In 1959, the most important revolt in its history shook Tibet. The Dalai Lama fled the Chinese communist regime, taking with him many Tibetans who formed Tibet in Exile. France had to take a position on its relations with the representatives of the Tibetan political opposition, even though it had not yet recognized the People's Republic of China. This study focuses on the evolution of France's role in these trilateral relations, from the events that contributed to them to the present day. We report on the impact that the international situation, domestic contexts and the policies of each of the parties involved had on France's policy towards Tibet, drawing in particular on French archives and historical works relating to relations between these three countries.

International audience ; For many policy makers in France, internationalization of higher education is a new subject. "Internationalization: it's time to invest", concludes a recent report presented in January 2015 by the French government. "It's a new challenge for France", said the organizers of the Congress of the French Grandes Ecoles already in 2010. People have short memories. They have forgotten – or simply do not know – that French universities were pioneers and leaders in internationalization between the end of the 19th and the middle of the 20th century, before being outshone by the United States and some other European countries. How can this be explained?
