The purpose of this thesis is to describe how some forms of fictional and non-fictional texts can be configured as and within the framework of humanitarian practices. In exploring the definitions and features of humanitarianism and humanitarian literature, the thesis attempts to answer the question of what purpose these texts try to serve. In examining the works Marie in the Shadow of the Lion (2000) by Jerry Piasecki, The Ultimate Safari (1989) by Nadine Gordimer, Gomorra (2006) by Roberto Saviano and Letters from Burma (1996) by Aung San Suu Kyi, we will argue that the scope of these books can be located by analogy to social and political humanitarian practices. Beyond their differences in genre, style and subject matter, these texts share a common feature: they are performative, namely they strive to do things with words. The humanitarian texts discussed in this thesis can be shown to act in the world in order to implement the values proclaimed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Parole chiave: ; The research analyzes the Italian explorations in Southeast Asia carried out in the second half of the nineteenth century, in particular from 1865 to 1885, in a global perspective. Post-unification Italy set up some naval expeditions in the Asian area, with the intent of forging diplomatic and commercial agreements with the states of the Indochinese peninsula (Burmese Empire, Siam); at the same time, some scientific explorations were conducted privately by Italian naturalists such as Odoardo Beccari and Leonardo Fea, who contributed to spread the knowledge of the internal regions of Burma and of the islands of the Indomalese archipelago in the country. The region was also the object of some colonial projects, with the aim of obtaining a territorial concession to establish a penal establishment or a commercial station; these attempts were supported in particular by the merchant Emilio Cerruti and the adventurer Celso Cesare Moreno, who proposed to the Italian government the purchase of some islands in the Molucca archipelago and in Sumatra. The Italian government, in 1870, tried to establish a colonial settlement in Borneo, starting diplomatic negotiations with the British Foreign Office, but the political pressures of the British and Dutch governments, which were affirming their dominion on the island, forced the executive chaired by Giovanni Lanza to definitively renounce the project. The Italian expansionist attempts in Southeast Asia, however, witnessed the spread of a colonial consciousness in some of the country's entrepreneurial and nationalist circles, gathered in scientific associations such as the "Società Geografica Italiana" (Italian Geographical Society), founded in 1867; the interest shown towards these projects by some ministries, in particular from the navy dicastery, also proved a direct involvement of some governments of the "Destra Storica", in particular the executive presided by Luigi Federico Menabrea, backdating the beginnings of the Italian colonial expansion - conventionally attested to 1882, the year of the acquisition of the Bay of Assab, in Eritrea - to the years of national unification. The research examined the broad internal political debate aroused by colonial projects in the Indomalese archipelago, as they helped define the methods of acquisition of the overseas territories, which were subsequently used by Italy in the African colonies. Lastly, the Italian explorations in Southeast Asia were analyzed in a global perspective, with the aim of placing them within the scientific expeditions set up by the European powers in the Asian region, while examining the social and political situation of the local populations in the years of the extension of western colonial rule; the interactions between the natives and the Italian explorers were also studied, whose writings contributed to spread the knowledge of the area in Italian culture in the last decades of the nineteenth century.
