as an unrelentingly bleak period. In Mao's China, laughter helped to regulate both political and popular culture and often served as an indicator of shifting values, alliances, and political campaigns. In exploring this phenomenon, Maoist Laughter is a significant correction to conventional depictions of socialist China"--Back cover
