Catholic Church and State in Cuba: past and present relationships ; Iglesia católica y estado en la República de Cuba: pasado y presente de sus relaciones
After centuries of a deep presence in Cuba, the Catholic Church has always been part of a complex relationship with the political establishment. The break between Church and State that occurred after the Revolution, would soon show the institution's ability to survive in unfavorable conditions. Now, after more than fifty years of revolutionary experience, the Catholic Church has become the sole internal interlocutor with the regime. The aim of this article is to analyze the process by which the Cuban Catholic Church has managed its relations with the Castro regime, balancing its pastoral mission with its social responsibilities, that has been increasing as new factors emerged, on both the national stage and on the International Relations front.

Christian Thomasius, the rule of law, and the separation of Church and State ; Christian Thomasius, el Estado de derecho y la separación entre Iglesia y Estado
Christian Thomasius was above all a professor of jurisprudence who used his legal skills to resolve all sorts of legal, political, and moral problems. In this article we review two of his writings that contributed to his rearticulation of the relations between religion and politics in early modernity. He used the elements of what later became the concept of the rule of law to defend Denis Veiras, author of the Histoire des Sevarambes, against charges of atheism. He also defended the skeptical jurisprudence of Georg Heber as the best instrument for separating church and state and assigning each their proper roles, and made use of theological skepticism to justify excluding the theologians from politics and limit the interventions of princes into religious matters except in cases where the peace of the state was endangered.

El enfoque weberiano de la relación y la separación entre la Iglesia y el Estado ; The Weberian Approach to the Relationship and Separation Between Church and State
; In the context of the recent struggle for the right to abortion in Argentina, the slogan of "separation of Church and State" emerged strongly within a sector of the women's movement. This elementary liberal demand, formulated in the twenty-first century, stimulates reflection on the scope of secularization in modern societies and on the relations between the political and religious spheres. As a result, this article recovers the theoretical legacy of Max Weber, who not only made the universal process of rationalization his privileged research problem, but also carefully approached the categories of State and Church and the link that these institutions stablished historically. In that sense, the paper aims to: 1) examine the way in which Weber constructs his definitions of these two sociological concepts, specifying their affinities; 2) identify the most important typicalideal relationships that ...

Church, State, and Society during the Nicaraguan Revolution
The course of the Church's history in Nicaragua had changedfrom an institution led by a martyred Bishop protecting Indianrights before Rome and the Spanish King to one largelyconcerned with protecting its own interests followingNicaragua's independence to one that had come to terms with itsmission to save souls and to serve its people. However, many ofthose who took the initiative to bring the Church toward a morehumanitarian orientation in modern times had allowedthemselves to become the tool of a revolutionary politicalmovement whose aim was to perpetuate its own power.Ironically, those who truly wished to serve God and His peoplefound themselves oppressed by those who claimed that theywere doing the same. After a long struggle, a free election in1990 brought to power a series of democratic governmentsallowing freedom of the Church to fulfil its mission.

The 1931 Spanish constitutional debate on freedom of conscience: a discussion about the relations between Church and State
Abstract: This study examines the Spanish parliamentary debate of 1931, in the framework of the debate on the new Constitution, about freedom of conscience through the relations between Church and State outlined by the different political parties.
